    Everybody kiss and make up

Did you catch this little bit in Dan Gross's column in today's Daily News?

Making up is hard to do

After badmouthing Michael Nutter while supporting Tom Knox during primary season, electrician's union leader John Dougherty and the winning candidate exchanged pleasantries Sunday at the Sorrento Italian Market Festival. In a brief but cordial exchange, Doc pledged his support and Nutter thanked him.

You don't suppose they discussed Dougherty's ringing anti-endorsement of Nutter in the City Paper?

    Jasper Zeigler Jr:

Might as well take into count the horrible bashing that also took place here on this format between Knox and Nutter camps.

When it comes down to this funny type of blogging why is it necessary to be so ugly with one another whether you agree with someone or not.

By bashing someone it doesn't make you a better person. In more cases than none. It will only set one up for ignorance.

    Jill:

Let's face facts here. Knox conducted a smear campaign on Nutter for the last month of his campaign.

Despite the attempt to mend fences, these vicious nature of these actions will not be forgotten.

    Jasper Zeigler Jr:

Jill in the eyes of some fences can remain torn down if that's the majority feeling of the whole but what will this type of climate do for the city and its residents.

    Anonymous:

LOL! Poor ol' Johnny Doc. That guy is yesterday's news.

    Real Unions Work:

Let's get the facts straight - Johnny Doc despises Michael Nutter -the problem for Doc is that Nutter won!

Now -in his evil, subterranean and seedy world he and his misfits are preparing "the Spin". They need to be relevant again....they will not be in a Nutter Adminsitration. Despite the flowery rhetoric -there will be no place for this diabloical, self serving egotist at the table.

The REAL REFORM is best evidenced in the fact that Knox lost, and Dougherty was the General behind the loss -he simply cannot hide from that fact. He is a divisive, controlling and tyrannical union (sic) business agent that looks to only serve himself and remind everyone that his union misfits are grossly overpaid. He gives them the Kool Aid and they gladly drink it!

Now is the time to remove Dougherty and his self serving agenda from our city government -it is a government for the people and by the people and NOT influenced by Local 98 and Dougherty.

Good riddance Doc - take your act elsewhere - and just for the record -Local 98 and Doc were behind the "not a practising Catholic" piece distributed up here in the Northeast!

    Jasper Zeigler Jr:

    Thanks Real Unions Work :

I had no idea Mr. Doc was into so much. During the primary test I saw his name flying all over the place and never belonging to a union or working for the city his presence has never meant squat to me.

I sincerely appreciate your view. This is a upload for me and I truly see if Nutter wins the Top Clerk Position in November he will have to focus his energy and be strong about his convictions.

    Steve W.:

Jasper Zeigler Jr wrote [referring to Nutter]: "...focus his energy and be strong about his convictions."

In picturing that, why am I having this composite image of the Statue of Liberty, the statue of Billy Penn atop City Hall, the statue of Ben Franklin at the Franklin Institute and the statue of Lincoln down at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. all giving this enormous sigh?

Are any of us seriously expecting all these wonderful things coming out of Nutter on the road ahead? For there's such a thing as way overdoing it when it comes to wishful thinking. I mean, seriously. Come on people, get a grip!

    Jasper Zeigler Jr:

    Hey Steve :

I agree with you trying to maintain a focus on matters and being strong about convictions will be extremely difficult especially when Nutter's popular impact surge wasn't everyone's desired outcome.

I have my own thoughts about November which include Montco's DA Bruce Castor and MSNBC's - Hard Ball moderator , Chris Matthew's brother.

Regardless of Nutter's impending road ahead. I still wish him well.

