An article from today, The Showdown on Hurley Street, struck me as hysteria. It's an eye-opener for anyone who doesn't understand the magnitude of the challenges facing the next mayor and all of us as a society. Would a child be potentially murdered because he won a game of basketball in front of people?
Is it this easy for people to die? If this is truly the worst street in the city, which the police in the article attest, then how could it have degraded so? What can be done to bring back a block like Hurley Street while preventing other streets in the city from falling to this point?
I hope there is a way to prevent the other streets in the city from hitting a slippery slope until there are more stories like this one; stories of homicide, vendettas and vandalism. It seems like the more we try to improve things, the worse they become, unless we are just not working to improve in the right areas.
Even more important, how do we help the areas that have already slipped? Do we put the police there 24 hours a day? Perhaps. Do we declare martial law? Not yet, but I wouldn't rule anything out the way things are going. What would you do if you were the person in charge? How would you help the situation?

No I didn't move to Madagascar, but I know many were glad to see me go like John Street and Sylvester Johnson especially since I kept suggesting martial law, I was hushed several times by the two on this topic, I was told oh no you don't want to suggest that, I asked why not and I was told it would be a great inconvenience for many, on top of making the city look bad?????? Ah Hello??? The city already is looking bad!!!! However I have moved out of Philadelphia, the good Lord provided a safer environment for my 11 and 9 yr old and I gladly took it. After living in Kensington 16 yrs and witnessing first hand what it has now become, I was fearful for my life as well as my children. My last place of residence D & Indiana right on the corner up the street from Hurley.
My children were not allowed outside for many reasons, my neighbors were and probably still are drug dealers, They would sit on their steps and smoke pot all day long so playing in front of our house was out of the questions this was a great reason as well as the constant shootings, the fist fights, the prostitutes jumping in and out of cars, the dope fiends all dirty smelly and often nodding in front of my house on their way to cop and the loud music coming from the cars as they passed by blaring profanities in the lyrics 24/7 the walls to my house would tremble with every passing car and did i almost leave out all the trash in the streets . So I would have to take my children else where for entertainment cause my block was definitely not it, especially when I found out thru a town watch meeting that p sector as it is known by the police was at the top of the list as far as crimes was concerned the most devastating piece of info i could of found out was that the majority of all pedophiles are registered in this very same sector.
Not a place for kids to grow up in, not a place for anyone in their right mind to be in period. I was afraid to open my door unless i knew who it was, my children and i were forced to hit the floor many times when the sounds of bullets rang out. In the end i even moved them from the upstairs front room where they slept to a safer room in the back of the house for fear a stray bullet would come flying thru the window. I hardly ever slept soundly. I would often try to talk sense to some of these kids out there on the corner, trying to tell them they didn't have to live that life of smoking and slinging drugs, tried to tell them they were headed for jail or dead, tried to tell them to go back to school get a job some would say they were getting ready to do that, others would say that they were making more money in the streets, believe it or not respectfully they would thank me for talking some sense to them yet the next day or right away they would return to the usual business. As a community activist, block captain, committee woman and finally elected Ward Leader of the 7th ward I tried everything I could do to better my community fore I loved Kensington so much and still do. I talked to the cops reported crimes and activities attended many meetings with police commissioner Johnson as well as John Street and a host of many others in high places and all they would constantly do thru out the years was the same old story "we are doing everything we can" They would right down the info and nothing would be done. I fell out of grace with Johnson one day cause I spat the truth in his face and that was that many many cops were on the take or really didn't care especially those assigned in Kensington. I was also told once by an anonymous inside source that sometimes when a cop messes up his punishment may be to get assigned to Kensington of course this is hear say but i wouldn't doubt it cause in Philly anything is possible, this tells me its soooo bad in Kensington that the cops really don't even want to work this sector. Well enough police bashing cause not all are bad there still are some that do really care. So I did everything i could, one day i woke up and realized it wasn't getting any better and it wouldn't for many years to come. So I decided to leave and when I left i told many good people who are stuck in what I call little Iraq I told them to do the same if you can get out, go!! Cause its not going to get better.
I've been gone six months now yet I always keep tabs on my Philly by reading the daily news online.
All i see daily is how many more lives continue to be snuffed out in senseless violence and it saddens me cause I love Philadelphia, yet it is a daily reminder of why I left. I now reside in beautiful Fort Hood, Texas, It took a while for my stress levels and fears to calm down, I was still afraid to open my door for a while. One day i realized that i actually had post traumatic stress from livng in such deplorable low quality of life conditions in Kensington. Now we live in a place where you can actually forget to lock your doors at night and the only noise you hear at night or day is the ocasional frog, bird or cricket or the stress free laughter of the children who ride their bikes safely up and down the street. Oh how I often wish i could share this peace with the GOOD people who still live in my beloved Kensington especially the children.
