Michael Nutter has sent us a very strongly worded statement taking issue with Mayor Street's recent comments on crime. Street's comments seemed to refer to some of the points in Nutter's new "Safety Now" crime plan.
Some of the quotes from Nutter's statement (and the caps are his):
"This Mayor appears to be completely out of touch with the reality of gun violence on the streets of Strawberry Mansion, Point Breeze, and Kingsessing. I am here today to say that there ARE things a Mayor can do TODAY to make all Philadelphians safer. We are NOT trapped in violent conditions completely beyond our control."
Nutter disagreed with Street's opposition to targeted declarations of "crime emergencies," a key part of Nutter's "Safety Now" crime plan, saying:
"In the Mayor’s world, the public relations of the City would be worse with a declared emergency than it is with 406 homicides last year and 26 in the first 18 days of this year. To me, the City’s reputation is foundering on the inaction of this Administration in the face of violence. ... In the Mayor’s world, a more aggressive policing strategy is something to be feared. To me, the police are not the problem here but part of the solution. This is not the police department of the 60’s."
He also defends his support of additional surveillance cameras, saying that "when the University of Pennsylvania has 84 surveillance cameras and the entire City of Philadelphia has only 18, something’s wrong."
And he takes on the odd point that Street made yesterday that the war in Iraq was adding to a general lawnessless in the culture and in Philadelphia. "It’s hard to imagine Mayor LaGuardia blaming World War II for murders in New York during the 1940s," Nutter said.
Your thoughts?

I'm still trying to figure out that Iraq comment. Maybe it was an attempt to distract people through an appeal to the anti-Bush/anti-Iraq war sentiment. If so, it was pretty lame.

Wow, finally. I love how Michael Nutter has some cajones. When I read the Street comments, I wondered to myself if I was crazy. How could an elected official get away with such comments about gun violence? I agree alittle with Street when it comes to the reasons regarding the reasons of why these situations become murders, but we can't just lay down. Seems like the mayor is saying "oh, you know... boys will be boys." You tolerate this stuff, and all the investment will fly out of this city.
Also, funny how Chaka can't seem to put philly on his priority list when it comes to debates and forums.

Fattah also just cancelled his appearance at tomorrow's Philly for Change forum (so did Evans). You can still hear/meet Michael Nutter and Tom Knox (the only still confirmed candidates) if you attend.

In no way is this an endorsement for Mayor Street's Iraq/Philly comparison, but I have read that throughout American history violence has in fact spiked during times of war. I will see if I can find an article to site.

Streets excuses continue to be lame. He is basically saying the murders are no big deal because the shooters and victims know each other. That is true in many cases, but it doesnt matter. What kind of mayor uses these excuses in public? Does he feel his answers are going to fly with the families of innocent victims caught in the crossfire? He is a joke.

Nutter is right. How can we keep saying that crime is beyond our control and expect anyone to choose to live here?

This article kind of touches on the war/violence thing...

An audience member at last week's forum in Mt. Airy asked a similar questions of the candidates about the link between the Iraq war and the murder rate. When she started talking about the Iraq war I just kind of rolled my eyes and thought that this was just going to be another lame question about how the mayor could express opposition to the war but in the end it turned out to be a pretty insightful question. The answers were equally insightful.
Evans used it pivot to the need for more candidates and officials on the federal level whose priorities would be to redirect funding to the inner cities in the way we are currently spending so many of the nation's resources on Iraq.
Nutter said that he would have voted in favor of last fall's resolution to put a question on the ballot to allow the city to express its opinion about the war. He cautioned, however, that his disagrees with amending the Home Rule Charter to use it as a public opinion poll, which technically is what happens every time a ballot question is passed. He also made the connection between the war and the situation in Philly, not by saying that the war is causing the current murder epidemic but by saying that 3000+ deaths of U.S. servicemen reported daily, has numbed us as a city to the death toll in Philadelphia and "is sending us to a different place as far as how we treat each other." I intrepret that to mean that the lack of outrage among those not affected by the murder rate, ie those in powerful places who could pressure politicians to do things, is in part caused by a desensitivity brought on by the daily exposure to death in Iraq. I welcome anyone else who attended to give a clearer interpretation.
Knox used the question to point out that in both cases we focus on those who are killed (ie the Inky's running murder total and the KIA number in Iraq) and we lose site of the horrible situation for those who are wounded in Iraq and those who are shot but survive in Philly. We look at the big murder number and forget that there were also 2000 shootings.
The Green Party candidate proposed that we limit the sale of ammunition and require that it can only be sold at gun ranges and other places where people would be trained in firearm use and safety. I guess he's thinking that the state could sell ammo in facilities like it sells liquor in the state stores.
However, none of them went the way that Mayor Street did.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

I am willing to write about any topic and it will be at least 600 words. The post will be 100% unique as I will have a member of my team write it for me. All i would like in return is one link at the bottom of the post (like a resource box when you submit to an article site) If you are interested please use the email I have provided in this comment, as you can see it's my main business email :). I really look forward to your reply thanks a lot for taking the time to read this comment I know how long it can sometimes take to go through all the spam comments that people leave these days. Thanks again, Lee

Article submission is an extremely powerful process and too be honest I am not sure wether i agree with doing it automatically. My current SEO stratergys for article marketing are fairly simple. I outsouce an article to be written by a professional english writer, the article must contain at least 1,200 words and be of extremely high quality. Next i will submit it to the top 20 article websites based on Page Rank and traffic. After submitting the articles i will then do some basic backlinking and bookmarking to make sure they get indexed by the search engine spiders. I find that doing article marketing this way works extremely effective however i suppose that having the software submit less quality articles to the less dominant websites and then submit to the ones manually that you can't use a tool for with your quality article because at the end of the day quality backlinks never hurt anyone.

I am always sating hotels and the difference in quality and customer service still amazes me. I have done a lot of travelling through business and pleasure and the difference to me between a nice stay and a great stay is welcoming staff. There is nothing worse than checking into a hotel to find that the staff can't even really be bothered to servce you and show you too your room. I have also stayed at hotels where items of my personal belongings have gone missing after the maids have gone through the place.