    Frank Keel:

I wish all you cyber-geniuses would stop with the "Doc is dead" nonsense. As I've stated many times before, you don't know Doc and you don't understand Doc. And I doubt you ever will because it's easier and more fun to blindly accept the image of him portrayed by his political enemies, some who have been indicted and still more who are no more than unindicted co-conspirators. You are also engaging in over-simplification: "Nutter won. Knox Lost, therefore Doc lost." Local 98 supported a host of other candidates for City Council and Judge, all of whom won big. Batting average matters in politics, as well as in baseball. And, believe it or not, Doc was more interested in making sure Brady didn't win than in ensuring a Knox victory. As young, idealistic progressives, I would assume that you'd rebel - as Doc did - against Brady's fierce protection of the tired and ethically-lax political status quo. And it may gall you to think that Mike Nutter and Doc shook hands and exchanged pleasantries last weekend. They are both pros who, at the end of the day, only have the city's best interests at heart. As two men of influence in this town, they will work together. It's as inevitable as the flurry of "hate posts" this entry will generate.

    Terry Stevens:

    LOL! Frank Keel...what a joke.

    Frank Keel:

Thanks for proving my point, Terry. What an enlightened, pithy response! Introduce yourself to me sometime. I'd be delighted to meet a person of such high intellect.

    Working Families:

Frank (I don't live in Philly) Keel's spin was long overdue - he is wrong and that crap about Brady is highly paid PR with our husbands'union dues. Many of our husbands in 98 voted for Brady, but we needed to keep things quiet, because their BA Doc threatened their jobs and everyone knows it, so Frank can't spin that truth, but he can lie and try to deny it, We all know better.

Our husbands have very good paying jobs and enjoy being electricians and in the union. They pay a huge amount of money for their dues and that's OK, because as we said they get paid great money and benefits.

But we and our husbands would prefer just working and leave the politics out of it. That's the real problem. This is Dougherty's personal bank account for now and he always involves our men in his political crap.

We know Dougerty and he should either leave the union or get out of politics, but we suspect he does not have the COURAGE to Choose!!!!!!!!

    2007 Primary Facts:

John Doc's Record in the Primary for 2007:

    Losses:

Anastasia 1st Distict (Smoked by Di Cicco)
Roberts 2nd District (Anhiliated by Verna)
Jim Kenney #1 Vote getter (really kills DOC!)
Sharif Street (Doc's deal fell short and this kid is better than Bill Green)
Sean Kennedy MC Judge (the Irish requirement failed)
Tom "Fraud" Knox (exposed and rejected with Doc at the wheel early on this one!

    Wins:

Bill Green ( a real step backward - there were better candidates)

Ceisler (Judge) (here Doc is looking for a vote for his brother for DA if Lynn steps down.)

Janie Hackwell (ran unopposed but she has been aligned with Doc for too long and the people are sarting to see that she is really difficult to look at and continues to lead West Philly into a deeper abyss)

As for Seamus - that is Brady's candidate. Doc had nothing to do with it! Seamus was for brady because he is loyal -a word that is foreign to Dougherty!!!!!!!!!!

    Another Carpenter for Knox:

    Bob Brady,

Pack it up and head home. You were the biggest loser this election. You were endorsed by the Democratic City Committee, almost all of the ward leaders and most of the city's unions, yet you still faltered to a measly 15%. The amount of support you garnered should have vaulted you comfortably to number one by at least ten points.

The citizens of Philadelphia have demonstrated what they think you should do: grab your hammer and 2x4s, and see if anybody will hire you.

    2007 Primary Facts:

But Brady is the biggest joke of them all - he couldn't even carry his own ward as chairman of the party! He is an artifact of the old party ways amd a total joke if I ever heard it. He is surely going to face competition and eventually be removed from congress and the party. Running for mayor was the biggest mistake of his life. Better cash out all your secret pensions Bob.

Johnny Doc is dead! Long live Johnny Doc!

    PhillyDeservesBetter:

Is that really Frank Keel? Are you really a PR guy? Isn't Doc being investigated by the FBI? How's that going?

    THE Authorities:

Great- Johnnie Boy is being very cooperative..

