We'll have the transcript from the chat soon. I'm told was pretty intense but I missed it since I was holding cue cards.
For now, here are all of the questions that were submitted for the candidates. We could only get to a few of them in the time we had and we'll certainly work on ways to get to more questions when we do this in the future.
Click on "Continue Reading" to see all of the questions (unedited).
2. Fredricka Holland-Guy: I wouldlike to know what plan the next mayor has to support DHS in proving qualitative services. I would like to meet with each candidates about some of my ideas. I a a a former employee. I left DHS in 02/07.
3. A M: The city is filthy with trash and the recycling program is terrible - they won't even take plastic and calls to the center were futile, no one could help. What can you do about this?
4. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: THE RETAINING WALL ON THE BLOCKS OF JANE AN GODFREY STREETS WHEN WILL WE RECIEVE AID????
5. Larissa Mogano: I'd like to know if it would ever be possible to assign a secondary trash crew on trash days to pick up what the collectors accidentally and/or carelessly leave behind. This would help clean up our neighborhoods tremendously.
6. Francis Furdell: The Republicans took over management of the Parking Authroity and it's still ful of patronage-Mr Taubenberger has to take responsibility for that as a current board memeber?
7. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: WORK CALLS PLEASE E-MAIL ME OR CALL CONCERNING THE ABOVE. THANKS
8. Michael Cunningham: Will the next Mayor push to unprotect civil servant jobs so that these individuals will be forced to perform to keep their job like in private industry?
9. Jeff Hornstein: What is each candidate's relationship with the candidates for County Commissioners in MontCo? Point about regionalism is very important.
10. Cheryl Balas: Education.....I believe there are many people out there who do not have education degrees (like myself....I have a degree in marketing)...but have a natural ability to be teachers. What about the idea of a program that would seed to find such individuals......interviews and questionnaires.......and then helping them to attain the additional credentials that would enable them to be of service to the educational system. The school districts NEEDS to get and retain GREAT teachers.......those who can REALLY engage the students!
11. Damon Williams: For Tautenberger: Do you feel you have sufered from voter backlash from citizens who are upset at Republican leadership, both locally and nationally?
12. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT HELP YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE US CONCERNING THE ABOVE SITUATION?
13. Cheryl Balas: Since I live outside the city (but work here) I apologize for not being as up on the issues as I could be, which brings me to my question concerning taxation without representation......what are your views (each of either of you) on the fact that MANY people pay a city wage tax because they are coming into the city every day, but have NO SAY in what is going on here? We spend a lot of our time here and many of the issues facing the city affect us as well.
14. Francis Furdell: What will you do to stop the racial divide that continues to plague the city?
15. John Monaghan: What is your position on the lame duck Street Admin's decision to to change an agreement in plance since 1928 about rent. The Boy Scouts are a positive influence on young males, why punish them?
16. John Edwards: In addition to demanding more money for the the largest school district in the state of Pennsylvania
17. John Edwards: what do you plan to do in order to reform and tke back the failng school district.
18. Bob Sola: I moved into Fishtown in 2005. because of casinos - I am moving out. This isn't a question - it is a fact. Any thoughts?
19. Alex Feldman: The recent Travel and Leisure Mag poll named Philadelphia the least attractive city in our nation. Perhaps this poll is less about fact than about perception. How do we improve the image of our city and promote its positive aspects to our city, region, and across the country?
20. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: THE QUESTIONS SUBMITTED WERE/ARE AN EMERGENCY.
21. Fredricka Holland-Guy: the streets of Phila. are filthy. I live in the area of 7th and Lombard. The city rec center, Star Garden is one of the worst offenders. Dirt and leaves is not cleaned up on the 7th street side. In the winter time, the snow is not removed. Trash men drop tras and leave it where it's dropped. Streets need repaving. For the property values to be as high as they are how come we cannot get better service.
22. Jared Klein: What are your thoughts on city funding and support of the Arts? What would your administration do to enhance the Avenue of the Arts and attract arts based tourism to Philadelphia?
23. big leed: do you see yourself reducing crime like NYC? how?
24. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: FUNDS RAISED IN THESE CAMPAIGNS COULD BE PUT TO
BETTER USE IN SMALLER AREAS, THAT WOULD HELP VOTER TURNOUT FOR EVERONE.
25. Alex Feldman: I would like to hear how the candidates propose increasing public transit use in our city and our region
26. Bob Sola: I own a home 5 blocks from the SugarHouse casino in Fishtown. My fiance owns a home 5 blocks from the Foxwoods. Will you support the 1500 foot buffer and how far will you go to protect us from the traffic, property crime, and problem gambling that the casinos will introduce into our neighborhoods. Will you fight Governor Rendell and make sure the casinos are re-sited?We were both born and bred in Philadelphia. We are both college graduates who work in the suburbs. We plan to move out of Philadelphia before the casinos are fully operational. What will you do to keep us, the city's natural resources, from leaving for the suburbs?
27. Michael Cunningham: Michael Nutter, please do not create another bureaucratic office to help businesses. More job opportunities are being made by small businesses then big businesses. Will the next Mayor help the small business with tax relief so that theses businesses can expand and provide more jobs?
28. Wendy Warren: Another from the chat room: "How do these men hope to help the economy in this city? We are talking about taxes right now but look at the housing market, the mortgage industry and the recent employment rates. Any plans to combat this? "
29. Thomas McKernana: What about the 10 year tax abatement? Do we still need it?
30. ray baldasari: Please delete my questions...thank you
31. Wendy Warren: This is from a viewer: hope Nutter can shed light on how he is a different sort of democrat compared to the one's past. He says it's time for a change, but as councilman, he has been part of the machine for some time.
