Phillies-Red Sox, lineups

Terry Francona has given Manny Ramirez a well-deserved day off. Here's the Red Sox lineup:

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, lf; 2. Dustin Pedroia, 2b; 3. J.D. Drew, rf; 4. Mike Lowell, 3b; 5. Sean Casey, 1b; 6. Jason Varitek, c; 7. Coco Crisp, cf; 8. Julio Lugo, ss; 9. Justin Masterson, rhp.

Only change for the Phils is lefthanded-hitting Greg Dobbs starting in place of Pedro Feliz at third. Their starting nine:

1. Jimmy Rollins, ss; 2.Shane Victorino, cf; 3. Chase Utley, 2b; 4. Ryan Howard, 1b; 5. Pat Burrell, lf; 6. Geoff Jenkins, rf; 7. Greg Dobbs, 3b; 8. Carlos Ruiz, c; 9. Kyle Kendrick, rhp.

Vegas has put the over/under at 10. An average of 11.1 runs have been scored in the first nine day games Citizens Bank Park this year. Considering the relative youth of the starters, this game looks like an overs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Posted at 10 a.m. --

The Red Sox fans should be extra smug today given the way the Celtics simply dismantled the Lakers last night. Thank heavens for David Tyree or else our friends from the Boston Ha-ba could boast to having the champs from baseball, hoops and football.

Hey, at least the Mets are reeling.

Should be a dry one for today's BPS. Check back around Noon for the starting lineups. Kyle Kendrick is pitching for the Phils; Justin Masterson is going for Boston. Neither has faced the opposing team.

Masterson is just the third Bosox rookie since 1956 to pitch at least six innings in his first five starts. Daisuke Matsuzaka (2007) and Dave Morehead (1963) were the others. Dice-K's on my fantasy team, but I never heard of Morehead, who went 40-64 in his eight-year career.

While we await the 1:05 first pitch, let's take a quick glimpse into the history books.

Babe Ruth's World Series debut came in Game 1 in 1915 when he grounded out to first base in the ninth inning. It was Ruth's only appearance of the series as the Red Sox beat the Phillies in 5. Oh, and the attendance for that fifth game at the Baker Bowl was 20,306. Today's crowd will be more than twice that number.

Feel free to post any other Red Sox-Phillies memories or tidbits. See you in a bit.

-- Ed B.

Top of the first, 4-0 Red Sox

The Phils are celebrating the 60th anniversary of legendary righthander Robin Roberts' major- league debut on June 18, 1948. Roberts, who threw 305 complete games, threw out the first pitch to Cole Hamels and probably wanted to finish the game.

Jacoby Ellsbury starts it off with a single to right. The Bosox stole six bases in seven tried last night and probably will be looking to run early.

Ellsbury stays put as Dustin Pedroia follows up with a single to right. Phils starter Kyle Kendrick has his first flaming bag.

J.D. Drew hits his 13th homer of the season as the Bosox jump out early. Mike Lowell hits one deep into the leftfield seats. It's the ninth time the Sox have gone back-to-back, most times in the majors. Hope you had the overs.

And on pitch No.21, Kendrick gets his first out of the game -- a soft grounder to second off the bat of Sean Casey. The CBP crowd gives a derisive cheer. The Bosox go quietly from there.

Bottom of the first, 4-1 Red Sox

A little trivia to start. Coco Crisp's first name is:

a. Charles. b.Covelli. c. Chocula.

Answer at the end of the inning.

Chase Utley hits a hard grounder to second to advance Shane Victorino who had walked. Utley is now hitless in his last 17 ABs.

Ryan Howard with an RBI single.

Burrell pops out to Covelli Loyce Crisp, a.k.a. Coco, to end it. How's that for synchronicity?

Top of the second, Red Sox 4-1

Kendrick strikes out the side, including Ellsbury looking. That's six in a row for Kendrick.

Mid-inning rant

Saw where the Yankees are miffed that Chien-Ming Wang was injured running the bases and that the Red Sox put Bartolo Colon was put on the DL after injuring his back swinging. OK, so AL pitchers don't normally bat, so they shouldn't expect to look like Tony Gwynn when they get in the box. But, they are baseball players.

