Yo, Mike. Did we hear you dissing on Rocky?
Yup, in a speech about Philadelphia's identity at the Franklin Institute last night, Nutter said the city needs to get over the iconic Sly Stallone film Rocky, about the south Philly boxer with a dream.
Say what?
"We are entering the post-Rocky era in Philadelphia," the mayor-elect said. "I think it's an identity that doesn't serve us well."
Nutter -- who did say he enjoys the movie -- continued: The movie had a Cinderella quality about it. If you had no skills somehow you could be great."
He went on to say "We need to stop celebrating low skills and start working on an identity where smart is cool and going to college is the norm."

I didn't want to say anything Wendy because right away it would have been taking I was picking on Michael.
In my opinion. I didn't think it was nice for Michael to put Sly Stallone or a person with minor skills into such a low motion of gravity and praise a person without sins and a degree.
What's wrong with starting from the bottom with a dream.
Michael each situation in life is different for each individual. Weren't you ever taught that.

Screw Rocky. Fourth rate movie, crappy statue. This is what people identify the city with?
Posted by MichaelZ | November 14, 2007 1:46 PM
It's about time someone said this!!!!!!!!! Please we pay homage to a movie character. I agree with Nutter get off the entire Rocky thing. Yes we all love the first Rocky but it was just a movie. If you want to put up a statue of a Boxer how about Smokin Joe?!?!?!?! At least he is a real boxer and really from Philly. Good Job Nutter!!!!!!!
Posted by Joe M | November 14, 2007 2:29 PM
Rocky, the movie, stands for the little guy that everyone counted out. Its an inspirational film. The statue is physical evidence of this. Graduating college is a dream that many share...bad example, Mr. Nutter.

No doubt we have to hold ourselves in higher esteem as a first-rate city with first-rate ability. We have more than a "puncher's chance" at success but Rocky represents hard work sans flash; true substance. We identify with that.

It's about time someone said that Philadelphians need to be more educated and cultured! This city needs to wake up and stop living in the past.
If people in Philadelphia have enough money for cigarettes and alcohol, they have enough money for education and culture!
Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2007 6:49 PM
Tourist love that statue. They get their picture taken with Rocky and then walk away from one of the best art museums in the world.
Posted by perry | November 14, 2007 7:17 PM
The statue can stay (the folks who ignore the museum probably wouldn't be there at all if it weren't for the statue). The 'tude, on the other hand, needs to go if this city's going to make much progress, since there are only so many low/unskilled jobs we can realistically expect to create. Props to Nutter for pointing that out.

The Mayor was correct. I would rather people rely on reality than on mythical nonsense. There is nothing wrong with working from the bottom to the top. The mayor was not saying that one shouldn't do that. What is wrong with our society, he was pointing out, is that too many people feel that there is no need to uplift themselves from the bottom because of social myths. We are not aiming high and the education numbers and personal success rates do not lie. This becomes doubly troubling when a person from a broken family structure buys into such myths. It is very hard these days to instill a value of moving up the ladder with education and skills because of the competition for the hearts and minds of the youths. All of the so-called markers of social and moral authority, some parents in particular, seem to be failing this battle. If the mayor wants to chip away at this attitude, and thus, tip the battle in our favor, I will support my mayor. The crime that we are facing today is directly linked to under-achievement. We cannot get so accustomed to our involuntary twitches to protect our rights to free thought and speech without thinking of the consequences. We cannot claim that we want change while fighting to hang on to the past. We are lucky to have this mayor. Even the candidates seeking the nomination of their parties do not speak on the issues important to Philadelphia, but we have Mr. Nutter right here sacrificing for us. The mayor is correct. Keep leading the way Mr. Nutter.
Posted by Kurt Eric Munroe | November 15, 2007 12:18 AM
I caution Nutter, with respect, to not dis' Rocky in Philly. Nutter's point is certainly valid, this will be the mayor that drags us kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
What he has to say instead is that today's Rocky toughs it out, takes the punches, and stands up in college. He graduated high school. He woos the girl with good manners (which Rocky did, eventually). Rocky had to learn the hard way how to figure it out, Nutter has to say, so learn from Rocky. Then he can pump up education.
Rocky had to be Rocky then because Philly was Philly then. We're a new Philly now.
But for the sake of yourself, don't dis' ROCKY, or the whole city and its nutty tourists will have a cow.

