The Inquirer reports:
Democratic mayoral candidate Bob Brady received a cell-phone call threatening his life just before he took part in last night's debate.
The call came around 6 p.m., just as Brady was entering the National Constitution Center, said his campaign spokeswoman Kate Philips. Though the caller reportedly threatened to kill him, Brady thought it a hoax, she said.
Nonetheless, at his staff's urging, Brady, a congressman, reported the threat to Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, who in turn alerted Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross, Philips said.
OK, this gives me a chance to say something that has been on my mind.
There's one week to go until election day. Thus far, Philadelphia should be proud of the election it's had. There are five qualified candidates, who through months of campaigning stayed on the issues, appeared before an endless parade of civic groups to explain their ideas, and even -- with the exception of the one candidate who didn't have to -- stayed within campaign finance law.
Now that we are in the final days, the expectation is that this race will go nuts. Because that's what Philadelphia elections do. Just last night we had a death threat, a shouting match -- and the ugly insertion of racial divisiveness into the campaign.
We don't have to do it this way.
This election should -- and still can -- stay above the bare-knuckle grudge match level of traditional Philadelphia politics.
Sorry to sound like a hopeless optimist, but really, if we want better for our city, it does start with better elections. If we can't hold an election without the ugliest features of Philadelphia politics, then we have no right to complain about the ugliness of old-fashioned Philadelphia government.

Here's an issue...
The following is from Fattah's website. It never actually uses the words "Stop and Frisk", but it sure sounds like that is what he's referring to. Does anyone know for sure?
Designate Patrol Officers to Go After Illegal Guns. With our existing police force, we will designate specially trained patrol officers in each Police District to go after illegal guns and the criminals who are most likely to use them. This targeted enforcement has been proven to be effective in other cities. A 1992-93 study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania's Lawrence Sherman showed that targeted patrols in an area of Kansas City, Missouri with a murder rate six times higher than the city as a whole showed a 49% drop in gun crimes and a 65% increase in gun seizures. A 1997 study in Indianapolis showed that targeted patrols in one high crime district reduced gun crimes by 29%.

That Kansas City program is indeed the same program that Michael Nutter is referring to.

Sounds like Dougherty is worried about the ultimate knox collapse - and knox will collapse

Kudos to Brady for brushing off the menacing phone call before the debate.
Not only did he have to contend with that last night, but also C. Montgomery Burns (a/k/a Tom Knox) threatening to "kick his butt".
On top of that, word has it that the local 98 guys were out in force last night toting Knox signs outside the constitution ctr. Afterword, overheard was, "hey, beers on Knox... take him for all he's got" as they unloaded a cooler from the back of a Ford F-150.
Knox's support is paid for and shallow. Now he is spending $800K this week on ads.
Did you see the panic in his eyes last night? I did. It was, good god... ive spent 8 million of my own money and I may not win.

Wendy, has that been reported in the news? That Fattah is attacking Nutter for something he himself is also planning to do?
Posted by Kevin | May 8, 2007 9:43 AM
Not in that direct way, though I would imagine the issue will be put to him today.
Posted by Wendy | May 8, 2007 10:09 AM
Yes Fattah is precisely attacking Nutter for something that he has proposed himself in his crime plan. Same study, same plan - he's just choosing differnet words to describe it.
His attacks basically have nothing to do with the "stop and frisk" policy that Lawrence Sherman's sudies based on Kansas City have proposed.
BTW - a real audio archive of Lawrence Sherman of Penn debating his proposal in detail on WHYY's Radio Times can be heard by clicking on this link ->

One of Fattah's policy researchers is a former graduate student from UPenn and was a student of....
Larry Sherman!
I'm guessing he might agree with Dr. Sherman's stop and frisk plan.

I still can't get over the fact that Tom "the living dead" Knox threatened to kick Bob Brady's behind.
I mean, has this guy come totally unhinged or what?
Is this the type of person we want leading our City? A power-mad, aristocratic dictator bent on vengeance?
Tom Knox is unfit to lead.
Posted by Jill | May 8, 2007 10:44 AM
Actually, Fattah doesn't mention his program in any terms. He has not really said he plans to get aggressive in terms of seizing weapons in any debates. He stays away from the subject when talking in public although his ads do mention "taking illegal guns from criminals". I cant believe the newspapers haven't called him out on this yet.
Posted by sj | May 8, 2007 12:48 PM
I can tell you right now the Phillyblog server almost died with all the vicious posting after Fattah's "You're not black enough" attack on Michael Nutter.
Suprise?

If it turns out that Knox and or Dougherty/Local 98 thugs were behind the threats to Brady, Knox ought to be kicked off of the ballot. I hope an investigation is pending, as this is quite terrifying... Death threats? And the I'll kick your butt comment? This scumbag might become mayor? SCARY!

John Johnson b. 1675 married Elizabeth Lucretia Massie first in 1698. They had children, including my gsgrandfather Benjamin Johnson. Lucretia died in 1711, and John married her sister Sarah Penelope Massie in 1712. Lucretia & Sarahs parents were Peter Massie and Penelope Ashley Cooper. The rumor is this Penelope is the Penelope Ashley Cooper, the illegitimate daughter of Anthony Ashley Cooper of Lord Shaftesbury. There is a question of whether Sara Penelope Massie was married to John or his brother, William.
