« Final score: Nationals 11, Phillies 6 | Main | Where were you? »

Wrapping up

The Phillies, as it has been pointed out by those who wanted Romero to pitch the ninth, are off Tuesday and play the Nationals on Wednesday (7 p.m. start). Cole Hamels will take the mound against Washington's Tim Redding.

My three stars from today are Milledge, Johnson and Rollins. Gordon gets the obvious nod for goat of the day.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback.

Thank you Ed. Always Enjoy your blog from the game.

Ed M.:

Unlike what happened out on the field today, this blog was good stuff, Ed.

Eddie K:

Thans alot for the blog man! I am a diehard phils fan and I just moved into enemy territory(Atlanta). Between my boys calling me from the game and your blog, I felt as though I was there! Keep it up!

Chris:

The Phillies will score lots of runs, but they will not make even win their division with their pitching staff as currently constructed. Myers is streaky, Kendrick is no longer an unknown commodity to hitters, and Adam Eaton is the biggest bum in the major leagues. Hamels is super talented but brittle and tempermental, and Jamie Moyer cannot defy age and logic much longer. With the exception of J.C. Romero, the bullpen is a shambles. A healthy Lidge would help, but there remain too many holes on the staff for he alone to make a significant difference. Gillick knew last year that the Phillies were two legitimate pitchers away from being contenders for the world championship, but he didn't get anyone of note. All he managed to obtain (on the cheap, of course) is an over-the-hill Kris Benson who will probably never recover from his acute Tommy John surgery, and another damaged goods project in Brad Lidge. Same old Phillies----promises, promises. If they don't average ten runs per game, they won't even win their division. Thanks for nothing, Mr. Gillick.

Max:

How do you give Rollins the star of the game for the Phillies? He made a very costly error and offered a TERRIBLE relay throw to home plate. Yes, he hit a clutch HR, but as a SS that's not his job- he'd be better off with solid defense. If ANYONE from the Phillies deserved a star today, it was Charlie Manuel, who made the textbook moves required by a fast-paced game. Rollins had a negligent effect on the game.
