Sawallisch Sends Greetings

media3ad59ef861d04.jpgWhen pianist Rudolf Buchbinder sat down for rehearsals with the Philadelphia Orchestra Tuesday, he brought with him a special message. Buchbinder said he spoke with Wolfgang Sawallisch on Easter Sunday, and Sawallisch asked him to extend his greetings to the musicians. The elegant Buchbinder plays Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Philadelphians Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Geo.:

Nice message. Given Maestro Sawallisch's health, can he travel at all outside his home? Obviously from your article around his birthday in 2006, he couldn't fly. But I got the impression that he couldn't even take the train to hear concerts in Munich.

Anonymous:

I don't think I'll ever forget the great string of concerts Sawallisch led here in the winter-spring of 2001. I think his working relationship with the Orchestra peaked around then. They gave performances of Brahms 4th, Bruckner's 4th and Beethoven's Eroica that just couldn't have been much better, all within a few months of each other. Those were the days!

Mark:

Your review of "Pictures" was right on the mark. One of the large disappointments was the horns doubling what normally is the tenor tuba solo in Bydlo. Instead of the impression of a single ox cart I was left with the impression of something akin to "Wagon Train". It is a shame, Carol Jantsch's sound was wonderful and I would have liked to have heard her approach on the slightly larger instrument, all by itself.

Barry:

Dutoit is leading Pictures as part of the first program of next season in late September, so you won't have that long to wait to get your chance to hear her play that section on her own.