32. ray baldasari: In addition it is truly allabout money, but instead of taxes ,real enforcement is the answer as well as a sacred cow....refer to prior question..The city can save itself....enforce traffic tickets and collect of impound...the same with code violations etc....forget the "racw issue" it is a transparent excuse for business as usual!
33. Rorie Leahy: As an education student at Temple University, I am curious as to how you each plan on keeping and/or attracting teachers to the Philadelphia school district.
34. john smith: Mr .Nutter as a past concilman you have said you don't do pay for play but record show you have vote for bills to be past that help the peole that gave you money and you also past thing that Mayor John Street ask for when you can out in your ads agains him . Can you explain why?
35. bob seger 2: hi
36. Erik Solivan: what are your thoughts on how to reach out to, and support the economic development of, the Latino community which represents about 11% of city's population?
37. Rorie Leahy: As a Temple University student majoring in education, what are you going to do, as mayor, to attract me to the Philadelphia school district?
38. ray baldasari: corruption is totally rampant in the city do you have the courage to confront the people that run the parties?
39. phunraiser: What is either candidates plan to deal with the blight of homelessness on the streets of Philadelphia.
40. Steve Camperthall: What will the Next Mayor do about illegal houses of prostitution in the city of Philadelphia and the undiscussed 'sex trade' industry that flouishes in center city especially around the convention center? meaning the 'massage parlors'?
41. TRACY wARLOW 2: Cleaning Philadelphia is a priority of Mr Nutter, will either canidate enforce the goals of the Good Neighbor publication, maintainenance and repair of properties by homeowners/renters, and an additional regulation outlining the repair procedures for common driveways which the city states is obsolete although the regulation is still on License & Inspections website. Also enforcing sanitation violations in a timely. There is debri piled in the back of a corner property on my block that I have given to L&I and the sanitation over 1 week ago, it is still there and getting higher. These are the beginning stages of neighborhood blight.
42. Damon Williams: For both: What will be the process of selecting the next police commissioner?
43. david watkins: that is traffic congestion
44. david watkins: For both: Any ideas for alleviating center city congestion?
45. nick bernardini: relating to the health of our children, what would the next mayor do to ensure that healthy food programs are implimented in the school districts, and can they in turn reclaim controll over the schools from the state? if so how would they go about doing this?
46. Wendy Warren: Would ANY person on parole sign a waiver allowing them to be stopped and frisked at will?
47. ron emrich: Philadelphia is America's most historic city. Heritage tourism and the actual preservation of existing historic bldgs. with their embodied energy and long life cycles are sustainable, "green" economic development activities we should pursue more vigorously. What will you do to expand support for the Philadelphia Historical Commission, and to integrate it and historic preservation more effectively into comprehensive and neighborhood-based planning and zoning efforts?
48. Susan Badeau: For both candidates - What strategies and approaches to you envision to tackle Philadelphia's serious high school drop out crisis?
49. Jeff Bundy: According to Travel & Leisure magazine, Philadelphians are the ugliest (and perhaps the fattest) people in the U.S. Can the mayor do anything to improve the health of our citizens?
50. Linda Watson: In addition, I think that gaining trust of police by those in the "hood" is very important. What will be done to re-gain trust?
51. John Edwards: What are your plans to take back and resturcture the the failing school disctrict?
52. Susan Badeau: Recently, the future and funding for the successful Youth Violence Prevention Funding was at great risk for being cut. Are you familiar with this program, and what is your stance on funding it so that it can not only continue in the areas where it exists but expand it to other high-need areas as well?
53. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: IN REFERENCE TO THE RETAINING WALL IF A FIRE OCCURS IN THE FRONT WE ARE TRAPPED NO ESCSAPE ROUTE. A CHILD RUNS DOWN THE WALK WAY AN FALLS YOU PEOPLE WILL BEAR THE END OF A LARGE LAW SUITE.
54. ed cunningham: at some point, payments to the city workforce, particularly into health care and retirement funds, will have a major impact on the city's finances. At the same time, everyone agrees the city is overtaxed. How do you plan to meet these seemingly contradictory problems?
55. Damon Williams: For Taubenberger and Nutter: is hiring more cops really the answer? Or should we focus more on education, employment opportunities and other means to reduce crime?
56. Susan Badeau: For both candidates: You both participated in several events involving youth during the spring, including those sponsored by the Children's Commission. If elected, what strategies do you have to ensure that you are able to continue to hear the voices of youth and parents and incorporate their concerns, policy ideas and recommendations into your administration?
57. Kevin S: Philadelphia. How will you as Mayor ensure they will be protected?
58. Kevin S: With 10k men preparing to patrol the high crimes areas of
59. Wendy Warren: Do you believe the unions are willing to concede on their contracts?
60. Tom Pathman: Why doesn't the city of Philadelphia have an open primary?
61. VICTORIA EBO-TYLER 2: YOU SEEM TO HAVE MONEY FOR THE AVENUE OF THE ARTS, WHY NOT THE SMALLER AREAS, THAT NEED FUNDING?
62. Paul Marotta: I would like to hear from both candidates about their vision of the expanion o fthe Avenue of the Arts-South Broad Street, and the economic anc cultural impact of the arts in the region
63. Tom Pathman: Why doesn'
64. Damon Williams: For Nutter: This city has had democratic leadership for decades, and that status-quo seems to not have changed much. You ran on a platform that distanced yourself from Street's records, but how do you convince voters that the democratic machine will be run differently, should you become mayor?
65. Paul Marotta: Gentlemen, what are your thoughts on the value of the arts to the city and the region, culturally and economically, as well as the continued expansion of South Broad and the Avenue of the Arts