Do my relatives who visit want to go to the Kimmel? Some. Opera? Theater? Some. The Mann? Maybe. Walk around Rittenhouse, go shop on Walnut?
No, my dizzy relatives want to go see all the sites that I know where in all the Rocky movies. They run up the Art Museum steps OVER and OVER again, and over and over again, say "WOOOOOOO! Gonna FlY now! Dahdahhhh!" Then the take pictures of themselves with the Parkway behind them. If it's overcast, they say "Wow, it's just like the movie!"
I hawe to take them to Rocky's boading house on 18th St., to Geno's, to the riverfront where it is gritty (I try to drag them into Ikea at that point). They LOVE old South Philly. If I take them through the nice areas, you can see the vague disappointment).
They want to see row houses with painted on house numbers or stainless steel window frame covers, corrugated like a food cart. They want to see boys on the corners. They want to stop. I'm like, no, no, we can't stop here folks.
Rocky has to make another movie. He goes into politics, and he cleans up the city he loves.
Nutter has to say, I am that Rocky sequel!
Posted by Anonymous | November 15, 2007 2:51 AM
Street would give visitors replicas of the Liberty Bell. Dinky little pot metal replicas on a plastic base, and they had to be all like, OH, just what I've DREAMED OF.
Seriously, we need to give official visitors a boxed set of the Rocky movies. They will get weepy.
Then Nutter can show what a mencsh he is by saying, "like Rocky, you're gonna fly now."
I mean everyone gets a boxed set. Bono. Gere. Paris. Visiting Catholic dignitaries. Ambassadors from foreign nations. Leaders of groups and associations who bring conventions here.
Cheesy? Did you note what we put on our steaks? Cheese is big business. People love a tasty little snack. Seriously, what Rocky movies have done for this town would take an MBA to tally.
Posted by Anonymous | November 15, 2007 3:04 AM
There really are any number of people running up the Art Museum steps screaming "GONNA FLY NOW!" on any given day.
Posted by Anonymous | November 15, 2007 3:06 AM
I drive by there and I see people at the top, both fists in the air, jumping around.
Posted by Anonymous | November 15, 2007 3:06 AM
Nutter, whoa, tread lightly. You're giddy from lack of rest. Rem'ber, Rocky is not a character in a set of movies. He's a real person. He really lived here. People really believe he is a friend, a relative, a male role model. Rocky is not fiction in Philly.

Welcome to the 21st century, Philadelphia - where education, marketable skills, and hard work are critical for advancement and survival.
We must set higher standards and have higher expectations. I applaud Mayor-Elect Nutter for telling it like it is - what a breath of fresh air!
Philadelphia is moving up and on, whether the lowest common denominators of our city like it or not. We will no longer cater to the lazy, stupid, and ignorant.
Posted by Anonymous | November 15, 2007 5:48 AM
Michael Nutter has a valid point. Young people today are corrupted by a culture of stupidity that values money and belongings over education and self worth. I love Rockey but its time to let go.

Hey, funny he would try to promote going to college. I attended St. Joes when he was a councilman. Frequently he unjustly went after students to remain popular with the voters. The residents didnt like the lack of parking when school was in session, he goes after the students and tries to get them evicted from their homes and apartments. I guess he didnt seem to realize SJU and the economic benefits the students bring are a catalyst for keeping that area of the city in good shape. Obviously neighbors are always going to be unhappy with students living in near them, its the nature of college, but when the neighborhood is on the fringe of some bad areas, having a college around is a big help. Way to ignore the big picture and take the cheap route for votes.

