Nutter has a press release out today, on the eve of the 4th anniversary of the Iraq war, that says any troop "surge" should happen here:
“I’m calling for a surge in federal resources where they are wanted, needed, and could actually do some good – on the streets of Philadelphia," the release reads in part.
I am not sure we want the Army patrolling Sansom, but the point remains:
Why did we have to cut 300 Housing Authority Jobs - why?
Federal budget cuts. And why?
I think you know.

Seriously. The federal government has been screwing cities since the Republicans took office. They cut funding of important domestic programs so they can send our kids to die overseas. I'm glad the Democrats got a lot of power back in the midterms, but I can't wait until we elect a democratic president again.

I'm sorry but you totally wrong in reporting:
"Why did we have to cut 300 Housing Authority Jobs - why?
Federal budget cuts. And why?
I think you know."
No one in the federal gov't cut 300 PHA jobs...NO ONE! Carl Greene the head of the LOCAL housing authority did just that. Most of the boarded properties in this city belong to...guess who. PHA. Try, just try to contact PHA about buying and rehabbing the thousands of abandoned buildings they own. PHA is the largest landlord in PA. Instead of selling they sit on many historic structures open for decay. Instead of doing the right thing and selling most of its site scattered buildings. Carl Greene fires 300 people and blames the Bush. I'm a long time democrat and voted against Bush twice so don't get any ideas. I see truth beyond partisan lines.

I have to be honest i find it funny that everyone wants to blame the republicans in DC but what about the problem with Philadelphia and its political structure. Philadelphia has been a one party system for years and where has it gotten us except for corrupt and greedy politicans, a unsellable PGW and PWD that cost millions to operate and by the way cost the consumer millions more than what other areas might be providing identical services, to many city employees with benefits, pension plan, etc. that just cost to much and in support of the previous email you can't get a hold of anyone, esp. PHA. It's a joke this city and our govement services, I would almost prefer privatization of trash pick up, we all know you have more on the street after they live then what was on the street before they came down, if we could sell of PGW and PWD and allow some company make money with groups.
I can go on and on but there is no time.
What we need in this city is a two party system. You can't have one pary controlling what is going on. We also need to start supporting Republicans esp. in Harrisburg because the current city administration has alienanted it self from the rest of state. We need to tell eveyone that we support whom ever supports the city and its citzens.
PHA is a joke and I can't understand why they just don's sell off more houses to those that want and need housing. I just ask that we stay away from developers, etc.
Just a start. This city is dying a slow death and I'm not sure if any of the candidates are up to the challenge. I need someone that can tell the unions that hey we need to make a change.

Agreed. While I would love to see the city get more support from D.C., I think that there's plenty of room for improvement within the city's budget that could free up significant amounts of money for more useful purposes.
As far as the city's political structure, having two parties holding each other accountable would be helpful. However, just as importantly, I would love to see the entire ward system scrapped. The system is antiquated and currently serves mostly as a means for doling out patronage and political favors. It's really sad that most anyone who wants to do anything in Philadelphia must run the gauntlet of ward politics before they can accomplish anything (this also encourages career politicians, as opposed to people who spontaneously decide to run for office becuase they see problems, have ideas, and think they can quickly make a difference).
