The attacks are intensifying on the new guy at or near the top. From a Dwight Evans press release:
Dwight Evans will be joined by a 20-year police veteran to discuss mayoral candidate Michael Nutter’s proposal to institute a “Stop and Frisk” policy in Philadelphia tomorrow, Tuesday, May 8th at 10:30 AM on the corner of 52nd and Market Streets. Evans has repeatedly disagreed with Nutter’s proposal, calling it tantamount to racial profiling. Evans announced for Mayor before more than 1,200 supporters on December 11th; his campaign slogan is “A Safer Philadelphia – Block by Block.”

Yes, Dwight I agree with you... Nutter's "Stop and Frisk" plan is short-sighted, dangerous and it is going to be very costly, lawsuit-wise to the city. All it takes is one racist cop to blow away an innocent black person and this city will be knee deep in lawsuit debt! Like Johnny Doc said... Nutter's getting his advice from a lily white think tank. Good for him. Sure glad I'm white... well of hispanic descent, natch!

Should be interesting to see if this big-name endorsement really makes a splash for Fattah or not. However, it's worth noting that Obama claimed to have looked up to Fattah's efforts in Congress when he was in the Illinois State Senate. At least, that's what he said a few months back.

FYI - Tom Knox has offered big $ to Evans for him to drop out.

So Dwight's going to stand on the city's deadliest corner and play the race card? No wonder his campaign is in last place.

Yes, dad your ramblin' is fine... but it's not going to help us with the millions of dollars in lawsuits that are a comin' not to mention the scores of black youth that are going to be murdered by the cops. Still glad I'm white, though! I'mstillasellout2007.com Go Nutter GO!!

Will you be filing the lawsuit? Did you also sue Kansas City, Pittsburgh and all the other cities that have successfully implemented this program? Or maybe it will be lily-white civil rights activists who will sue?
If I say I'm Hispanic, will I have more credibility?

the race card? Evans' pointing out the proclivity toward racial profiling amongst police is a perfectly appropriate thing for him to do.

People, People, I've got a secret to share with all of you on this blog. MOST OF US ARE WHITE! We don't have to worry about "racial profiling." It doesn't apply to us. White cops love and respect us and Black cops... well, who knows what they think! As long as they leave me alone while I walk with my girl in S-A-F-E center city. Go Nutter Go! Stillasellout2007.com

Well I'm Black and I think this can be implemented successfully WITHOUT cops killing people randomly.

Thanks "Philly" you just proved my point, like I said black youth getting shot by cops because of Nutter's stupid plan REALLY DOESN'T AFFECT ME!
Posted by Son of Anonymous | May 7, 2007 6:05 PM
What if I told you there's significant evidence that people in the neighborhoods where violence is a problem support this proposal?

I also fail to see what point philly proved for you. It sounds to me like you're trying to work all of us ignorant white people on this board up with rants about an absolute worst case scenario that has yet to happen in any city where stop and frisk has been implemented and is highly unlikely to happen in Philly if it's implemented here.

"Evans' pointing out the proclivity toward racial profiling amongst police is a perfectly appropriate thing for him to do."
Racial profiling and stop and frisk are not one and the same. I hope that this is a well informed discussion that notes the legality of stop and frisk and the disproportionate impact of the current murder epidemic on African-Americans. I also hope Evans details his reasons for not pursuing a constitutional tactic that targets the guns that are used in almost all of the homicides taking place. But I remain skeptical. Fortunately, I believe that most African-American voters realize that Evans is a good state legislator, but not the man who should be the next mayor of Philadelphia.

Exactly. Traffic stops can lead to racial profiling, too. Should the cops stop handing out speeding tickets?

Once again all the candidates did a first rate job of pretending Nutter is endorsing racial profiling in the debate. This is obviously a case of pandering to the black vote but it could backfire. See, most blacks who arent criminals arent as upset about this idea as the well meaning liberals who have made this such an issue. What Fattah and Evans seem to be forgetting is that its mostly black people living in fear of gun toting thugs and the fear of being shot ranks pretty high as fears go. You have blacks quoted in today's Inquirer as saying they long for the day's of Rizzo's police department. I think Fattah, Evans and the rest are underestimating how badly blacks want safer neighborhoods. Business as usual and trying to scare people with talk of racial profiling may not work.

Don't stop and frisk...Let everybody have guns tucked in their waistbands when they're out in the street...H
Posted by hg | May 7, 2007 9:52 PM
Why is everyone only attacking Nutter? Fattah has endorsed the same plan in his policy paper. He doesn't use the term "stop-question-frisk," but Fattah cites the same study (Sherman from Penn) about the Kansas City program. Does Fattah not realize this is in his own policy paper?

PLEASE, bring stop and frisk to my neighborhood.
I would welcome being stopped by a cop every time I left the house. I would then know that the thugs would be off the street.
