So, the latest on the "One Step Closer" ad (an independent ad attacking Michael Nutter) is that it has been rejected at NBC 10.
6 ABC and Fox 29 are said to still be thinking about whether to run it. And CBS 3, has run it, according to the group.
Pair this info with the news that radio stations are cool to the idea of the now-on-radio Ken Smukler ad, and I am wondering if the broadcast stations of this city aren't getting an attack of concience, seeing these independent ads, unfettered by campaign finance limits, as what they are: smarmy. (I've said before, attack with your own campaign money and put your name on it, and good for you. Hide behind some shadowy, outside the rules group, and ... yuck.)
Verrrry interesting.
Though a lawyer's letter may have more to do with the fate of that Smukler ad.
And I still think the real purpose of these groups is to stir up media coverage. And yes, we've done our job with that today.

They should let the ads run...the campaign finance laws in this race have ruined the process - ruined it!
knox is a snakeoil salesman and is committed to continue misrepresenting himself and B.S view of his life.
So let the ads run and deal with it.

There is a deal between John Street, Janie Blackwell and Sharief Street (does not include Milton). Doc supports and puts workers out for Street to get elected to the At Large seat - Street's VOTE is COMMITTED TO JANIE BLACKWELL for the Council Presidency. Doc has been cultivating this relationship with Blackwell for the past few years, since he is an outcast with everyone else.
The deal between Doc and Street is REAL! It also includes the recent hiring of Tom Mcdade(check name) as a $65,000 Assistant to L & I Commissioner Bob Soulvible -this move was tucked neatly into this deal for Dougherty.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT WE JUST SAID? -L & I has a shortage of inspectors and clerks and these idiots hire a $65,000 a year assistant. This crap is why everyone wants to throw the bums out. The Commissioner (sic) already does nothing -absoultely nothing and he now has a $ 65,000 a year assistant from Dougherty.
WHERE IS THE NEWS COVERAGE ON THIS??????
If Nutter is elected this guy goes and Solvible is history.

Is the ad that CBS supposedly ran the *blatantly false* "suspend constitutional rights" version or just the misleading and highly questionable "give police new powers" version?
Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2007 11:57 PM
Good question. I did not see it on channel 3 -- that news is according to Shawn Fordham, a longtime aide of Mayor Street and consultant to One Step Forward.
But the edited ad was out pretty early yesterday, so I think it was the edited ad that aired.
There's also the chance that OSF is continuing to change the ad a bit based on what the stations say. There could be several versions -- though remember, it was a smallish ad buy.

I already had plenty of reasons to avoid watching CBS 3 - but here's another.

It would be nice if the stations all agreed on a policy against running ads from 527s during a particular period of time before an election. The current batch of ads basically strikes me as sore loser candidates running smear campaigns against the front-runners.

Attack of conscience my foot. The media stations are all on the take because of Knox's $900K ad buy.
He is throwing his money around. My guess he shoveled enough to the TV stations to keep them quiet.
I am spending $900K this week, you run this 527 ad and I go to cable.

Morning Wendy. Like cloudy weather. I've always seen it as a magic burden for the sun to return.
Wendy this Nutter ad thing going around. Is it the one with folks marching across the Selma bridge.

Jill, I think you are right -- the stations are making enough money on this election to be able to reject ads. I don't know if there's a quid pro quo, but at least they are comfortable saying "no."
Also, I LOVE Dave's idea.
Finally, here's a question: Why no independent attack NEWSPAPER ads? We've got plenty of advertising, but I don't recall any independent ads...
Posted by Wendy | May 10, 2007 9:26 AM
Oh, I should also say that I am sure the stations are making less overall, even with Knox in the race, than they did in previous elections...thanks to the limits on four of the candidates.

wendy,
because we (collectively as philadelphians) don't read. we get most of our infor from tv and to a lesser extent radio

All the poorly drafted campaign finance limits have done is open the door for a self financed megalomaniac to buy the election.
He has already broken the promise not to spend any more. The next thing he will do, and I guarantee this, is that (if elected) he will break his promise and raise back every cent he has put into this election.
The campaign finance filings still show that money as a loan. His promises during the debate mean NOTHING and can not be enforced.

We are coming down to positions and issues and with TV advertising being restricted by campaign contribution limits and voters less engaged. Mayor hopefuls are more interested in recruiting their staff for election day field operations rather than ads appearing remarkably unfair.

I'm having a moment trying to understand why KYW Newsradio is upset because Tom Knox's campaign contributions of $ 9.25 million is close to the amount raised by all his rivals combined.

The campaign finance limits aren't poorly drafted. The United States supreme court threw a preemptive monkey wrench in them for this particular election when they ruled that self-funded candidates couldn't be bound to spending limits. The limits would be working fine in any other election without a rich guy running.
BTW, remember that Knox won't necessarily win this election.

Mmmm. I once supplied Franklin and Marshall College with some euro and now look at Terry Madonna the professor of polls , what a small world.
Very interesting 68 % of the undecideds in the Keystone Poll were women , more than double the level of undecided men. What's going to blow minds in this realistic life event called ( voting ) will be the inner world of African Americans , the middle age and those with less than a high school education who are always written off in the ugly perception context called - politics.

Hey Jimmy ,
What cracks me up is the fact :
Brady
Evans
Fattah
Nutter
All are cut from the same mold , that City Hall traffic trash that has caused Philadelphia and her surrounding communities undue anguish , poor antic governing , pay to play , decisions fitting themselves and the crooked establishment.
Jim one has to be almost blind not to see that their type of scheming off-course of things must end. Jimmy I can't wait until the 15th so I can get back to some kinetic enjoyment.

I agree. City Hall needs to change drastically and the only way to make BIG CHANGE is to remove the current politicians. All of the current politicans running for the mayoral race are part of the current problem. If their management style had been positive, the City would not be in the dire mess that it is in. Mayor Street was not the only individual who caused all of the city's issues.....the issues were caused by current politicans not doing an effective job for the residents of Philadelphia. The residents's of Philadelphia deserve to have a well-run city. If the current politicians could have done that, they would have done so already. TIME FOR A 360 CHANGE......GO TOM KNOX.....I HOPE YOU WIN this race. We need and deserve alot better. posted by a Philly Friend
