Is it just me, or is mayoral news more fun in the summer? Candidates are loose and laid-back --Nutter fesses up about his personal finances, Bob Brady throws his beach bash -- and there's plenty of airtime for all kinds of other angles. This week, for example, independents and minor party candidates get their chance in the spotlight.
Aug. 1 is the deadline for any independent or minor-party candidate to turn in their nominating papers. And we have just heard from several people who plan to do just that.
Larry West, undeterred by the fact that the City Charter says he's too young to run for mayor, says he will file his papers Tuesday, July 31st at 10 a.m. He says he is running as an independent.
And on Wednesday, John Staggs, the Socialist Workers Party candidate for mayor, will file his papers. Also that day Osborne Hart of the Socialist Workers Party will file for City Council at large.
What we know about Larry West (besides his age) is detailed on his Web site, here. Here's what the Socialist Worker's Party says about Staggs and Hart:
Staggs, a packing house worker, whose campaign last year for State Representative in District 198 forced the state of Pennsylvania to stop requiring the use of an unconstitutional loyalty oath for candidates for public office and Hart, a warehouse worker and member of UNITE-HERE Local 237, are campaigning as the working class alternative to the Democratic and Republican parties. At the news conference, the candidates will outline the Socialist Workers Party program in defense of workers rights at home and abroad.
No word yet from Dr. Kerry Foster, who had said he planned to run (he had mentioned the Green Party, but that party tells us he is not their endorsed candidate). We'll keep you posted if we hear anything about him or other filers.
