    Michael on Milton

Nutter's statement on Milton Street includes the following:

Philadelphia is a city full of fun and opportunity, a city of neighborhoods with people who appreciate a good joke. Milton Street is not a good joke, he is a bad joke ...
This campaign needs to be about the issues and not a sideshow with someone who does not even live in the state of Pennsylvania....
This campaign is not about one person getting themselves on television, it is about who is best qualified to reform the city and move Philadelphia forward. ...
It is absolutely incredible that a person who does not live in the city and who is currently fighting corruption charges would even think to present himself as a mayoral candidate. ...

    And my favorite:

It sends the wrong message about Philadelphia. If Milton wants to run for mayor he should declare his candidacy in New Jersey, where he sometimes gets tired and lays his head down to sleep.

I do have to say, though Dan is right -- Milton is the third rail -- I certainly think if anyone is entitled to go after him it's Nutter. Milton called Bob Brady, Dwight Evans and a third candidate -- who has got to be Knox -- "wimpetized" on Fox the other morning, but saved a special kind of racial epithet for Nutter.

Wendy, you alluded to comments M. Street made on FOX but with citing them. If you have the text, could you please share or link it? I must have missed it when it aired, and if Milton is hurling "racial epithets," as you say, at Nutter I'd sure like to be aware of them.

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I know there was an article that said Milton referred to Nutter using a "racial epithet" but didn't go into any detail (I suppose it may have been referring to the "Watermelon Man" comment). Can't find the article anymore, though.

    Robert:

great - now Milt wants to sue the police for arresting him ... please MAKE IT STOP!

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Yeah, I was about to post and point out that it could well be that Nutter's using the inane but extremely popular Milton Street story to get himself some media exposure. This should put a dent in the 45% of people who say they haven't heard of him.

    Phaedrus:

Thanks Wendy. I heard the Watermelon man thing on fox tonight, in fact, and wondered if that was it. that, of course, was bad enough, but good to know something else (and possibly worse) hadn't slipped by.

while we're on the subject tho, what is nutter's campaign doing engaging this guy? is it me, or did they fall so far behind during their two-month stupor that now, desperate for coverage, they are allowing themselves to be drawn into an electoral sideshow--one that will let other candidates discuss issues while they are locked in a helpless back-and-forth with this joke?

    dr sabu:

I say let Milton run... it wouldn't Philly if we didn't have this for comic relief.
Nutter's just afriad Milton will take away 12 of his 25 votes. Hell, we let Ross Perot run for President.
