Any momentum and good will that was earned with Friday’s 96-85 win at Chicago was given right back by the 76ers in Saturday’s home opener, a 93-88 loss to the New Jersey Nets at the Wachovia Center.
The Sixers are 1-2 and have been in all three games against three likely Eastern Conference playoff teams, Toronto, Chicago and the Nets.
Yet for the Sixers to steal a few more of these games against more talented opponents, they have to do one seemingly simple thing – hit free throws.
In the opening 106-97 loss to Toronto, the Sixers were 14 for 23 from the foul line (60.9 percent), while Toronto was 15 for 17 (88.2 percent).
In the loss to the Nets, the Sixers were 21 for 32 from the foul line (65.6 percent). New Jersey was 19 for 25 (76 percent).
These percentages don’t add up to winning basketball.
There are other things the Sixers have to work on such as defending the three point shot, and shooting treys as well, but if they don’t do a better job of shooting from the foul line, they will continue to give games away.
Had the Sixers won against the Nets, there would have been true momentum. Now they hope to get to the .500 level with Wednesday’s home game against Charlotte.
And nobody should suggest that this will be an easy game for the Sixers. They aren’t talented enough to think any team will be easy.
The Sixers will have to grind it out most nights and in the first three games they have done just that. It’s just that they have been let down on the foul line. This is one of the main situations that must be remedied if the Sixers hope to enjoy a respectable season this year.

This team reminds me of the clarence whitherspoon
area. A team with no true stars! There going to beat the bobcats, why because they have fresh leggs. Let see, they don't play ollie why? shavic gets no playing time why? and poor number 12 draft pick just riding the pine. Can we just see the kid play something! can you imagine if the bench played 10 min each, maybe the starters could have fresh leggs in the fourth quater, when it is time to buckle down and play defense! and maybe they could score 6 points each and the sixers win!

So, the contract issue aint affecting Iggy? Wrong! Other than the three ball he hit late in the game he vanised in the fourth quater and didn't want the rock. He had five fouls and he played like he had six and he was on the bench.

Hey Marc, any idea about the final disposition of Byars. I take it that it was his injuries that never allowed him to compete for a spot. Too bad, because the form he exhibited last year is exactly what is most grievously lacking with the 6ers this year. Green has had some streaky fine games periodically over the past couple of years, but has never developed into a consistent presence. Hope that Carney blossoms with more playing time, but he's never shown that steady court sense either. As far as scoring from the four spot.....

Willie green and carney are not the problem, managing the game is the problem! sixers have a a small forward, they just not playing him!

Is there a reason Willie Green and his incredibly inefficient offensive game, which includes an amazing ability not to get to the free throw line, is getting 30 to 40 minutes a game? Play Williams and Carney and see what they can do. It is known what Green can do and it is not much.

Has anyone else noticed that John Salmons is suddenly averaging 21 points and 6 assists a game for the Kings? Hmm... Salmons, Raja Bell, Matt Harpring... Man, if only the Sixers could get a good small forward someday, but how?
We're like the NBDL for the rest of the league. We acquire talent, don't let it play or don't coach it well, then trade it after three years so it can blossom somewhere else.

Why is Kyle Korver getting a free pass?If I'm not mistaken,he's suppose to be the Sixers sharp shooter, but his shooting over the the last three games has'nt been anything close to sharp.I'm tired of the whole one trick pony thing with him,and when he goes up against rugged small forwards like,Andres Nocioni,Richard Jefferson, and Tayshaun Prince,he disappears in a big way.And why is Thaddeus Young, and Shavlik Randolph not getting any burn over Calvin Booth and Willie Gree? They can't be any worse than those two.

Willie Green can score but he is killin us so far with his poor shooting percentage. I know its early but I predict that L.Williams will soon be the 2nd guy off the bench(after Korver) and he will have equal playing time as Green and Carney which will be a good thing.
This year is a setup year. We have to get a stud like Elton Brand next summer when this team will really be interesting to watch.
Sorry but Thaddeus Young is a bust.

Boy, Marc, you are correct. A win last night would have been "true momentum." It didn't happen, but, overall, I remain excited...got to make those foul shots, though.
You know, a little bit of this, a little bit of that and the Sixers could have been 3-0 right now.
Pretty amazing.

Im a little disapointed that the sixers kept shooting the ball even though they were missing everything. Instead why didn't they post up and go inside. I mean come on man, it's not that hard!

Wow...that's ridiculous. Moron.

Sixers best post up player is on the bench, Thad!

If iggy is truly on the verge of stardom, he would be lighting up the scoreboard in games like last night. Like the rest of the team, his individual play is and has been erratic. He is good all around, but superstar money? Not yet. I think these player personnel staff sometimes pick good talent, but even they are not adequately developed by this staff. I also am confused by Larry Brown's involvement on the team. He's a great coach, but very stubborn and made poor choices with draft picks. LB likes to force players to play his way. Cheeks has had no success as a head coach. We need an overhaul from BK to all the coaches.

Tom you can call me all of the names that you would like ...I want the Sixes to do well ... I'm a huge fan but there is a reason why you continually see (DNP - Coach's decision) next to Thaddeus's name in the box score. Obviously the coach doesn't think that he can play.

Hey Marc,
Two questions...
1) How long 'til Lou Williams replaces Willie Green in the starting lineup?
2) Why isn't Shav getting any court time? Is it because of his injury or because Cheeks doesn't think he can contribute? It's gotta be the former, right, since Booth is on the court for a few minutes every game and there's no way he's better than Shavlik.

Definitely need to start lou williams in place of willie green and jason smith in place of dalembert. I dont care how much money the lanky goofy one is making or how recovered willie is from his knee - both of them are second rate players at best.
Dalembert can block all the shots he wants, but for each one he makes at least two bonehead plays that cost them points, not to mention he couldnt find the basket if it was glued to his forehead. Smith can block shots too - without all the arms-and-legs-flying-everywhere goofiness of dalembert.
and obviously williams is a better scorer than green...nuff said on that. If this is supposed to be a transition year, time to start transitioning - put the young guys in and let them have at it. sure they'll make a few mistakes, but better now than next year, when its supposed to start counting...

This is one ugly team. Iggy and andre miller are the only solid players at this point. Sit Sleepy Sam Dalembert, put in Smith. Louis Williams is a decent scorer but extremely sloppy but with that being said hes much better than Willie G.
This team needs to play Thad a couple of minutes a game, riding the bench will not teach him anything since this team is too inconsistent.
Mo isnt a bad coach but my only problem with him is he doesnt put the best players on the floor.

I agree. This team is an embarrassment. How in the world does Billy King remain in his job? He must have some pictures of Ed Snider with goats. King should have quit years ago out of embarrassment. As long as people still attend these games, nothing will change. The only hope is a boycott.
