Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor not a mayoral candidate

Josh at the Metro's Fight For Room 215 talked to Chaka Fattah about his attempts to start a fundraising free-for-all appeal of the Commonwealth Court ruling on campaign finance.

There's the usual line about whether it's fair for Knox to be able to spend so much of his own money while the other candidates are so limited.

Fattah also diagnoses a pretty common rhetorical malady in our partners at the Committee of Seventy:

“I don’t remember a release from the Committee of 70 that if Ed Rendell could take unlimited contributions [in his campaign for governor] it would be chaos and pay-to-play politics,” Fattah said. “It’s like selective amnesia here.”

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Last I checked, Seventy was primarily concerned with local Philadelphia politics. I'm not sure why Fattah would expect them to get involved with a gubernatorial campaign. Sounds like he's trying to pass the buck.

Having said that, I hope Rendell follows through with his recent talk of implementing state-wide campaign finance reform.

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Wasn't Seventy under different leadership the last time Rendell ran for mayor? In fact, if I remember correctly, Zack Stalberg didn't even come on board until after the last mayoral election.

    bradybradybrady:

knox is buying the elction with his own money and fattah wants to buy it with someone elses money.

since when did pay-to-play become a campagn platform?!?!?

philly wants an election, not an auction.

how bout a real candidate who can win on his merits?
a candidate who can win votes not just campaign cash.

if brady can get 66% of the vote the way he just did from the afl/cio, we will be soon calling him mayor.

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Brady's been bought and paid for by the labor unions. I wonder how much of his campaign cash came from anywhere other than a labor union.

Sick of politics as usual in Philly :

This is the info at www.hallwatch.org on the House of Umoja, owned by the Fattah family, which owes over $46,000 to the city in prop. taxes. So if Fattah is worried about Rendell's finances, I suggest he clean up his own House of Umoja.

If the Fattah's want to help schools, I suggest they start by paying the property taxes that support city schools. The hypocrisy this paper lets candidates get away with if they are a certain race is PCism run amok.

Hopefully, the paper will get past flashy rhetoric and look at the data on the candidates.

"* These records come from the Philadelphia Department of Revenue. Hallwatch is not responsible for the accuracy of the Revenue Dept.'s records. They are current as of February 14, 2007"

But don't take my word for it: look up the data at hallwatch.org or just scroll through below. Delinquent taxes are after owner name, and after del. taxes are years delinquent:

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I imagine House of Umoja is tax exempt. Is there any way of verifying?

    Wendy:

    From the Umoja web site:

"The House of Umoja is a state licensed, tax exempt, non-profit organization."

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

So that probably means one of three things:

    1) Tax exempt doesn't apply to local property taxes
    2) Umoja forgot/neglected to apply for an exemption
    3) Whoever maintains the city's taxes-due database leaves something to be desired in the competence department

There is a pattern with Fattah in how he relates to the media and any one asking him tough questions, it's very John Street. It's a very "how dare you" posture. On every issue that he has received even the gentlest of questioning: his educational background, his family's finances, his voting attendance record, his position on campaign finance -- he has been incredibly defensive. Add this to his tendency to play his policy ideas very close to the chest, his resistance to talking about details - as documented in the Philly Weekly profile of him last month -- and you have an arrogance that is wrong for Philadelphia.

    Liz:

In response to the last post. Fattah will be no different than John Street, with regards to both corruption and egotism and lack of real ability to get things done. When his plan to sell the airport falls through, he will probablly go after an even bigger bond than the one Street got for NTI, in order to fund all of his idealistic-pie-in-the-sky-money-grows-on-trees-bloat-city-government-even-more-with-new-redundant-agencies-"social" programs. Expect Philly's finances to tip so far into the red, with all of this deficit spending that taxes go up, up, up. Expect 8 more years of push back on ethics reform, on making government efficient and modern, and on making Philly a place that looks foward. With Fattah the downward spiral that is Philadelphia continues. HE IS THE STATUS QUO.

Amazing video, in fact a good quality, this YouTube video touched me a lot in terms of quality.

I visited several web pages except the audio quality for audio songs existing at this website is genuinely marvelous.