It's not like taking an auto mechanic and asking him to do brain surgery. Sorry, just had to vent.

Can you imagine the Sixers saying "Reggie Evans can't shoot free throws, so Andre Miller should shoot them whenever he gets fouled." Gimme a break.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Bottom of the 2nd, Red Sox 4-1

The Phillies have two on and one out, but Kendrick is up.

Kendrick pops up a bunt into a doubleplay. Bad baserunning by Greg Dobbs. So much for that rally.

Top of the 3rd, 6-1 Red Sox

Pedroia fouls one off his shin, but stays in and lines one to short. If he was a pitcher, he probably would have died.

J.D. Drew hits a ringing double off the base of the right-centerfield wall. The boos come cascading, but they really don't seem to affect Drew who is halfway to a cycle.

Chase Utley just tried to pull a fast one. First and second, one out and Casey hits a soft liner to second. Utley corrals it with his glove, but allows it to drop in front of him to try to get the doubleplay. No dice, though. The umps called it an infield fly. Good try though.

After a Varitek walk, Brandon Moss is called on to pinch-hit for Coco Crisp, who has got to be injured. Moss singles in two runs.

Kendrick is at 70 pitches and six earned runs. Clay Condrey is up and ready to come in.

Kendrick gets Masterson to strikeout. The Phils have the top of the order coming up.

Bottom of the third, 6-1 Red Sox

Moss stays in and will play left. Ellsbury moves to center. Wouldn't mind J-Roll taking a pitch or two here.

Rollins does take a couple pitches, but flies out to center. Victorino and Utley go quietly. Utley's slump is now 0-for-18, a career worst.

Top of the fourth, 7-1 Red Sox

Condrey in for Kendrick, who in three innings gave up six hits and six earned runs on 75 pitches. Oh, and he bunted into a doubleplay. That was a tough hour for the youngster.

Crisp left the game with a left hand injury. Good thing we got that trivia question out of the way in the first inning.

Drew singles in Pedroia, who had doubled. That'll make him three-quarters of the way to a cycle.
Condrey (corrected) holds the Bosox to one run. Even though it's just the fourth, the Phils need to start chipping away. Ryan Howard leads off.

Bottom of the fourth, 7-1 Red Sox

The Phils go quietly as Justin Masterson has given up just one hit through four innings as the Phils scoreless streak against the Bosox hits 15 innings. Masterson, making his sixth career start, is at 72 pitches.

The Phils are getting drubbed. Look out for a trivia question to liven (yawn) things up a bit.

Top of the fifth, 7-1 Red Sox

Charlie Manuel is one of five managers to win division titles in both the NL and the AL. See if you can name the other four. The answer will be posted in the bottom of the inning, if I haven't fallen asleep.

Top of the fifth, 7-1 Red Sox

Charlie Manuel is one of five managers to win division titles in both the NL and the AL. See if you can name the other four. The answer will be posted in the bottom of the inning, if I haven't fallen asleep.

Condrey sandwiches two strikeouts around a Lugo double as the Red Sox go scoreless.

Bottom of the fifth, Red Sox 7-2

Dobbs starts it off with a single to right, the Phils first hit since Ryan Howard's single in the first. Ruiz singles and now Jayson Werth is on to pinch hit with first and third.

Werth beats out a doubleplay allowing Dobbs to score. Rollins singles to left as the shortstop Lugo scrambles to cover second with Werth running. Good to see Manuel make something happening by sending Werth. Otherwise, it woulda been a doubleplay.

Victorino popped out and Utley grounded out on a nice play by Red Sox first baseman Sean Casey. They got one back. They shoulda/coulda had more. Chad Durbin coming on in relief.

Oh, and the other four managers to win division titles in both leagues are Tony Larussa, Lou Piniella, Joe Torre and Bobby Cox.

Top of the sixth, Red Sox 7-2

Drew with a one-out single to go 4-for-4 on the day. He's improved his average from .316 to .329. Comcast SportsNet's Leslie Gudel points out that Drew is now hitting .433 in June. Ugh.

Durbin gets out of the inning by fanning Jason Varitek looking. The Red Sox have yanked Masterson and will send Javier Lopez to the mound. Ryan Howard leads off; lefties are hitting .186 against the lefthanded Lopez.