    Steve W.:

Since Philadelphia is originating very little of its own wealth these days, all wealth amassed in this city now has to come from the outside therefore. Philadelphia used to be a wealth originator, but it isn't now. So, in attracting new wealth into this city from the outside, Center City Philadelphia must be kept in a constant state of euphoria. That is, those of the outside considering investing new money into this city are steered toward seeing that side of Philadelphia, and that side only. And from their only seeing that side of our city they are misled into believing that Philadelphia as a whole is this really happy, happening place all throughout. And sure, anyone might think that if that's the only side of our city they ever see. But there's a whole lot more to Philadelphia then just Center City, and for the most part it ain't pretty. But, the power of out-of-sight/out-of-mind, eh?

And could it be that Nutter's only task, assuming he is to be the city's next mayor, is merely to keep Center City going in a euphoric state?

Now as for Johnny Doc, resident of Pennsport (which for the most part is part of Center City and certainly its euphoria) he's not this great, charismatic leader/charmer/influencer that he appears to be. For if he were plucked out of Pennsport and made a resident of Northeast Philadelphia, for example, he wouldn't have any effectiveness in influencing anyone whatsoever. His whole strength comes from his Pennsport positioning, and without that he would be a fish out of water.

But what does carry strength in areas of this city outside Center City? For it is precisely there that this city as a whole becomes very disturbing. These are the outlying areas of the city that outsiders bringing wealth into the city don't see, and that they are assured they don't need to see.

And what is Nutter, if he becomes the city's next mayor, going to do about that? Be blinded by the Center City PR mechanism as well?

My view is that Philadelphia needs to get back to being a place of wealth origination once more. It was this once, and it has all the resources it needs to become this again. But will Nutter be taking our city in that direction? If so, I'm not seeing any solid indications of that yet. Rather, I'm seeing a "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" sort of thing going on here...

    Jasper Zeigler Jr:

Steve W you should have run for caretaker of Pennsylvania's largest Metropolis. Without doubt there is a " Mr. Deeds Goes To Town " sort of a thing in process and far as Philadelphia reaching back into the status of being a wealth originator. Seems to me too many folk are at the end of their emotional rope to consider the positive innovation you spoke of.

    Howard U.:

Great observations Steve W. It is nice to see that objective people can see through a Johnny Doc like you can. Maybe that is why he chickened out on running for Mayor, because he would have been obliterated.

His "strength", if you can call it that, is being disuptive and threatening; one too many mob movies he has seen if you ask me!

    2007 Primary Facts:

    Worth repeating!!!

Brady is the biggest joke of them all - he couldn't even carry his own ward as chairman of the party! He is an artifact of the old party ways amd a total joke if I ever heard it. He is surely going to face competition and eventually be removed from congress and the party. Running for mayor was the biggest mistake of his life. Better cash out all your secret pensions Bobby Boy!!! Did Carol Campbell bake you your goodbye cake yet?

    Frank Keel:

    Dear PhillyDeservesBetter:

Yes, this is Frank Keel. Is this really Jimmy Kenney? Did you write this brilliant post last night on your home computer or on your Blackberry while sitting on your favorite barstool? Don’t you think it’s time to cut the crap with these cowardly, sophomoric, anonymous attacks on Doc? He’s not the bad guy. Vince Fumo had John followed by a private investigator for 18 months. John has been as scrutinized as anyone in this city, yet there has not been one allegation of improprieties of any kind. Rather than shoot spitballs at Doc, people should start asking some hard questions of Senator Fumo’s wholly-owned subsidiaries, Frank DiCicco and Jimmy Kenney, who I suspect are behind a lot of these anonymous cyber-snipes at Doc. For instance, how many cruises and vacations did DiCicco and Kenney take on The Enticer? Were the indicted Senator and the newly-indicted John Carter along for the fun? Tell us all, Councilmen, were you ever aboard The Enticer? And why would Jimmy Kenney sell his South Philadelphia property to Citizen’s Alliance at less than market value at the precise time that the city was experiencing the hottest real estate market in its modern history? Inquiring minds want to know.

