Fattah still leads in Tribune poll

[ETA: We've posted the full press release here.]

Chaka Fattah is still the leading mayoral candidate among the city’s African-American voters, but Tom Knox has gained significant ground over the last six months, according to a survey sponsored by the Philadelphia Tribune.

The telephone poll, conducted last week by a respected Washington consultant, Ron Lester and Associates, asked 400 likely voters, all African-American, whom they would support if the election were held today.

    The results:

    Chaka Fattah …. 27 percent

    Dwight Evans …. 18 percent

    Tom Knox ………14 percent

    Mike Nutter…….. 9 percent

    Bob Brady……… 8 percent

Nearly one-quarter of the city’s black voters – 24 percent -- remain undecided, according to the survey.

Lester credited Knox’s television advertising with his climb over the past six months. Last October, he barely registered among African-American voters, getting just 1 percent in a similar poll.

    FTP:

    Woohoo!!

    Go Dwight!

(Oh, yeah.. I'm supporting him...) I wonder if Congressman Fattah's golf handicap lowers those numbers over the next week?

Has anyone seen the Brady office at 21st and Market? Talk about overkill!! (I wonder if there is another company in that building that does retirement planning.....)

    WardWatcher [TypeKey Profile Page]:

the last time the Tribune did this poll, it was widely whispered that the Mayor had paid for the poll from his campaign funds - did this happen again? to me that calls into question the poll's credibility.

of course, the rest of the rumor was that Lester polled the entire city, but that Fattah's citywide numbers were not as impressive, so that is why they only released the results of the black voters....

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Plus, doesn't Mondesire own the Tribune? If that's the case, and there were bias, you would think that Fattah's numbers being bad would be desirable since Mondesire, from what I hear, is behind the fattahxray.com website.

    karen:

Mondesire owns the Sun (not the Trib) and yes he is behind the fattahxray.com website

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

    I stand corrected. Thanks, Karen.

    Isabelle:

I'm with FTP----great news for Dwight!

    Wendy:

We checked with the Philadelphia Tribune's Robert Bogle on WardWatcher's comment that the Mayor had paid for the poll from his campaign funds.
Bogle issued an adamant denial. He said (to paraphrase a bit) that no one had paid for a penny of the poll's cost except the Tribune.

    WardWatcher [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I retract and apologize - sorry to spread rumors, but it didn't seem that outrageous on its face (it wouldn't mean the poll wasn't valid) and seemed logical considering the Mayor's interest in the race, large amount of cash in the bank, and relationship with Lester.

    again, all apologies.

    sj:

I fail to see why Fattah has such widespread support when most people arent the least bit familiar with his proposals as a candidate for mayor. It just shows you that name recognition is very powerful. I think those numbers will sink once Nutter and Evans start putting out more commercials. If they want to make headway they will be forced to suggest that Fattah is Street's preferred candidate. I don't think that will go over to well with most black voters.

    Wendy:

No apologies needed -- that's what we are here for -- tell us what you want us to check and we check it.

    Andy Daven:

I agree...I think Fattah's drop is going to become a tank as Dwight and Michael's ads come online!
