Dan P. just got out of tonight's candidate forum, presented by the Next Great City project -- the first time the five Democratic candidates for mayor have gathered on the same stage at one time during this campaign.
The forum was a smashing success, with a packed house at the Academy of Natural Sciences and several remote locations.
And we know how the five will act when put together: Well, they get a little testy.
Case in point: Tom Knox mentioned that he thought Chaka Fattah, Bob Brady and Dwight Evans should stay in their current jobs to better serve the city. Which would leave "a race between Michael and me."
So Michael Nutter asked Knox if Knox would lend him a little money, "but at a lower rate, please" -- an apparent reference to Knox's brief history of payday lending.
And those two weren't the only ones...there were moments of squabble through the night. Dan said it was a little like a 15-round fight, "or several 15-round fights happening at once" -- and that some of the participants looked a little tired by the end.
On the substance of the forum -- the event was to talk about the Next Great City's environmental agenda, after all -- Fattah didn't back off on his idea of a congestion tax, despite recent criticism. And when asked what three items on the 10-point agenda they supported most, they replied:
Nutter: Expanded recycling, zoning code reform, improve transit stops
Knox: Recycling and a better-planned riverfront (he didn't get to a third one)
Brady: Recycling, a better-planned riverfront and zoning code reform
Fattah: Said he'd do all 10, but when pressed by moderator Flavia Colgan he said tree planting was his top priority
Evans: Tree planting (and he mentioned his experience with this in West Oak Lane) recycling and zoning code reform.
And a couple of Brady moments to note: He gave 5 minutes of his time to Queena Bass, who promoted her campaign to bring the Love back to Philadelphia. Brady also got a couple of good laugh lines in, including when he thought he was either on the Septa board or the TWU board because he had sat through so many negotiations.
And the race rolls on...

I think Bob Brady won this debate! Michael Nutter did alright too, and Knox and Evans blew it. Chaka was weak and had no message.

The Nutter campaign already has some video up from the forum:

The public transit clip also includes the exchanged between Nutter and Knox that Wendy quoted:

BRADY won the debate? "I would implement all ten of them recommendations?"
Nutter took the day and was the only one who sounded like he knew what the Forum was about. Don't know how much good it will do him, though, considering he's already got the white environmentalist vote and they were the entire audience. And trash-talking SEPTA drivers probably wasn't the smartest move, even though its pretty true.
By the way, why did Evans seem so angry? He should probably tone that down.

I wasnt even there but I would assume that Nutter is likely to get most of votes from that crowd anyway. I think that type of subject is his strong suit. I think the other guys are more one issue guys. Knox is about pay to play, Brady is about bringing people together, Evans is about crime and Fattah is about.........well I dont know what his signature issue is right now. I think Nutter is well rounded and is knowledgeable about many topics. Dont know if that is going to be enough to win though.

Nutter was a shining star at this forum. He was the most prepared and the others didn't demonstrate that they understand what the issues really are. Nutter expanded on each of the questions and has a real idea what sustainability is and why it is important for our region, environmentally, economically, and socially. Also, I was appalled that Fatah and Evans showed up 50 minutes late!

From what I understand from my remote location moderator, this event was put together somewhat quickly and with all of their responsibilities (ex. Nutter and Knox who are focusing solely on their campaigns) may not have had a big chunk of time to prepare for the event. I think all of the candidates had good things to say and for the most part recognized that they each have had experience and contributions to our city. I don't know about other remote areas, but there were only 8 people at mine that were there to learn about or support a candidate. These are all smart, experienced men who have had much success and their goal over the next 12 weeks will be to convince us which one of them is ready to lead this city. This should be the considered the equivalent of an NFL preseason game. You see moments of skill and talent but its just there to work the kinks out. Wait until everyone starts running TV ads and there are more formal debates held.

Nutter was great - but that's expected because he's a policy wonk, what was unexpected was how charming and down to earth Bob Brady is.

The sustainable Philadelphia folks have been priming the Mayoral candidates on the policy items suggested by Next Great City agenda since last summer. They had advised also advised the candidates 4-6 months in advance that the mayoral forum would be held in February, following the release public release of the report in January. So each and every candidate has had several months to prepare.
As someone who has been working on sustainability issues for several years, it was clear to me that although the other candidates seemed to get that it was imporant to have a nice environment, Michael Nutter was the only candidte who understood sustainability and had a plan.
For those who dont know, sustainability means using best practices today to preserve and improve quality of life for the current and future generations. The sustainability movement also rests upon the concept that economic, social and environmental factors are inseperable in relation to one another.
There is alot of money to be made by becoming a greener city, not to mention how much more enjoyable life in this city would be if the NGC aganda gets implemented. A candidate who makes this a priority says, "I believe that Philadelphia is a first rate city."
Every other mayor in the country gets this stuff folks, and if we elect another one who doesn't we are essentially saying to the world, "we don't want to be a first rate city."

I was fortunate enough to have had a seat at the Academy forum last night. I am amazed that there is even a debate about who the true winner was.
Michael Nutter was in fact the only one who clearly answered the questions that were asked with actionable plans and clear and gramatically correct sentences. Does a college degree really matter to lead the next great city?
Why doesn't The Next Mayor.com add a survey question to ask those who heard last night's debate who they thought the winner was?

Just want to add that Michael Nutter went above and beyond the candides by coming up with his own sustainability plan, beyone what the Next Great City is proposing.
It is easy for the other candidtes to say they support the ten iniatives. But how are they going to implement them. We need a mayor who knows how to get things done. Not just talk about them.
Also like to add that if Fattah is sooo progressive, as may like to claim, and not just a career politician, why did he have so little knowledge on this issue??? With a pol like Brady, who doesn't pretend to be foward thinking, it is understandable that he had to rely on his charm to get through a event about such a current issue, but what is Fattah's excuse? Or Knox's for that matter? (Evans, who seems to be the only other candidtes with a brain besides Nutter, also seemed to get the issue, but alas, has no plan...)

I had other obligations yesterday and all I've seen of the forum are the videos the Nutter campaign put up on the internet (any other candidates posting vids?), but I think Brady has made it pretty clear, based on the video on the main page of his website and many other speeches, that he really has no interest in "wonking the policy."
It's all well and good to say you'll "bring people together" but you also need to have some sort of grasp of the issues in order to guide the results of those meetings. I'm sure Brady's a charming guy, but why would anyone want to "hire" somebody for a job they themselves admit they don't really know much about?

when will the video be posted? and can you please post the video as the main story and drop Milt...thought this site was about "issues not egos"

OK, video update: I've got the video and am working on getting it posted -- but it's a huge file and it will take a while.

I was at the forum. Michael Nutter did well, but Bob Brady was not only charming, but actually had the greatest grasp on the policy and issues outside of Nutter.
Posted by Andy Daven | February 17, 2007 1:07 AM
I think that Andy Daven has the best grasp on policy issues outside of Nutter. Bob Brady has the best grasp on democratic committee peoples' hands.