Bottom of the sixth, 7-2 Red Sox

Masterson was yanked after five innings and 92 pitches. Lopez came in and set the Phils down quietly. Only nine more outs to bite into this lead -- a lead built without Manny, Papi and Youkilis not in the lineup, by the way.

Top of the seventh, 7-2 Red Sox

Rudy Seanez in to pitch for the Phils.

The Red Sox go three up, three down for just the second time all day. The highlight was Ryan Howard flashing a little leather on a sharp grounder from Brandon Moss.

Bottom of the seventh, Red Sox 7-4

Just figured out how this game could be worse. You could be stuck in the office covering for a colleague who is playing hookey to be down here.

Red Sox pitcher Lopez ended the inning with a strikeout, but is getting yanked before the start of this frame. Red Sox manager Francona made the Phillies pinch hit Eric Bruntlett for Dobbs and countered by bringing in righthander Craig Hansen. It's a good move, up five runs.

So it's Hansen vs. Bruntlett to start the inning.

Bruntlett starts with an infield single and a steal of second. Ruiz walks and a wild pitch sends 'em both to second and third with no out. Pedro Feliz is up with the top of the order to follow. The fans are buzzing for the first time all day.

Feliz two-run single chases Craig Hansen. Francona is calling on Manny Del Carmen, a righthander who is no relation to Playa Del Carmen, a damn fine resort town in Mexico.

Victorino with another harmless popup and Utley flied out. Still two on, but now two out.

Utley's hit the ball hard a few times, but still hasn't had a hit since Friday. Ryan Howard up to try to salvage the inning.

Howard strikes out. J.C. Romero coming in to pitch for the Phils and Feliz will stay in.

Top of the eighth, Red Sox 7-4

Romero gets Ellsbury looking before Pedroia laces a single to left. J.D. Drew will face a lefty for the first time today.

Romero gets Drew to ground one in front of the plate, Ruiz to Howard; first time all day he's not reached base.

After an intentional walk, Romero gets Casey to ground out to end it.

Bottom of the eighth, Red Sox 7-4

Stat of the game: The top six hitters in the Phillies lineup are 2-for-19 (corrected) with a pair of singles.

Pat Burrell leads off.

Make that 2-for-20 (corrected). Burrell flies out to left.

Make that 2-for-21 (corrected). Jenkins flies out to center.

Coste pinch-hitting. Traffic along Pattison Avenue beginning to build.

Coste strikes out. Brad Lidge, making his first appearance since Thursday the 12th, is coming in for the Phils, who have a day off tomorrow.

Top of the ninth, 7-4 Red Sox

A little technical glitch there prevented a more timely update on the top of the ninth.

Lidge set the Sox down in order and looked fine doing so with a pair of strikeouts.

Bottom of the ninth, Red Sox 7-4

The Phils go quietly in the ninth. Good thing they won't have to see closer Jonathan Papelbon again anytime soon.

Red Sox 7, Phillies 4 - Wrap

The game started at 1:05 and was basically over by 1:15 after Mike Lowell's homer made it 4-0. The Phils had a couple chances, but when Utley's not hitting, they're a different bunch. Kind of like Tiger with a leg-and-a-half -- except he wins.

Charlie Manuel said after the game that Utley would have been given a day off if the Phillies were playing tomorrow. Utley's 0-for-20 slump has dropped his average from .317 to .294. Manuel said correctly, though, that Utley did hit the ball well today.

The Daily News' three stars of the game: 1. J.D. Drew. 2. Dustin Pedroia. 3. Manny Delcarmen, who extinguished the Phils last threat by getting out of a two-on, no-out jam with Victorino, Utley and Howard making the outs.

The Phils will have a day off to lick their wounds before the AL West leading Angels come to town. RHP Adam Eaton (2-4, 4.57) will take the mound opposite RHP Ervin Santana (8-3, 3.40).

June 26, 2008

Countdown is on

The NBA draft is fast approaching. The Sixers have the No. 16 pick.

The Chicago Bulls have the top choice and must choose between hometown boy Derrick Rose, from Memphis, and Kansas State man-child Michael Beasley.