I agree with Mr. Nutter. I have wanted someone to say this for years. Sorry people get over your love for a fictional story. Yes, it's inspirational but so are a million other stories. We're the only city outside of Hollywood, where everything is fake, to erect statues of fictional characters. How stupid do we look? We do need to get over the gritty, working class mentality that envelopes this city. We have some of the best colleges and universities here, including the Wharton School, yet we try to be some kind of rust belt city of beer swilling, uneducated, corner bar loving football meatheads. How about we try to be one of the most educated and intelligent cities in the world. What's wrong with that? We make ourselves look like bloated, ignorant fools for heaping so much praise upon someone with little to no acting skills like Sylvester Stallone. It's actually embarrassing and I'm glad that someone (THANK YOU MR. NUTTER) finally had the balls to say it. It is time to get over Rocky.
If I were mayor, I'd ban the playing of any of the lousy music from that film in this city. Enough is enough. Life is not a movie. The only way to overcome adversity is to get an education, get a degree, work hard, and use your brain.
Posted by Dave | November 15, 2007 9:22 AM
Good riddance Rocky (and Sly), we're moving on up!
Posted by Sherman | November 15, 2007 9:28 AM
Really? No seriously, really? You guys care if they took down that statue.
Sly Stallone started his career in a Porn film called "The Party at Kitty and Stud's." You know what his fictional name in that was kids? That's right, "The Italian Stallion." Way to go Philadelphia! Let's promote a movie about an uneducated guy who gets to the top and makes millions (in the subsequent crappy movies) by beating the crap out of people. Kids, screw school, violence = rise to glory. That's a great message for this city right now.
No wonder we're constantly berated and called fat, ugly, uneducated, and violent.
Posted by Joe | November 15, 2007 9:28 AM
I have no problem with Nutter saying anything about the Post-Rocky era, and I hope he's right! This chip-on-our-shoulder underdog attitude is getting us where? 400 murders a year, not to mention what's unreported (a drag queen run over by an SUV four times is an accident?!), six cops shot in seven weeks, and a reputation as the worst sports fans in America?
This is Philadelphia! We have excellent museums, a gigantic park system, bike-friendly roads, American history coming out of our ears, and a central location in proximity to other major cities on the East coast. Enough with the underdog attitude! As a guy from Detroit, believe me: this is a great city!
So I agree. Enough with the glorification of this fiction. We have enough reality to make us proud.
Posted by Matt | November 15, 2007 9:32 AM
I have a news flash for you people. Rocky is not a real person. If he was, he would fit nicely in Philadelphia, where no one cares about being educated. People only care about being tough and intimidating.
Michael Nutter is right in saying that we need to turn this city around. We must stop using a fictional character as an ambassador and role model for this city.
By the way, he said nothing about getting rid of the statue. If Rocky or you people could read, you would've figured that out.
Posted by Citizen KAne | November 15, 2007 9:33 AM
Think about it people... How did Rocky end? He lost the fight!! Yes he did more then what was expected of him, but in the end he came up short. I hate when our sports teams embrace that Rocky theme and play it during the games. What are they hoping for, that we make a decent fight of it, but lose in the end?
STOP EMBRACING A LOSER!
Posted by Doug | November 15, 2007 9:33 AM
we're such losers we have to venerate a fictional character. that's philly!
Posted by rob | November 15, 2007 9:50 AM
Rocky is often considered the greatest athlete in Philadelphia history. It drives me nuts! He is not real. Why is there a statue of him and why is he in any sports conversations?
I agree with Michael Nutter. It is time to get past Rocky and move on.
Posted by Anonymous | November 15, 2007 10:17 AM
Nutter hit the nail on the head and I applaud him for standing up to the stupidity and ignorance in Philadelphia!
It's time for Philadelphians to get an education and some real skills. Anyone who believes otherwise is part of the problem.

I am in total agreement with Mayor Elect Nutter.
The "Rocky Identity" is one of the biggest jokes & insults that I
hear about our city everytime I visit: Chicago, NYC, Boston, etc...
Many people ouside the Philadelphia region view Philadelphian's as "lazy, losers, cry babies, fat, dirty, stupid, killers" the list goes on... If we want other cities, regions or even countries to view Philadelphia as a "world-class" city we need to start behaving in a manner that demands respect! No one wants to hear that Philly is "blue-collar town, and or a city of nitty-gritty character".
Wake up, Philly!!!

