While not quite as incendiary as the "race card" or dumb as the "flip flopper card," the "Fumo card" can be just as damaging in this mayoral race. We find in today's Metro that at least one reporter actually made it to the candidate forum last night at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, and for his efforts he was rewarded with this primo quote:
“He’s been supported by Vince Fumo for years and that’s why he’s in power,” Knox said of Kenney last night at a mayoral forum at Rodeph Shalom Synagogue attended by all of the candidates except Brady. “Vince Fumo wants to see Bob Brady elected mayor so he can continue his grip on our economy."
Gee, and Knox seemed like such a nice guy from those $2 million dollar commercials. While we've heard third party commentators mention the Brady-Fumo connection and several of the stories about Kenney's bill also made that connection, this seems to be the first time that a candidate has come out and laid the that four-letter "F" word at the foot of one of his opponents. Methinks Congressman Brady has some choice "F" words for Mr. Knox.
The gloves, gentlemen, are off.

Knox is wrong. Fumo may be why Kenney got in originally, but not why he's stayed. Kenney has provided us with smart, progressive, passionate leadership. I believe that he was the top vote-getter in the last Council elections.

I'm not sure what to think of Councilman Kenney's motivationg for introducing this bill. If you read some of his comments on other blogs, it almost sounds like he just doesn't like Tom Knox, which is a very bad reason to introduce legislation.
Regardless, I think this bill is also the wrong approach from a policy standpoint since it reduces transparency in our political campaigns. For instance, can anyone answer this: if the unions wanted to spend a lot of money (over the contribution limit) on a campaign to get Brady elected, would they be able to do so as long as they did so on their own (as opposed to doing so by funding Brady's campaign) and were clear about the origin of the advertising?

Kenney's motivation is clear, and he said it! He's trying to close an untintended loop-hole in the ordinance that allows a self funded candidate to give himself 3000% of the limit on individual donors.
This obviously has to be corrected, and it's unfair to let one man buy the election.
Maybe he cant, but $2 Million bought him over 20 percentage points.
