The Philadelphia Business Journal is currently conducting a poll that asks:
The mayoral race: Who's best for business?
So far, it's Knox 44, Nutter 40, Brady 6, Fattah 5, Evans 5, with some interesting comments.
Feel free to jump in and cast your own vote. I think the polls close on Friday.

A couple of those comments look like they're mostly commercial quotes.

To suggest that fighting and actually overcoming poverty is somehow counter to the interests of business just shows the poverty in the thinking of the business-leadership in this town. Isn't it good to create and build purchasing power among the hundreds of thousands of people who don't now have it? That used to be understood by business, but now business leaders seem completely obsessed by the idea that tax cuts will fatten their bottom lines.
Fattah is best for business because he's best for people. It should be obvious.

Fattah is best for welfare queens and other lazy bums.

If Philadelphia were full of rich people swelling the tax rolls with extra money that could be spent on socialist programs, maybe Fattah's ideas would be worthwhile. However, as Fattah himself says, a quarter of the city is poor, and he's proposing that we help the poor with tax money. Sounds like a bit of a circular dependency there.
In a city without enough businesses, that's losing jobs, the answer to the problem is the make the city more business friendly and attract more businesses. That should be obvious.

One reason I prefer to rent since moving to this city last summer. If someone like Fattah or Brady wins and tries to raise taxes, I can leave. My company already moved 800 jobs to the suburbs. They'll move the rest and maybe we'll take the 1000 Philadelphia Stock Exchange employees with us.

For the record, from everything Ive seen, Brady intends to eliminate the business privilege tax and cut the City wage tax. It seems that he realizes that Philly is losing jobs to the suburbs, and that new construction in the City are fueled by tax abatements or KOZ's.
Fattah, on the other hand, leaves the door open so he can fund his programs. He has stated that he holds his concept of "eliminating poverty" above all else. Apparently he isn't aware that the great society failed miserably.
Knox and Nutter both say that they want to cut taxes, but honestly I don't think they have the political acumen to get the job done.
Which, once again, beings us back to Brady. A good balance of crime fighting, cutting taxes, and the ability to handle thorny union negotiations.

Jill,
you are being disingenuous. None of the candidates has proposed to stop the small tax cuts, not even Fattah. I understand you are posting daily to drum up support for Brady but you shouldnt make things up. Fattah has not indicated he will raise taxes or even freeze tax rates to raise money for his programs. He is basing much of his plan on leasing the airport which may or may not be possible. Fattah may not be pro-business per se, but he has not indicated he supports higher taxes. The wage tax reductions are locked in place for the next few years and should increase once the gambling starts. There is little the candidates can do to stop the wage tax reduction plan.
I do not see how Brady is going to "handle" union negotiations when he is 100% pro-union. Brady and Fattah are both likely to be soft on city unions and give away the farm to avoid any conflict. They are any unions best ally and tax dollars will flow freely into pensions, benefits and salaries if they are elected.

I am not "making stuff up", let's think about this. Fattah has stated on the record that he wants to "restructure" the business privilege tax but that any such changes would be "revenue neutral". HUH? The reason that business move jobs to Montgomery and Bucks is because of the tax burden.
Also, Fattah has stated that he does not consider center city business development to be a priority. The double whammy of "revenue neutral" BPT changes and a disinterest in CC results in... NO NEW JOBS FOR PHILADELPHIA.
Secondly, Fattah's plan to lease the airport is tenuous at best. So, if the lease plan does not go through (which is likely) his options are 1) borrow money or 2) increase revenue.
The City's credit card is maxed, which leaves.. you guess it... higher taxes to support his LBJ style great society programs.

Nutter not only has the "political acumen," he's actually done it. He's the reason we have tax cuts at all now because he stood up to Mayor Street when he tried to halt the wage tax cuts started during the Rendell administration. It's also because of Nutter's "political acumen" that Street caved and agreed to sign a bill that cuts the gross receipts tax. So, yes, you're making stuff up, Jill.

One thing I¡¯d like to say is the fact before obtaining more personal computer memory, consider the machine directly into which it could be installed. When the machine is actually running Windows XP, for instance, the particular memory limit is 3.25GB. Setting up more than this would basically constitute some sort of waste. Make certain that one¡¯s motherboard can handle the upgrade amount, as well. Great blog post.
