Boy, we are so sorry about the intermittent outages on our blog last night. You can guess what happened -- under the weight of record-setting traffic for The Next Mayor, our server just caved!
Fortunately, our outstanding systems brainiacs got to the problem extremely quickly, so that we could get back to the updates with little disruption.
Thanks for being patient while they worked.

Yes, the blog was one of the reason's people didn't fall for the old tricks this year. We really did have a better informed populace voting this time.
Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2007 2:41 AM
Philly would still benefit from limits on felon's voting rights, where the right to vote has to be earned back. Pols won't feel they have to kowtow, as Street seemed to, to the "crack house vote."
But the blog was a great asset in this primary.
We had an educated person's vote holding sway. There didn't seem to be the desperation for the drug trade vote.
Still you have pundits like Annette John Hall who think that felons are what Martin Luther King, Jr. died for. Nevermind that felons are many races altogether. Nevermind that Martin Luther King Jr., as a minister, would likely have supported restrictions on felons voting until proven to be rewoven into the community fabric.
This is the kind of nonsense that keeps Philly filled with bad politics and rotten government.
The reasons felons don't get to vote is that they are not good citizens until they prove themselves to be. PA could learn a lot from other states about how to staunch corruption that gave us a drug and extortion investigation that led all the way up to the Mayor.
Maybe, thanks to things like this blog, people can put down their silly banners and think things through.

You guys are really making me smile veeeeerrrry late on Election Day...thank you so much!
I tell you, I'd sure love to find a way to work with all the people who read this to morph it into something more community-based ... bigger ... about the issues facing the next administration and the city...

I found the blog and the television broadcast to be a joke.
The blog going black during the height of the election frenzy.
Suburbanites providing "expert" commentary about a place they know nothing about and have no vested interested in, other than parasitical practice of stealing a paycheck before returning home.
* Wendy always looking for controversy because of her inability to seek a true story.
And of course there's Dan. a stuttering, bumbling fool who spent the early part of the day on this very blog making fun of volunteer workers, the democratic process, and then admittedly and jokingly pissed on that process. Then, in WHYY's infinite wisdom, provides television commentary on that very same process.
Dan, who took a handful of anonymous emails and made that the issue without providing any balance for the hundreds of thousands of people who voted peacefully and quietly.
And, Dan, who used prime time election coverage talking about the thing that's on everyone's mind, IRV???!!!! It's mind-boggling.
Some day this great city will get the media it deserves.

Convicted felons can and will vote. It is the hatered and smugness of certain types of people that keep this country from moving forward and correcting errors.
Convicted felons have served their time and have the right to vote. Let's hope that the right to vote is one asset in their portfolio that help them reintergrate and do great things for themselves and our city.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
Posted by tarot en català | October 26, 2011 8:08 PM
The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
Posted by videncia | October 26, 2011 9:27 PM
The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
Posted by tarot visa | October 28, 2011 2:24 AM
Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.
Posted by tarot en catala | October 29, 2011 2:26 AM
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
Posted by tarot barcelona | October 29, 2011 3:45 AM
Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
