Final - Nationals 7, Phillies 6

There's life. Aaron Rowand and Michael Bourn have put together back-to-back singles. Chris Coste is pinch-hitting.

Bourn steals second.

Coste grounds out. Rowand scores, Bourn to third. It's up to Carlos Ruiz.

Ruiz walked. Abraham Nunez is up.

Nunez grounds out to second. So much for that 5-2, seventh-inning lead. Remember this one when the Phils lose the wild-card by one game.

I don't want to hear how they've won 5 out of the last 6 now. They absolutely should have won today. You cannot make up ground on the Mets when you lose every time they lose. We wasted away April and most of May. Now we need to be winning more than just 5 in a row. The season is slipping away. You need to beat the last place teams when you play them!

Once again I ask myselfL Why do I care? It happens over and over and over again with this team. They are baseball's version of Groundhog Day ... play great ball for a few games, make you think they maybe, just maybe, could be a contender. Then they revert to form, coughing up a three-run lead late, leaving men on base all day, booting the ball in key spots, blundering managerial moves ... same story, different day eh?

As for the wild card, there is a better chance of Lindsey Lohan staying sober.

LB:

And I don't want to have to worry about the wild card! The division has been there for the taking. The Mets stink this year. They are very beatable. The Braves are not what they used to be. All it takes is some smart error free baseball, good managerial moves, and just decent pitching. It's really not asking too much. Why is it so difficult???

John Q:

Great blog, thanks, as mentioned this is great for working people, like having your buddy describe the game.

Andrew:

Chris, you have a football mentality. Stop getting so down with the losses and high with the wins. Look at series rather than games. Yes, this was a game that should have been won, BUT, sweeps are rarities. The Nationals had won 42 games coming into today, and considering they're in last place, they beat better teams to get some of those wins. The Phils need to just look to win series. A game like this needs to be squelched with a win tomorrow to get the bad taste out.

You can keep asking yourself, "Why can't the Phillies contend?" Ask yourself that question after the trade deadline passes and Stand Pat Gillick does nothing to improve the pitching staff. Ask yourself that question when the Phillies make a rally the last 2 weeks of the season and end up missing the wildcard by 2.5 games. Ask yourself that question when they resign Charlie Manuel after "ownership" realizes they would have to put up big bucks for a real manager.

This team will be a perennial .468 team unless the team is either sold, or they start to care about winning. Although, I think all they really care about is making money, and they'll continue to do that as long as the team is "good enough" in their opinion to give Phillies fans that sense of false hope they we have had ever since we were born.

LB:

Yes. Thanks Ed. See you on DNL soon.

Take the mic away from Eskin.
Nice blog.. good addition to the MLB play by play and the XM broadcast (in CA). Another series win is good, but we gave that one away. Bronco had a chance to make good on the almost EXACT situation he was in last night, and unfortunately he failed. Silver bus to Ottawa, I'm sayin' (or Reading).