Draft trade

The Nets and the Bucks have swapped some players as the Nets received forwards Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons from Milwaukee for Nets forward Richard Jefferson.
Yi was the sixth overall pick of the Bucks last season. Jefferson averaged 17.4 a game over seven seasons with the Nets.

No surprise as Rose goes No. 1

The Chicago Bulls surprised no one as they took Memphis freshman point guard Derrick Rose with the first pick in the draft. Rose's stock soared with his spectacular play in the Final Four. He is a native of Chicago and is the first guard picked at No. 1 since the Sixers took Allen Iverson in 1996. Rose has that rare blend of quickness, speed and strength. He'll be one of the best point guards in the league in a couple of years...he's that good.

Although Beasely has shrunk, his stock hasn't

Listed at 6-10 during his freshman season at Kansas State, Michael Beasley measured only 6-7 recently. Doesn't matter, the Miami Heat still took the power forward with the second pick. Beasley averaged 26.2 points and 12.4 boards a game, second highest in the nation. Whether he will stay a teammate of Dwyane Wade or not is in question. Miami very well could trade Beasley before the night is over.

This O.J. is a killer on the court

With the third pick in the draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves took USC freshman O.J. Mayo. The 6-5 guard showed his versatility for the Trojans, leading them in scoring (20.7), assists (3.3) and steals (1.6). He is a capable outside shooter and very good at getting to the basket and scoring despite contact. Also, is very good at the defensive end.

Westbrook to Seattle

No, Eagles fans, Brian Westbrook hasn't been traded. The Seattle Sonics take UCLA guard Russell Westbrook with the fourth pick, teaming him with Kevin Durant. The question is will Westbrook be able to play the point. He played two seasons at UCLA, and certainly will improve. But will it be at the point? That's most likely where Seattle envisions him.

Memphis is singing with Love

After winning just 44 games the past two seasons COMBINED, the Grizzlies did themselves well by grabbing UCLA center Kevin Love with the fifth pick. Love is the third freshman among the top five picks, and follows teammate Russell Westbrook. Love does everything well and is a very physical player. To show how well he knows the game and how to play it, he didn't foul out of a game for the Bruins this season, despite scoring (17.5) and rebounding (10.6). My favorite player of the draft.bb

No news from the Sixers

Here at PCOM, nothing seems to be cooking with the Sixers. Well, if it is, they aren't telling the gathered media here. Stay tuned.

Italy invades New York

The Knicks made their fans gathered at the draft in New York very unhappy by drafting 6-8 forward Danilo Gallinari, from Italy. In some league over in Europe (the Italian A-1 league, actually), Gallinari averaged 17.5 a game. He's a typical European, with a good outside game and a high basketball IQ. Fun fact, new Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni played with Danilo's father in Italy.

Clippers get Gordon

Indiana's Eric Gordon, a 6-3 frosh, goes to the Clippers with the 7th pick. Gordon led the Big Ten in scoring (20.9) and was named the league's freshman of the year. Few had predicted Gordon to go this high. He certainly has the offensive game for the NBA. Probably will be a solid scorer (on a bad Clippers team) for a few years.

Yo, Joe, welcome to Milwaukee

West Virginia's Joe Alexander, considered by many to be the best athlete in the draft, goes to the Milwaukee Bucks with the 8th pick. He is an extremely hard worker and knows how to score, meaning he knows when to pull up, when to drive and how to draw contact. Was one of the best players in the nation during the NCAA Tournament.

Larry likes Augustine

New Bobcats coach Larry Brown (remember him?) selects Texas point guard D.J. Augustine. At 5-11, he is the only draftee who stand eye-to-eye with commish David Stern. He is unbelievably quick and, in college was able to create his own shot almost at will. Whether he'll be able to do that in the NBA is another question.

Nets land Brook Lopez

Stanford forward Brook Lopez (7-feet, 250 pounds) was selected by the Nets at No. 10. Paired with his twin brother Robin, Brook led the Cardinal to the Elite Eight, averaging 19.3 points and 8.2 rebounds. Very athletic and strong, able to pound his way to the basket, but also pull up, avoid the contact and drain the 12-footer. Slipped a little bit in the draft, as most had him going in the top five.

