A Draft with Potential and Questions For The Sixers

So with all the wheeling and dealing, the 76ers ended up with a glut of frontcourt players, probably two rookies too many, in a draft that offers promise, but also uncertainty.
Just because Georgia Tech freshman forward Thaddeus Young was considered a surprise pick, doesn’t mean he was a bad one.
The flip-flop of picks with Miami to acquire 7-foot Colorado State power forward Jason Smith gave the Sixers the power forward they desperately needed in this draft.
In two draft-day deals the Sixers got Vanderbilt swingman Derrick Byars and Providence forward-center Herbert Hill.
There is no way that there will be room for four rookies on the roster, but King said that things will work themselves out. In other words, if the second-rounders play well, they might be trade bait and if they don’t they will be ex-Sixers.
Even Young admitted he didn’t expect to be picked as high as 12th, but he is a player who got better as the year went on. And at 19-year-old, his better days are ahead.
The Sixers did try to trade up and president and general manger Billy King thought he had a deal with a team in the Top 7. He was looking for a power forward or a center and when all the elite ones were gobbled up in the Top 10, the Sixers went for the best available athlete.
Young averaged 14.4 points, shot well from the perimeter and showed a penchant to want to defend. The Sixers loved his character as much as his skill on the court.
Smith averaged 16.8 points and 10.1 rebounds and is great at running the floor. Whether he’s ready to be banging with other power forwards will be a key question.
Byars is somebody the Sixers got at 42. He was projected to be a first round pick, so there is decent value in the pick, even if there may not be a roster spot.
Hill is another banger who averaged 18.9 points and 9.8 rebounds for Providence.
We won’t get a better feel of these players until they compete in the Las Vegas Summer League beginning July 6.
So it’s not right to pan the draft, or to praise it either. One thing it seems the Sixers should have done was to recoup a No. 2 pick for the future. They traded their 2009 pick to Miami in the Smith deal and their No. 2 pick next season is owned by Golden State.
Other than that, let the players’ work on the court determine if this was a good draft or not.

I do not understand how you trade your 30 pick to receive a 42nd pick. Then turn around and spend their 38 pick for 55th pick. I always thought it went the other way around (Must be a new kind of math) I am not very happy what the did. So much for trading to get the picks they want below then i.e 30-21 to get a player around 15 or so.

The Thad Young pick may end up being a good pick, but right now, it just reminds me of the Larry Hughes pick many years ago -- so much upside, but needs to develop. I expect Thad Young to be a solid contributor in the NBA 4-5 years from now -- FOR SOME OTHER TEAM

Francis Brown:

The Sixers are now officially the Phoenix Cardinal's of the N.B.A.! This draft is a diaster.
How can you trade away 2 players that you can stash in Europe for a couple of years to gain experience for 2 players who wont even make the team and losing higher value picks to do it. Lose their #2 for 2009. Draft a player that essentially is a clone of Iguodala and Carney. Bypassing Thorton and Wright when they could have traded up from 21 to get Young if they wanted him so badly. Losing the successor to Miller at the point. The only consulation is that the Celtics draft was worse!

Tom Hazelwood:

Billy King welcome to your demise. You have set yourself up for your final Sixers pink slip. We need to get someone that knows about basketball in his seat. Ed Snider -LISTEN UP - the only way we know that Billy King is a General Manager is because the General Manager Title is next to his name on his door at your office. We need someone with knowledge or smarts. He has only picked one good player (New AI) in the last few years. We all know the squirrel finds a nut story. I would recommend either making either Larry Brown the GM or finding someone in the ranks from winning teams that know how to put together real professional teams. (I.e. Phoenix, San Antonio)

Andre Pacheco:

Why can't Billy King keep the europeans that he drafts once in a while. And what is going on with his infatuation with small forwards who need to develop. Hopefully this is the last time he commands the sixer draft.

barry:

the fans only recourse is to continue to let our wallets do the talking like last year. eventually if Snider won't listen Comcast will.

Pat:

I hate to admit that I am a fair-weather fan. But, how can I be a fan. I am a Iverson fan, but I was also a 76er fan. A fan is short for fanatic. What the heck can you be fanatic about with this team! Why should I pay my money to see guys who are a notch above the North Philly playgrounds. Billy King is HORRIBLE!!! We are now set for at least 6 to 7 year of mediocrity at best. Oh well, back to NBA League Pass...

Tom:

You gotta love most Sixers fans. If the Sixers somehow got both Oden and Durant they'd still complain about something.

Could they keep 4 rookies? Absolutely.
Dalembert, Korver, Iguodala, W. Green are the only players with any kind of trade value (J. Smith free agent).

Carney showed me very little. L. Williams did nice mop up duty late in the season. Bobby Jones (11th guy)? Shavlik Randolph (12th guy)?

If the 4 guys drafted beat out another 4 guys on the roster, I'd consider that competition.

For a team that finished 35-47 in a very weak Eastern Conference, I'd say competition is needed.

D-Walt:

I think these 4 rookies can make the roster. Based on the latest roster from the official site, Kevin Ollie, Alan Henderson, and Bobby Jones should be gone. Plus, Carney, AI, Korver, and Young all play the same position(s). This may seem crazy, but Derrick Byars and Herbert Hill are "experienced" guys who probably could come in and contribute right away.

Damon:

As I've read all of the posts by my fellow Sixer fans... one thing dawns on me, and that would be most are frustrated with Billy King.

Now that I have shown myself to be master of the obvious, I'll tell everyone why Billy King drafts the players he does and also why he needs to find other employment.

Billy King played four yrs at Duke. He's 6'6, and was a good defender who had limited offensive skills, and was a heady ball player. There is a saying in business, atleast in the business world I'm in. We say that we hire people into our company that are most like us. Now if you look at most of Billy's drafts, he drafts forwards or combo forwards who can play more than one position who by and large are pretty good defenders but need to improve their offensive skills.

Lastly, Billy King needs to take a step back and realize that maybe he just isn't cut out to be the man making the decisions down in South Philly. The organization needs a fresh approach down there, and no that fresh approach won't come from Larry Brown, or even elevating Tony Dileo, who in my view should have been gone 10 yrs ago. If DiLeo was making any worthwhile contributions or had any stroke in the front office this team would look totally different.

Anyway sixer fans it's time to struggle through another losing season.

P.S. Billy... just a piece of advise for you. By the time your collection of young Billy Kings is ready to make any noise in the NBA , will Andre Miller even be in the league? Las Vegas odds say that Miller will be close to 35 if not older and not playing major minutes here in Philly. So exactly why is Andre Miller so "untouchable?" Just a thought Billy. Juuuuust something for you to ponder.
