September 21, 2006What's going down, Mr. Nutter? My cheeks on this bar stool. It's unusual to get your candidate news from the gossip columnist, but in Dan Gross's column today, we find this item: Hope it's not too smoky in there The Grey Lodge (6235 Frankford) in the Northeast is hosting barstool meetings with all mayoral candidates once they declare. First up: former councilman Michael Nutter, the only declared candidate, who'll be there from 7 to 9 Monday night. If turnout exceeds the bar's capacity, preference will be given to registered Philly voters, the bar says. No word on whether Gervase Peterson or Erin Elmore will be there. Hopefully Nutter will have a couple of drinks - maybe he'll be more interesting. He's so bland. Blah blah blah Posted by: Polly at September 22, 2006 09:18 AMPolly, maybe you should be voting for Last Comic Standing on NBC's website instead of in the mayoral election. Posted by: Dave at September 22, 2006 09:29 AMThanks Dave, do you know where I can get tickets? Nutter still lacks P - personality. And he should try to appeal to people like me instead of talk down to me like I'm an idiot. It doesn't make me want to vote for him... Posted by: Polly at September 22, 2006 01:38 PMPolly - have a good weekend. You can start your posting for your job working for some other mayoral candidate on Monday. If I had to guess, you sound like a Saidel staffer. Posted by: Philly Phantom at September 22, 2006 02:53 PMthanks..I'm know staffer (I'm actually a lawyer who doesn't even know Saidel) but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know you LOOOVE Nutter Posted by: Polly at September 22, 2006 09:36 PMYes, I do love him. He'd make a great mayor. You must be supporting somebody else, because one of the myths that get's propagated about him is that he's "boring". I'm not bored by ethics, integrity, good government, that kind of stuff. Who are you supporting for Mayor? Posted by: Philly Phantom at September 23, 2006 09:11 AMI actually am not "supporting" anyone. Is that so hard to believe? The reason people think Nutter is boring, is because he is! If enough people believe it, than maybe it's true and it's not a myth. The problem is that you are not objective. I get no sense of truth from you because you are a walking Nutter advertisement. Now maybe there is nothing wrong with that, but for the public out here who would honestly like to learn something, good and bad, about our future mayor, are unable to do so because you are propogating. If I wanted to hear Nutter-love, than I'd go to his website. I want objective views, not your biases. Hi All, The comments section of this blog is intended to be exactly where people can express their biases and, if they care to, provide reasons for those biases - either for or against. The Next Mayor project, thenextmayor.com and The Next Mayor blog will continue to gather reports about candidates and issues from all different sources and do original reporting, radio and television packages about those issues and candidates. The posters on this blog, (ie Wendy and Me), may have our own opinions about who would make the best mayor but we won't be sharing them here. I'll continue to point out when I think a candidate says the right thing or wrong thing, when he or she says something factual or not, and when he or she addresses an issue that we've brought up before, but I'll leave the pointing out of their past records to their supporters who choose to comment here. Posted by: Dan at September 25, 2006 11:25 AMI can certainly understand your cynacism Polly, but sometimes, people are in politics for the right reasons and have done good things. I believe that Nutter is one of those people. And what am I propagating? You started this comment threat by proagating a myth that Nutter is "boring". And maybe - just to concede your point for the sake of argument - "boring" (if fighting for ethics and campaign reform, a more efficient and effective government, a reformed tax structure are boring) maybe exactly what we need. And, I think that I am objective. I've objectively come to the conclusion - over the years - that Mike Nutter is the real deal. I do suspect your a Saidel support, though. Posted by: Philly Phantom at September 25, 2006 12:25 PMI'm not sure that I'd consider Nutter any more or less interesting than the average politician. I actually don't usually think about that kind of thing when listening to a candidate, at least not unless it's been suggested to me beforehand. Having said that, and as I hinted at in my initial response, I don't think "stage presence" is a very good way to judge candidates for public office. Rep John Perzel is generally pretty interesting to listen to (what is it, tatoo artits make more money than he does or something?) but that doesn't necessarily make him an effective State Representative. Fattah was also pretty funny when that comedian interviewed him (I forget who -- John Stewart?), but I've been pretty unimpressed with him so far. Regardless of what you think of Nutter's personality, he can definitely point to some very real things he has accomplished while in public office, which is something most of the other candidates haven't really done so far (maybe they'll start once they decide to declare their candidacy?)