Bayless to Pacers

Jerryd Bayless became the fifth player from the Pac-10 and the sixth freshman to be chosen as the Indiana Pacers took the 6-3 guard. Bayless likely will join T.J. Ford, whom the Pacers will acquire in a trade, in the Indiana Backcourt. He is very quick can score (19.7, third in the Pac 10) and also is a very good defender.

Local kid goes 10th

Jason Thompson of Rider, and Lenape High School in Medford, N.J., was taken 12th by the Sacramento Kings. Thompson, who became the first senior taken in the draft, is a surprise choice as most had him going late in the first round. He is very athletic for his size (6-10, 250). He scores, rebounds and blocks shots. Averaged 23 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3 blocks in Old Spice Classice this season against North Carolina St., Penn State and Kansas State (and Michael Beasley).

Oden, Roy and Rush

No, it's not a law firm. The Portland Trail Blazers have taken Brandon Rush from Kansas. A smooth outside shooter with great height (6-10), he will give the Blazers not only another scorer, but is another great defender, like Oden and Roy. He sometimes plays a little soft, but that might be okay with the strength he'll have around him in Portland.

Sorry, Thompson went 12th.

Jason Thompson went 12th to the Kings, not 10th. Sorry.

Randolph and another Lopez go

The Warriors took LSU frosh Anthony Randolph and Phoenix took Robin Lopez with the 15th pick. The Sixers are on the clock. Prediction here is Donte Green of Syracuse.

wrong headline

Jason Thompson was taken 12th, not 10th as headline said.

Sixers take Speights

Syracuse 6-10 sophomore forward-center Marreese Speights is the Sixers first-round pick for 2008. He is very strong and very big (245), but at the same time very quick and athletic. Has a very long wing span, which he uses well on both ends of the floor. Was a reserve at Florida for their second national championship in 2007. Averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds.

Dileo on Speights

We think he is a perfect fit for our team, said Sixers' vice president Tony Dileo. "He's one of the better post-up players in this draft. He can score with his right or left. We need a post-up player and we think he's going to be that for us. We are a running team and he can get out and run. He was the highest rated person we had on the board when our pick came. We don't see him as a major impact this year, we hope next year he'll be able to get more playing time. We're hoping by next year he can play major minutes. Right now he's about an 18-foot shooter, but he's practicing and will become a three-point shooter. He averaged one rebound every three minutes, which was one of the best in college. He can run, not only offensively but defensively.

Speights, of course, from Florida

Speights is from Florida, in case there was confusion.

Hibbert, MdGee, Hickson

Georgetown's Roy Hibbert went to Toronto (though he'll probably be traded to Indy as part of the Jermaine O'Neal deal), while Washington took JaVale McGee of Nevada at 18 and Cleveland landed J.J. Hickson (North Carolina St.) at 19.
Larry Brown's Charlotte Bobcats are up next.

Brown like French

With the 20th pick the Bobcats and Larry Brown landed Alexis Ajinca, a 7-0, 220-pound center from France.

More on Speights

In 36 games for Florida last season, the 20-year old averaged 14.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.36 blocks. He shot 62.4 percent from the floor, which was the ninth-best in the nation. He collected 10 double-doubles and blocked two or more shots 16 times.

Anderson, Lee gone

Cal's Ryan Anderson went at 21 to the New Jersey Nets, while Western Kentucky guard Courtney Lee goes to the Orlando Magic at 22. Anderson, a 6-10 sophomore forward, led the Pac-10 in scoring at 21.1 a game. Lee is a 6-5 shooting guard who will join Jameer Nelson in the Magic backcourt.

Kosta Koufas to Utah

Kosta Koufas, yet another freshman, went to the Jazz at No. 23. Koufas was expected to go earlier. The 7-0, 265-pounder scored 14.4 points and grabbed 6.7 rebounds for Indiana this past season. He has a very good outside shooting touch.

Seattle at 24, Houston at 25

The Sonics grabbed 6-10 forward Serge Ibaka from Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.
Ibake. He played in Congo before going over to Europe, where he compted in Spain last season, averaging 11.3 points. Is a very good leaper, and his ability is described as raw, though he can shoot well while facing up against opponents.
At 25, Houston grabbed Nicolas Batum, from France. The 6-8 guard has an offensive upside, with good shooting range, a good handle and can drive to the hoop well.

