Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra have agreed to an extention of the conductor's tenure, keeping him there at least through 2017-18, the orchestra announced today.
Welser-Möst became seventh music director in Cleveland in 2002.
The orchestra also announced five new "long-form" works leading up to the orchestra's 100th birthday in 2017-18 - by Marc-André Dalbavie, Osvaldo Golijov, HK Gruber, Matthias Pintscher, and Kaija Saariaho. Not a bad list.

I'm not a Welser-Most fan and was glad to see him go to Cleveland when that was first announced because it meant there was no chance he was coming to Philadelphia (his style of conducting is also probably better suited to an orchestra with Cleveland's sound profile than one with the sort of lush, more blended sound that is the tradition here).
I suppose this is more good news in that it means there won't be another major orchestra competing for the conducting talent out there.
I had been thinking that Vanska would be a good fit for Cleveland if Welser-Most was going to leave and focus his energies mainly on the Vienna State Opera. Now that that's not happening, maybe it's a little more likely that he'll wind up here (unless, of course, we find out at some point that he also is re-upping with Minnesota beyond his current contract length, which I think goes to around the time that Dutoit's interim stint ends).