Kudos to Michael Nutter for being brave and honest enough to make this statement. No one is "dissing" Rocky here. I'm sure everyone agrees it is an inspiring film and that he is a great character. However, that movie should not define Philadelphia. It shouldn't be the thing that unifies Philadelphian's hopes and dreams. The city has a 300+ year history. For much of that time, it was a refined, cultural and political capital. It represented the best of what the US had to offer the world. It was a showpiece city to be proud of. Rocky symbolizes a relatively short period in the city's history when it had lost it's way and become the gritty city that it was never meant to be. If we want to return to greatness, if we want to be the "next great city", we have to stop feeling like the rough-around-the-edges, uneducated, unrefined underdog that Rocky represents. We have to find a new idea to rally around, a new symbol of civic pride. Michael Nutter loves this city in a way that few mayors ever have. He is an intelligent, competent leader who will pull this city kicking and screaming into the 21st century. If you aren't willing to make some needed changes that might be difficult , that might push you a little bit out of your comfort zone, that might require you to sacrifice your love of a movie character for the common good -- then you are part of the problem, not the solution.

Philadelphia needs to get it's head out of it ass! Philly always refers to the past "ROCKY" because it is too afraid to look into the future and or lacks vision. We are commonly refered as "KILLadelphia" and or "FILTHadelphia". Philly is a city of losers, even look at their professional sports teams, politicians, educational system, taxes,
lack of water front development, the list goes on for miles......

Kurt Eric Munroe, in his posting on 11/15/2007 at 12:18am, has come closer than anyone else has in a very long time to explaining the root causes of crime in general, but particularly violent crime, when he says "The crime that we are facing today is directly linked to under-achievement". However, there is a pre-cursor to underachievement which could be a warning sign of future criminal behavior: seriously fractured families. Perhaps the most recent example in Philly of this, literally within the last 24 hours, is the case of Donyea Phillips, the 16-year-old who has not attended school so far during the current school year, who left his father's house and was occupying as a squatter a dilapidated house in Frankford, was allegedly selling illegal drugs out of this house, and allegedly shot two police officers yesterday who had come to serve a warrant at this house. Fixing seriously fractured families will go a long way towards preventing crime in general, but particularly violent crime.

Post-Rocky? 21st century Philly? Rocky a LOSER?
Perhaps we here in Philly are sounding a little too big for our britches?
Sure, Philly has been the historical landmark of the Country. But Rocky & cheesesteaks are what put Philly on the map, and are what most people look for when they come here.
Rocky was only a loser if he had given up. Rocky may have lost a fight or two in his life, but he never ever gave up.

YO Nutter you dont know wat your are talking about.. I am living over Seas and the thing I am asked about most is all thestuff that is in the "Rocky Movies" You should make him the city mascot not the "Bell" People want to run the Parkway and the steps jump up and down a million times.. You owe Philly people a big "Im sorry"
Because Rocky represents the little man.. You know the people who built Philly. He just uses teh boxer as the Representation... I think your just jealous because if you ran against Rocky you would of lost.. Good luck, now clean this place up before it turns into another Detroit...