    Frank

    PhillyDeservesBetter:

Nope - this isn't Councilman Kenney. He's not cowardly like me, so he posts under his own name How's the FBI investigation of Doc going? I guess he wishes he was a bit kinder to Nutter, huh. Who's his pr guy? Oh, that's you. Do have other clients?

    Jeff Marshall:

Get your facts straight you anonymous liar – Doc and Local 98 do a lot of good for Philadelphia. More than the people behind all of these anonymous blog posts have ever done. It’s so easy to tear down somebody when your hiding on the blogs, but it’s hard to deny the facts that Doc is a charitable and community minded leader that isn’t going anywhere. THOSE ARE THE FACTS.

    Anonymous:

With the amount of federal and regulatory scrutiny that ALL labor unions are under these days the idea that Dougherty or 98 are up to anything is ridiculous. I don’t know why people have such a hard time with this – the FBI indicted Fumo, not Dougherty!

    PhillyDeservesBetter:

But Doc is being investigated by the FBI, right? I am not really impressed by the "good" that Doc does; lot's of people contribute significant amounts of time and money into their communities. It's great that Doc does this, but it doesn't distinguish him from thousands of Philadelphians who do the same. I am not a Fumo supporter; I don't know why you'd assume that somebody who doesn't think that much of Doc would be a Fumo supporter. I don't think much of either of them and I'm not unhappy to see Fumo in the position he's in and I'm relieved that Doc, Blackwell, and Knox won't be running the City.

    Steve W.:

If I might interject, right now I see Philadelphia as it must have been like in the Roaring 20s, that is, right before the Stockmarket Crash of '29 and the Great Depression that followed. For like it was then, everyone now is just going along with whatever. That is, whatever works so far as making money goes and inducing some sort of euphoric state. Forget any sort of logic to it all. And as has been the case for the longest time now, it's not what you know but who you know.

Now as for Johnny Doc, he possesses a tremendous indepth understanding of infrastructure, engineering and so on. Time and time again I've been extremely impressed by this remarkable gift he has, my reading pieces he writes for the Philadelphia Inquirer from time to time on that topic. But that's not why he's where he is. Rather, it's one of those who notices?, given the way Philadelphia is right now. So shy of that he has to go along and play the game like everyone else does. And he does the latter well, so much so that he himself is one of those it helps to know and be on the favorable side of, regarding those who are blue collar especially. But it's all like treading water right now as this Roaring 20s like state Philadelphia is currently in remains in force. It won't be for much longer probably, though likely pointless to say that for now.

Frank Keel must be desperate for some PR consulting money, so he can support his SUBURBAN home and lifestyle!

    Non Union for a Reason:

Jonny Doc spends Other People Money -mainly Union Dues from Local 98 workers. They all deserve each other in that union - they are underhanded and so preocuppied with political activity that it is a wonder that the city is not lit by candles.

By the way -how IS the Investigation of Doc going? Is he being cooperative?

    Steve W.:

As i say, likely pointless to say that for now...[sigh]

    Anonymous:

I AM COMMENTING TO NON UNION FOR A REASON? YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THE ONLY THING YOU SHOULD BE WONDERING IS WHY YOU AREN'T LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN A UNION. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INFORMATION FROM BECAUSE ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN WOULD KNOW THAT IT IS NOT UNION DUES THAT PAY FOR THINGS BEING DONE FOR THE GOOD OF PHILADELPHIA. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH IT COST TO RUN A UNION WHICH IS DONE BY UNION DUES? OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE NOT TOO EDUCATED IN GENERAL AND IF THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE EVEN BOTHERED BECAUSE IT JUST SHOWS HOW STUPID YOU ARE. THE REASON YOU ARE NON UNION IS BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO STUPID TO BE ACCEPTED INTO A UNION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
