Former City Controller Jonathan A. Saidel Joins Law Firm of Cohen, Placitella and Roth

PHILADELPHIA: Former City Controller Jonathan A. Saidel has joined the law firm of Cohen, Placitella and Roth, P.C. as a Member and chair of the newly formed government relations practice. Mr. Saidel will also focus on class action and shareholder litigation on behalf of pension, health and welfare funds and governmental entities as well as environmental litigation. His office will be located in the firm’s Center City offices.

“We are enormously happy that Jonathan has decided to bring his vast experience and expertise to our firm,” said Stewart Cohen, founding partner of Cohen, Placitella and Roth. “His detailed knowledge of government, developed over his decades working for the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will allow us to provide an unparalleled level of service and insight to our clients.”

Mr. Saidel served as Philadelphia’s City Controller for sixteen years before stepping down in 2005. As Controller, he won local and national plaudits for reforming and professionalizing the Controller’s office, his dedication to fiscal discipline and proposing innovative ideas to grow Philadelphia. His work with then-Mayor Rendell in the early 1990s helped return Philadelphia from the brink of bankruptcy and onto sure footing. Mr. Saidel’s 1999 book “Philadelphia: A New Urban Direction” continues to be used as a textbook in college level urban studies courses and was updated in 2005.

“For over 25 years, I have been committed to ensuring that promises made are promises that are kept and that the interests of taxpayers and workers are protected,” said Mr. Saidel today. “I am excited about working with the talented professionals at Cohen, Placitella and Roth and I look forward to continuing to build on the work I did as Controller.”

Mr. Saidel is a graduate of Temple University and the Delaware Law School of Widener College and is both an attorney and certified public accountant. In addition to his new role at Cohen, Placitella and Roth, Mr. Saidel is a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels Center of Government and teaches Government Finance as an Adjunct Professor in the MBA Program at Drexel University. He is the proud parent of four children, Hope, Nick, and twins Joshua and Jacqueline.

Cohen, Placitella and Roth has over 35 years of experience handling complex litigation, including securities litigation, environmental litigation, class actions on behalf of pension, health and welfare funds, and catastrophic personal injury cases. The firm has offices in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Bala Cynwyd) and New Jersey (Red Bank, New Brunswick and Princeton).
