Bruce Crawley has a thought-provoking new post on his blog...he's taking on many things, including the idea that race isn't (or shouldn't be) a major factor in this race...
Is it true that the City doesn't still have "racially divisive issues" or is it, instead, just true that no one is talking about those issues, or talking about why they're important to the survival and maturation of the black community and to the City, itself?
Plus, there is a challenge to the "inevitability of Mike Nutter" and a reminder to pay attention to Chaka Fattah's poverty-fighting plans.
And it ends with this note:
A word to the wise: Philadelphia's black voters are still open to the same kind of direct appeal that Knox has already made to his fellow-Irishmen and that Bob Brady makes every, single day to his base in the skilled trades unions.
And that is true.

There's nothing "inevitable" about Nutter winning. He has momentum in his favor at the moment, but he'll need every vote he can muster to win (just like all the other candidates).

Who is Bruce supporting? Also, Ed Rendell catered to his "Center City base"...what a load of bs. Eddie had Citywide appeal.

Appealing to your racial/ethnic base... another part of the status quo I'd like to see done away with. It can leave by the same door as pay-to-play and political thuggery.
Honestly, is it too much to expect to have a mayor who wants every part of Philadelphia to be clean and prosperous? A mayor who wants every Philadelphian, black, white, or whatever, to do well and prosper?

I asked Crawley. He said he was not working for or publicly backing a candidate.

I don't see how Nutter fighting corruption and campaign finance aren't "Black" issues (to use the rediculous term from the blog). Corruption hurts ALL Philadelphians - and if you want responsible social programs, you need to have responsible people running them. Moreover, the finance limits ensure that the "fat cats" in this City don't control all the issues because they control all the money flow. Again, this helps ALL Philadelphians.
What are "Black" issues? To assume they are just crime and social programs is insulting to all Black Philadelphians!

Black voters will not vote for white candidates -that is what Fattah is banking on!

black candidates will vote for white candidates. They voted for Rendell both times he ran for mayor.

Black voters will vote for whoever they hear from the most. Every urban format radio station plays Knox commercials twice an hour all day long. He is on TV all day long. Its like brainwashing you hear it enough times and believe it.