I am so angry and sad that the leader of one of the best citys on earth has the narrow mindeness and myopic fields of vision. Not to mention the high browed people who think they are above the heart and soul of what now has become a symbol and bench mark for goodness and hope.Rocky is so much more than just a movie. It's well past Stallones acting, which in this movie happens to be outstanding. I have spent so much time at the steps, talking to people about why they are there. Let me tell you all something. Over the last 2 years I have meet thousands of people from every part of the planet. Not to mention Philadelphians. I ask them why they run the steps to "Rocky" and here is the responses;"I just beat cancer and through my chemo treatments I watched Rocky,it kept me going" or "I just got married, and can't think of anywhere better to celebrate" or "I was addicted to drugs, homeless, and walking near the steps I remebered the Rocky movies and how they inspired me to clarity".
A really smart Mayor would find the way to merge progress with old school ideas like Rocky. Not pass it off and say we need to "get over it". this is completely unacceptable.
What type of a fool thinks that the world sees philly as a low-brow, mumbling-corner bar unsophisticated city based on a movie? you must have serious baggage.
Thousands of people pull themselves up, on their own, work hard to go to school, create a safe and loving home for their familes, and a diversified culture that accepts all religions and races. Rich or poor, we all want to be given an honest shot to succeed. If we fail, we want to fail on our terms and not be told what we are capable of. We all want to strive to be the best that we can. This is what Rocky represents. the best part of who we CAN be. that may be higher education or a better husband or beating cancer, or that job promotion we worked so hard to get. I am all for progress. but I see everyday the hope and brightness this simple character brings to people. What is wrong with being included with such an iconic film? Embrase it! This is the ONLY city on earth that has Rocky.
Why not put up a staue of smokin' joe? I don't know. he inspred many as well. Maybe Rocky was more relatable.
As far as not having skills in life, I always felt life was about hanging in there and keep pushing past obstacle that get in your way. why would you not want to share that Rocky attitude? It's not about having a wide range of vocabulary or going to fancy museums. It's about never giving up.
Mr. Mayor, please find away to blend these two ideas to further inspire new generations of Philadelphians. Think about this, it's the simple things in life , like HOPE that keep us going. How dare you undermine what Rocky has meant to the city...to its people. On any given week day, get out of your office, head over to the steps and just stand there, watching. Tell me what you see. thousands of people at the Rocky statue. running the steps and "doing Rocky". I'm sure this will falkl on deaf ears, but its the prospect of hope that it won't.

Nutter. Nutter???? With a name like that what in God's name did you people expect.
I'm from the UK, but the ROCKY saga holds such a deep place in my heart that "I" feel connected with the great people of Philadelphia through this movie, than this suck up-no good cheap rate mayor seems to.
ROCKY is an icon. He practically put Philadelphia on the map, especially the stairs of the museum, I mean come-one.
ROCKY simply added fire to the great spark that is the city of Philadelphia, and deserves to have his permenant home there.
It is not a shrine, or an idol that is worshiped, merely something to aspire to.
NUTTER YOU ARE A FREAK. Going to college is something every parent wants for his child. I myself graduated with honours not so long ago, but guess what, the ROCKY saga helped me through it.
It was a tough road, the determination by ROCKY to "go the distance" at the very least, kept me going when I thought it was all too much.
Yes ROCKY was never educationally gifted. So what? Is the entire city of Philadelphia made up of doctors and lawyers? What about the fish seller, the butcher, the cab driver the car mechanic.
SO all these people are people with no skills NUTTER???? Are they not great in their own unique way?????? I know your not.
ROCKY was gifted. He had the determination, and the will to overcome any drawbacks he may have had in life to succumb to something.
Many people with the "skills" you speak of, lack this vital strength of the human spirit.
ROCKY ignites this in all of us.
Think about it you NUTcase.
Rockstone.

Shame on you pompous folks. I know Sly and he could buy each one of you and he an't got a degree. You guys would really have a field day with a guy who a large part of the human race worships.
Not all of us need to have a degree. Like Edison said he had many degrees they were all in his employ.
Rocky is symbolic of human struggle and never giving up your quest for you own dreams. Do you allow the city to display lights and decorated trees for the holidays?
Nutter fits the mayor very well. He should get a nutter vocation. Your city represents independence. So celebrate Rocky and the story and be glad that Sly choose your city to be the foundation for his story. Stop raining on your own parade.....

I had the chance to meet Vice-President Elect Joe Biden last night at the Eagles-Giants game. I informed Senator Biden about Mr. Nutter's comments on the "post-Rocky" era of Philadephia. He said that guy better tread lightly because it sounds like he has totally missed the point of Rocky - because the message is timeless.
And he said, for God's sake, Rocky is one of the GREAT things about the city of Philadelphia - it creates jobs from tourism and is and always has been a major player in Philadelphia economy.
Now in my personal opinion, Mr. Nutter would be better off being thankful for all the character has given to the city and maybe rethink his statement. I can tell he had the right intentions but putting down Philadephia's relationship with Rocky is shameful.
You're a good man Mr. Nutter but you went about this the wrong way.
