    Seven Days in the Mayor's Race

    Busy week next week, folks -- I had to hide almost all of it behind the jump.

    Still, here's your weekly update of upcoming events in the mayor's race!

    Upcoming Events:

    MONDAY
    “Design for Community and Quality of Life” Mayoral candidates forum

    (April 9, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm, The Montgomery Auditorium of the Free Library of Philadelphia, Central Branch, 1901 Vine Street)

    This event is a mayoral candidates forum focusing on issues affecting the look and feel of neighborhoods. An emphasis will be put on the physical design of Philadelphia. The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
    The forum will be moderated by Chris Satullo, Editorial Page Editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Audience members will also be allowed to submit questions.
    Hosted by the Design Advocacy Group, American Institute for Architects Philadelphia, Local Host Committee of the 2007 American Planning Association Conference, the Community Design Collaborative, the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Inquirer/University of Pennsylvania's "Great Expectations: Citizen Voices on Philadelphia's Future."

    Urban Professional Forum
    (April 9, 7 pm - 8:30 pm, The National Constitution Center's Kirby Auditorium)

    The Urban League's "Urban Professionals: Philly Under 40" candidates forum will be hosted by Sheinelle Jones, FOX TV 29 and Colby Colb, Radio-One 100.3 The Beat. RSVP: ulyp@urbanleaguephila.org; the event is free but parking is $7 Open to public.

    Phila. Forward April Tax Reform Meetup - Meet The Next Mayor

    TUESDAY
    Candidate Forum: Philadelphia Bar Association

    (April 10, 11:45 am - 1:45 pm, Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Wanamaker Building, 100 Penn Square East, 10th Floor)

    Jane L. Dalton, Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, will host a mayoral candidates forum to discuss key issues that are important to the residents of Philadelphia and our membership. The program will be moderated by Joseph C. Vignola, co-chair of the Association’s Legislative Liaison Committee.
    Co-sponsored by Philadelphia Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section; Philadelphia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division; Barristers Association of Philadelphia; Asian American Bar Association of the Delaware Valley; Hispanic Bar Association; South Asian Bar Association; National Bar Association Women Lawyers Division.

    Poverty & Prosperity in 21st Century Philadelphia: An Interactive Agenda-Building Exercise
    (April 10, 3 pm – 6 pm, The Enterprise Center, 4548 Market St.)

    The final event of this series brings together national and local experts to discuss the state of poverty alleviation and wealth creation in the United States today. After a presentation on New York City’s plan for Increasing Economic Opportunity and Reducing Poverty, a panel of leading professionals will discuss what Philadelphia can learn from New York’s initiative. For the second half of this event, in small break-out discussions, all participants will help build a “citizens’ agenda” for Philadelphia’s next mayor.
    Panelists include Willie Baptist, Founder, University of the Poor; Gloria Guard, Executive Director, People’s Emergency Center; Michael Katz, Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania; Sharmain Matlock-Turner, Executive Director, Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition; Veronica White, Executive Director, New York City Commission on Economic Opportunity.     WEDNESDAY
    Shame of a City DVD release party and screening

    (April 11, 7 p.m., the Trocadero Theatre, 1003 Arch Street)

    Free screening of Tigre Hill’s movie about the 2003 election, with a question-and-answer session to follow.

    NOTE: Wednesday, the Philebrity/The Next Mayor New Rules voter registration drive will be at the Trocadero Theatre from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the Shame of a City screening .

    THURSDAY
    Avenue of the Arts, Inc. Mayoral Candidate Forum

    Fairmount Civic Association Candidates' Night
    (April 12, 7 pm – 9 pm, Mennonite High School, 860 North 24th Street)

    The Fairmount Civic Association will be hosting a Candidates' Night. The event is free and open to the public. All mayoral candidates and candidates for the fifth District Council seat have been invited to attend the event.

    Great Expectations & Cross City Campaign for School Reform Candidate Forum
    (April 12, 7 pm – 9 pm, Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 615 North Broad)

    The mayoral candidates forum on education issues, co-sponsored by Great Expectations and the Cross City Campaign and using questions developed at the April 5 event, will be held at Rodeph Shalom Synagogue, 615 N. Broad St., from 7 to 9 p.m.
    You do not have to register to attend. Free, secure parking will be available for G.E. participants at The Inquirer’s garage at 15th and Callowhill. That is a brisk but doable walk to the synagogue, which is also quite near the Spring Garden stop of the Broad Street subway.

    NOTE: Thursday, the Philebrity/The Next Mayor New Rules voter registration drive will be at Temple University from noon to 2 p.m.

    FRIDAY

    The 2007 Future Leaders’ Mayoral Forum
    (April 13, 1 pm – 3 pm, National Constitution Center 525 Arch Street)

    The Philadelphia Children's Commission has partnered up with several other organizations in an effort to bring together a group of youth from across the city and help them flesh out their concerns and their proposed solutions. They will then present these ideas, and their questions, to the Mayoral Candidates at the Mayoral Youth Forum.
