(Bumped to the top -- Wendy)
As the Inky said this morning, there are a slew of new ads up. And they are rougher on the competition than what we've seen so far.

You know what that means -- play media critic for a minute, and tell us what you think about them.

Take a look at the ads below and leave us a comment...

    Michael Nutter's "Fights" ad:

    Chaka Fattah's "Passion" ad:

    Bob Brady:

    Tom Knox:

    Dwight Evans' "Right Now" ad:

How can Fattah use clips from House floor speeches in a political ad? Isn't that against the law?

    Jill:

I's surprised that they were able to find video of him actually on the house floor, considering that he has a high rate of absenteeism and loves to play golf with the republican caucus.

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Nutter: I like the inclusiveness message. He's always struck me as one of the candidates who, if elected, was most likely to be fair and try to work for the best interests of everyone in the city. I know the message will resonate with many, but not sure if it'll be enough. For better or for worse, many voters have a tendency to want their own agenda pandered to (maybe I'm being overly cynical here, though).

Fattah: the Clinton comments seem to be the center-piece. The rest of the ad is a fairly light-weight rehash of the "opportunity" message. Maybe the next ad will have Shaft in it...

Brady: being able to "walk on the street without fear" is a pretty powerful message in Philly, no matter what neighborhood you live in. The newspaper article mentioned that it included a jab at Knox, but that didn't jump out at me when I watched it, and I doubt that'll be the case for most casual viewers.

Evans: I think it's fair for him to call Knox out on his lack of a record. However, Evans himself hasn't been completely truthful in portraying his own record so, at least to those in the know, the ad comes of as a little disingenuous. I also think that Fattah has opened himself up to criticism for being soft on crime by being somewhat single minded in his focus on hands-off programs like gun-buyback and security cameras (this in spite of what his own policy paper(s) say). If you're looking for somebody "though on crime," Fattah is definitely not your candidate.

wasn't brady's dad a port authority cop and not a patrol cop?

you can tell a campaign is broke when they can't afford to use video. Fattah is in trouble if they don't figure out a way for him to speak in his ads.

Knox's ads prove quantity trumps qaulity.

Nutter's ad is really bad, because he is clearly reading a teleprompter and if you are saying passionate words like "black genocide" it can't appear like it was written for you by a political consultant.

Brady's ad is interesting visualy, it will grab attention and obviously isn't reading, maybe if we can combine Brady's genuineness with nutter's smarts, we'd have a really great candidate.

Evan's ad is really effective, simple, well done though I wonder if you are going to attack a rich guy if you should really just attack him badly because Knox will attack back no matter what.

    austin:

I like Fattah's ad – We need somebody in Philadelphia with a grasp of local issues and a nationwide reputation. The Congressman has shown that he is the only person who can speak for the city on both levels (local and national,) and that will reap all Philadelphians benefit as we continue to strive to become the next great city.
I am excited that this has been a mayor's race about the issues. Hopefully all the candidates (and their supporters) will be able to stay on topic. The next four years are crucial to Philadelphia, and the next mayor will have to be a tremendous leader, not somebody who does the best job at focusing the campaign devolving into petty, silly
    attacks.

    That you, Chaka?

    Liz:

I'm not sure what a nationwide reputation has to do with running Philly. If Fattah's rep is so great- why doesn't he get some national money back to Philly, and fast. It seems more like his national focus has left him with a bad understanding of what is going on locally. He really doesn't seem to get municipal government.

Anyway back to the ads- Nutter is clearly try to pick up more of the Black vote with this one- probablly away from Knox and not Fattah/Evans. Even though he is reading from a teleprompt, he is showing that he understands that the murder crisis is only that way way way disproportionately afects Blacks, and that it is the result of alot of thigs beyond what the Black community has control over. It is also interesting that- as I belive Nutter said in the Philly mag article- the black folks in the high-shooting areas do seem to approve of and even welcome his "crime emergency" plan, and only those in safer hoods are talking about civil rights issues. Between this ad and earlier ones in which he dares street supporters to vote for another candidate- Nutter is saying to Black folks- I will fight for you- in ways that Street is not. Alot of people want to hear that- and with Nutter, he has a record to back it up.

    I'm a homey too:

I like Chakka's ad because it excludes everyone but us black folks - talkin' bout Shaft.

    Son of Anoymous:

Like I said in other posts, Nutter's advisors are killing him. You can see his head moving as he reads the words going by on the teleprompter. I know most of the city's homicides are black youth, but why should Black's vote for you if you don't have the desire to engage thier community? I have a feeling Fattah is saving some cash for the big push which is coming soon. Everybody Knows how I feel about $Knox$. Bob Brady seems like a decent guy, but one of my prerequisites for mayor is; they must be able to speak English... clearly. I'm a stickler for this, sorry Bob. Dwight, stop looking so angry. I't just isn't your time. (sigh)