More DiLeo on Speights

'"We think eventually he will be able to play both positions, the power forward position and the center position, so that fits into our philosophy. And he's a good person. He fits in with his character into our team. We did a lot of research on him. He fits our team like a glove.
ABOUT PLAYING AT FLORIDA
"They (Florida) won the national championship and he practiced and played against (Al) Horford and (Joakim) Noah for a whole season and learned a lot from those two players. That also was a factor in our decision."

Arthur finally goes

After IUPUI's George Hill (6-2, 180-pound guard) was taken by San Antonio at 26, Portland took Kansas forward Darrell Arthur at Nol. 27, which they will trade to Indiana.
Arthur, who some had thought would go in the top 15, fell due to what is being reported as some kind of kidney problem. During his two seasons at Kansas, Arthur never missed a game. He was great in the Final Four, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking four shots against North Carolina in the national semifinal game and then scored 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting and grabbed 10 boards in title win over Memphis.

Green to Memphis

Syracuse frosh Donte Greene went to the Grizzlies at 28. The 6-11 forward led the Cuse, with 17.7 a game and earned second team all-Big East.

Speights

We're waiting for Sixers' GM Ed Stefanski to talk about the Sixers' pick. We'll bring it to you as soon as he arrives.

Pistons grab White

Indiana senior D.J. White, a 6-9 forward who earned Big Ten player of the year honors after averaging 17.4 points and 10.3 rebounds, was grabbed by Detroit at No. 29. This is a good move for the Pistons. Antonio McDyess certainly won't be around much longer.

Celts giddy for Giddens

The world champ Boston Celtics selected New Mexico guard J.R. Giddens with the last pick in the first round. Giddens can score from anywhere on the court and is an outstanding leaper.

More Sixers' moves?

Tony DiLeo had this to say about the Sixers possibly dealing for a second round pick.
"We have some names up thee. The probability (of a trade) is not great. I would say not a great posibility, but we do have some names in the second round that if players do slip there are a couple players that we might try and go after. Maybe international players that we may draft and keep them overseas. So there are a few players on our board we might try, but at this point it is not a very good possibility.

Trade

Detroit trades D.J. White to the Seattle Supersonics. The Sonics will get Detroit's 32nd and 46th picks.

Stefanski on Speights

Sixers' general manager Ed Stefanski on the club's pick of Marreese Speights:
"I apologize for getting here so late. I wanted to be here an hour ago, but we got very active toward the end of the first round, but nothing happened.
"I think you know me pretty well and that's the guy we were going to pick. We really like Marreese for his size, he's extremely athletic, he likes to run the floor the way we like to play. He can make a shot. He has the chance to be the back-to-the-basket type of player with both his left and right hand. He's 20 years old and he needs to be nurtured. We don't expect him to come in and be the star. We're really high on his upside.

On the plan with the $11 million they have to spend on free agency.
"We have a plan. Part of the plan was getting a big guy with the 16th pick. We got the player we wanted with very big upside. The $11 million is very important to us to get that free agent that we want.

Pick updates

While we were listening to Stefanski the following picks took place:
31. Minnesota took Nikola Pekovic (Serbia) (6-11 center)b
32. Seattle took Walter Sharp (Ala.-Birmingham)
33. Portland took Joey Dorsey from Memphis (6-9 forward)
34. Minnesota took Mario Chalmers from Kansas (6-2 guard)
35. Clippers got DeAndre Jordan from Texas A&M (7-foot center)

37. Milwaukee grabbed Luc Richard Mbah a Moute of UCLA (6-8 forward)
38. Charlotte got Kyle Weaver of Washington St.(6-6 guard)
39. Chicago grabbed Sonny Weems from Arkansas (6-6 g-f)

Sean Singletary goes to Kings

Penn Charter and Virginia grad Sean Singletary was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 42nd pick. The Kings must like the basketball here in the Philly region, as they also used their 12th pick to take Jason Thompson, who hails from South Jersey.
With the 40th pick, the Nets took Memphis 6-7 slasher Chris Douglas-Roberts. Indiana followed and took 6-10 forward/center Nathan Jawai, who played in Australia last season.
