Back in the early 1980s I was sent to Chicago from Philly for a week of personnel training. One night I was having dinner at a restaurant with a former coworker who had relocated there. In the booth behind me were several men having an intense discussion and after awhile I could hear one saying that what he could not stand the most about the Reagan administration was that they were so banal in everything that they did. For awhile she and I just sat and listened to what he was saying and were quite mesmerized. I knew I had heard the voice before and it wasn't until near the end of diner that I realized it was Studs Terkel sitting right behind me. I was so awed I could not even turn to take a look at him as we were leaving. Several months later I heard him being interviewed and he repeated the remarks. If I could have gotten interviewed before him, I could have beat Studs to the point!
