We just received this from Chaka Fattah's campaign, from spokesman Solomon Jones:
On behalf of those touched by Chaka Fattah’s 25 year record on violence prevention, education and housing, the Fattah for Mayor campaign will appeal today’s ruling.
We cannot allow one candidate to buy the election while others toil under limits that curtail our ability to share our record of service to Philadelphians. Our decision to appeal goes beyond legalities.
It is about providing Philadelphians with a fair opportunity to hear from each candidate, and make a decision based on their record, their ideas, and their vision for our city's future.

Should this surprise anyone? I mean we are talking about ChakaCON right? Or maybe we're discussing Top Golfer and hubby of everyones favorite newscaster, Arthur Davenport.

I have to admit, as much as I understand the value of TV spots in election campaigns ... I am a bit annoyed at how so many people think that JUST because Knox has unlimited funds, he WILL win.
You can have tons of TV spots - but oeople seem to forget one thing ... this is Philadelphia.
We like our newscasts anchored by the same decades-old faces, our roads by their old names (Delaware, River Drive, etc)( and balk at almost anything shaking up the status quo.
Most importantly, we traditionally vote from within.
Instead of court filings and appeals, perhaps one of these 'candidates' should step off their prepared remarks and wish-list proposals that can't be funded in today's state of the city and start actually talking to the residents of the city they want to lead.
The one who finally TALKS to us, will probably win. It sometimes is THAT simple.

Off topic but...
Fattah - Sits in the majority on the powerful Appropriations Committee which oversees $800 billion in discretionary spending.
Evans - Chairman of the State Appropriations Committee
Brady - Member of House Armed Services Committee & Committee on House Administration
With Democrats in the majority in both Congress and the PA House - I can't imagine why these guys think they can do more for Philadelphia as Mayor than they can as influential members on some top government committees.

If Fattah wants his views heard on TV (in addition to his last name every night on channel 10), he can get off his butt and start making fundraising calls. If he has enough support to get elected then I'm sure he can raise as much money as Michael Nutter and Dwight Evans have through their grassroots bases. I read somewhere that Nutter spends 5 hours a day making fundraising calls. It's all about how hard you're willing to work and how badly you want to get elected.

shame on Fattah for shamelessly pushing this lawsuit. if Chaka had dropped this case months ago, the ethics board and the city could have focused on enforcing the limits instead of defending them. where is the outrage that the frontrunner (ie our likely next mayor) fights so hard to not follow the rules?!?!?

Dave, ChakaCON Davenport is lazy. Even Brady has said so. If this race stems down to who's working hardest to get in City Hall, Fattah is LAST hands down.
To Robert's comment, it has nothing to do with Philadelphia. Look at Ross Perot who spent tens of millions that got him nowhere.
The last 4 weeks WILL be the race as everyone spends money.

This should be treated as a huge scandal, all over the papers. The headline should read: Leading Candidate for Mayor Hopes to Undermine Pay-to-Play Reforms, Subheadline: Fattah seeks to overturn campaign finance laws he may have violated.
Just who are these people running our media- this is a huge scandal, perputrated by Philly's leading, but yet to be uncovered, corrupt pol! Put it on the front page!!!! This has been the dark underbelly of this race since Fattah stretched the limits of his "exploratory" committee's work beyond what is legal- last Fall.
The real question is- who in the press is in Fattah's pocket?

I understand Renee Chenault-Fattah will be doing an investigative piece on this issue tonight on Ch. 10.

brady is firmly on the ballot.
if he gets 66% of the vote on election day the way he did at the afl/cio vote, youll be calling him mayor.

i should emphasize daves comment above, that there is no way i or anyone else would vote for a candidate that would turn the citys mayoral race into an auction. that goes for knox as well.
my vote is not for sale.
philly needs alot of things but cynicism is just not one of them.

Fattah has raised the least money because he is LAZY - he just doesn't want to work!

This is the info at www.hallwatch.org on the House of Umoja, owned by the Fattah family.
If the Fattah's want to help schools, I suggest they start by paying the property taxes that support city schools.
Hopefully, the paper will get past flashy rhetoric and look at the data on the candidates.
Bottomline: support schools with action, not pretty phrases.
