    Get to know the Nutter-elect

Want to get to know the new (probably) Next Mayor, the heavily favored candidate for the fall, the Nutter-elect?

He will be interviewed live on WHYY's Radio Times (which starts at 10 a.m.) Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, you can read all about him on our newly renovated main site. We also suggest you check out the short, incredibly timely podcast recorded last night by Daily News city editor and politics guru Gar Joseph and political columnist John Baer.

Starting today, we'll start writing about how Nutter and his likely Republican opponent, Al Taubenberger, will campaign -- and about what the next administration could be like.

    Frank :

hi even though i voted for Tom Knox i will back Michael Nutter 100 percent. He seems like a guy who will turn things around and get this City back to greatness. I liked what he said about getting trash off our streets, and what he plans to do to fight Crime,Tasex, and Education.

    Tom:

Congratulation to Michael Nutter and wish him the best on his run for Mayor.

    Elbert Jones, Jr.:

I pray that MrNutter as the next Mayer, will get the Police instead of riding by when they are guys standing Infrount of stors, and corners dispurse the crouds.

    Yeagermeister:

    Elbert, whaaaat?

    Pat Ravernell:

I am so glad that Mr. Nutter won last night!!! I have said from the beginning that we would win. I don't and didn't know anything about Michael Nutter - but when I saw him up against the others who thought they were a shoe-in early, I said to myself that Nutter is going to be the next mayor
of Philadelphia and then when I heard what he had to say - I said "WINNER"!!!!

    Brucee:

Anybody is better than that good for nothing John Street.

    Friends of all of Philadelphia:

Congratualtions to Michael and the voters of the City of Philadelphia for rejecting the Fraud, Tom kNOx, Janie Blackwell and John Dougherty of the Evil Empire.

Fattah will be fine - he should embrace Michael, apologize for the things he said and recommit himself to Washington and bring home the assets the city needs.

Dwight is right where he should be and it is very important to Philadelphia that he remains as a force for us and we know he will work together with the team.

And Bob Brady -well he will work our great with Nutter, since they already have a great relationship. He defeated Dougherty and his nitwits and thugs and learned that we need to get rid of the backstabbers in the Democratic Party that take money from knox and shame all of our hard work. People have gotten the opportunity to really get to know Bob and people really like him. He will bring evryone under the tent -but please leave out the Three Diabloes Blackwell, KNox and Dougherty -they are a total disgrace and bad for any role in our city!

    sj:

The fact that Knox won so many wards in the NE shows that racial voting patterns are alive and well. Fortunately enough people were open minded enough to vote for Nutter. I cant honestly believe that Knox would've done nearly as well in the NE if was a different race. If you remove the NE from the overall numbers Knox got crushed yesterday.

    I like Tasex!

    Dave [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Thanks to The Next Mayor project for all their hard work and insightful comments covering the race. I hope WHYY, the Daily News and Committee of Seventy continue to refine their coverage process to reach a broader audience with even more helpful information.

One thought I'll put out there: maybe there should be fewer candidate forums that get replayed more often on TV and radio? One thing that drove me nuts in this campaign is that, by the time the final televised debates came along, some candidates had stolen the more insightful comments on certain issues from the more informed candidates. It doesn't seem to have mattered much in this case, since the election wasn't ultimately decided on the issues, but I think we should aim for the issues to have a greater role in the future.

    My $0.02

    James S., Miami Fl.:

Mike is a good guy, as is John Street. It would be wonderful to see them reach a rappoachment of sorts as the campaign and transition move forward. Philly is my home town. I miss all my friends and its institutions. John walked me around the law school at Temple when I visited for my admissions interview. His hospitality and openess were among the factors that convinced me to choose Temple Law. I played street football with Mike and other friends on Larchwood Ave as a high schooler and we stayed in touch for years afterwards. He will be a fine mayor and will bring the kind of intelletual power and intellectual honesty to the job that it deserves.
Congratulations to the voters for making a very good choice from among a field of quality alternatives.

    Leonard :

I like Mayor Nutter, he seems to be a fair man.
I hope he can bring new busineses into the city from othe rparts of the country and world.

A good nomination for a change

    Carla:

Although I was not a Nutter supporter bcuz of his continious focus on minimizing the "Street Effort", I must admit that he is the obvious choice for a change. Congrats Philly that selecting an obvious choice for change. We look forward to being the GREAT city we once were.

    Jennifer:

Although I voted for Bob Brady, I couldn't be happier to see Michael Nutter win. I guess Jon Baer's dream from last summer came true. I think this works out best.

    sj:

The only people I can see really being disappointed are:

    a) Johnny Doc and other power brokers who want to have influence in the next administration but probably wont.
b)Whites in the NE and other areas who only want to have a white mayor like Knox
c)People who buy into the fact that stop and frisk is a veiled attempt and violating civil rights and black men in suits will be randomly pulled over, frisked and beat down for no reason other than Nutter has authorized them to.

Most sane people should be pretty happy.

BTW, Street called Nutter last night and wished him well. I bet that was a sincere phone call.

    Wendy:

I agree, Dave. Though this was a blast, there were all kinds of things I would do differently, and that is one...both Nutter and Fattah tried to limit the number of forums, but once they started they were a force of their own.

    bob:

The way Brady and Fattah acquitted themselves here, one is left to wonder what are the standards for being a US Congressman: pretty low indeed. And Fattah has won 7 times! The power of the incumbency mixed with the wonders of the Gerrymander. While Mr Mondeshire is a grandstander par excellence, I wish him luck in his efforts to send Fattah packing from Congress. His ill-advised comments about Mr. Nutter's racial authenticity hopefully will lose him two elections. Like Bill Gray, perhaps brother Fattah should head up the UNCF or NAACP: where he can pander to base racial identity politics all he wants.

    Frank Keel:

Hey,FOAP, you pea-brained, bed-wetting dunce, check the "Wins" and "Losses" columns before you embarrass yourself any further. Local 98 supported Seamus McCaffery, Bill Green, Jr., Ellen Green-Ceisler, Bob Mulgrew, Blondell Reynolds Brown, Bill Greenlee and Michael Erdus, among others. Everyone of them won their election. Yeah, Knox lost. Local 98 only got seriously behind Knox in the past couple of weeks. In retrospect, Knox would have fared better had 98 gotten involved earlier in his campaign. 98 had one loss against double-digit wins. I'll take a .900 batting average any day. Knox and 98 acquitted themselves honorably. I can't say the same for you after reading this drooling, moronic post.

    Breaking News! Attention All
    Small-Minded Johnny Doc Bashers!

All of you who are celebrating Mike Nutter's victory while simultaneously predicting the political demise of John Dougherty, know this:

Early this morning, Mike Nutter placed a call to John Dougherty. Mike acknowledged that he and Doc have had their differences, but added that he took none of it personally, needed John's help in November, and wanted John's support in helping turn the city around. It was a gracious gesture by Mike Nutter, which was returned in kind by Doc, who also congratulated Mike on a beautifully executed campaign. Their exchange was also evidence that Doc will continue to be a prominent player in Philadelphia politics, even in a Mayor Nutter administration. So, for all of you cyber-vultures who were hoping to pounce on Doc's political carcass, try eating some crow instead.

    Greg:

Oh yeah, Frank, did you know that Bush placed a call to Nancy the morning after the election? Those two are great friends now, just like John Doc and Nutter will surely be. Doc will still be prominent in the party no doubt, but he's going to have a lot less levrage over Nutter than any mayor we've had in his adult lifetime. That's how change starts.

Frank -sorry about wetting the bed -we usually change the sheets before you get home! You sure you and Doc didn't make the mess in your bed?
