For Now, Williams Still Better Off The Bench

After Friday’s sensational fourth quarter, there will be an outcry to have Lou Williams in the starting lineup. Our take – continue to bring him off the bench, but increase the minutes if he continues his impressive play.
The third-year guard almost single-handily led the Sixers back in an impressive effort that fell just short.
Williams scored 19 of his career high 21 points in the fourth quarter of the Sixers’ 105-103 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Before the fourth quarter, Williams had only played slightly more than eight minutes.
Williams is one of those energy players who can spark a team and also has the ability to get to the basket and draw fouls. When he is hitting from the perimeter the way he did against Toronto (3 for 3 in the fourth quarter from beyond the arc) he can be downright scary.
Still, the spark he brings is worth bringing him off the bench. In the 93-88 loss to the New Jersey Nets, Williams scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Through five games, Williams is averaging just under 18 minutes a game.
Coach Maurice Cheeks has made it known that players who perform, will earn more minutes. That is obviously why Cheeks let Williams in for the entire fourth quarter on Friday against Toronto.
While not playing much before the fourth quarter, Williams was fresh.
This season in five games he has scored 32 of his 48 points in the fourth quarter. A player who can come off the bench in crunch time and produce is valuable.
Right now things should stay the same, other than the fact that it appears as if Williams has earned himself a few more minutes.

TKTK:

First off, keep up the good work with your blog and articles. We all appreciate the work you are putting in.

I don't care if he starts, but LouW needs to play 30+ minutes a game- and the minutes are there. 15 Min at PG and 15 Min at SG minimum are there and should be his.

Lou is an impact player- keeping him on the bench would be like the Eagles not using Westbrook.

The team is now +50 points in the 90 minutes Lou has played. The team really has only had success when he is on the floor.

He is not dominating the ball, and with more experience his mistakes on D should come down. He is a bit over-aggressive in his man D, and that leads him vulnerable to picks and drives. This is very correctable.

I don't know ultimately what level of player LouW will become, but watching him develop is one the few real bright spots in this otherwise difficult to watch season.

Oh, and one more thing. Philly fans may not want to have "the next AI," but Lou seems to not only have the skills and size, but also brings to the table many of the intangibles that makes AI such a star.

Lou seems to have that special 'It' that allows him to put his stamp on a game. Hopefully, PG 101 under Mo and Miller will temper his scoring ability so he knows when to facilitate and when to take over.

No doubt AI is the much bigger star and better player, but I regret he was thrown out there and told to take over from day one, where Lou had a chance to learn not just under AI, but some great game controlling PG's to know when best to pick you spots.

Marc, in an earlier blog you said it was important for the team not to fall behind before the 4th quarter. But now you agree with keeping their best offensive player on the bench until the 4th quarter. I think you already have a designated sparkplug in Korver, and a potential one in Young. Williams has put his time in and shows terrific potential.

Rick Marshall:

This young kid looks like the real deal. They are going to be forced to play him more and get better results than Carney is giving. I like his potential. What of Young? Is his game not up to par yet, as I don't get a favorable consensus here in Georgia.

john d.:

Marc, love the blog, but come on, man. Fresh legs? The guy is 21 years old, he could play two 48 minute games back to back and still not be tired. The kid looks good and NEEDS to start. Willie Green should be relegated to the bench from now on.

If this team is truly dedicated to developing these young players, Lou needs 30+ minutes a game and Thad needs 10-15 a night. I can't believe a #12 pick would not be capable of performing in that limited amount of time.

Chris:

I agree to keep Lou Will coming off the bench to give them a boost ... but he needs to average 25 - 30 minutes per night to see how well he develops.
I want to see Rodney Carney start to live up to his potential and get about the same number of minutes. All that being said I am OK with Willie Green being the odd man out. We know what he can do and he just does have that explosive nature to his game to be a difference maker in my opinion.

Jake:

What an exciting game, even if the result wasn't what we'd hoped. Too bad nobody was there to see it. This is a really fun team to watch.

Ray:

Man, this team is fun to watch they had me on the edge of my seat in the fourth quater cheering them on. We didn't get the win but I'm still impressed in what I see on the floor. Every one is playing hard, even though some of our players are in a slump shooting wise (Kover,Carney,Green) Look out when everyone get's their touch going. Great game looking forward to Sunday's game. I'm out!

Jon:

Lou is our Flash Gordon! Flash meaning Ben of the Bulls, not Tom of the Phillies. I like having him fresh in the fourth. If he can close our games like that on a routine basis, then his minutes will have to increase in quarters 1-3. It's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Sonny Hill:

Why is Mr. Narducci not ripping Kyle"ONE TRICK PONY"Korver, for his ineffective, non defense playing a##.They're playing him 30+ minutes a game to hit spot up threes, and he can't even do that,so why is he not catching the heat that Dalembert, and Willie Green is catching.I get as a professional sports player, when you're White you're right, and when you're Black you're whack in the media's eyes.

PhillyWill:

Ive always been a sixers fan even now that I no longer live there, what I see is the sixers spend money on either washed up stars or keep letting go and bringing back past headaches.Kevin Ollie was a sixer seems like 2 to 3 different times. they need to rebuild with all new players or spend some money and get a real star. After AI they will never get another star unless they are willing to spend the money. Why pay five or six guys to ride the bench when you could pay for what you want.We could'nt get a championship until we harold Katz spent the money to get Moses Malone to go with Erving ,cheeks and dont forget Andrew Tooney and Bobby Jones. So in order to get a chapionship you gots to be willing to pay.

babygirl:

I am glad to Lou Will given the chance to be the player That I've always known him to be. I wish they would play him more minutes in the earlier part in game to keep him from having to work so hard in the 4th quarter, but hey will take a clutch time player (Horry) on this team......... get-ur-done baby

John:

Louis Williams currently leads the sixers in most 'relevant' per 40 minute stats, points, steals (if played over 15 minutes per game) assists, FTA,

He also leads the team in A:TO ratio, eFG% and TS% (Smith leads in 'traditional' FG%) and can draw fouls, which willie green can not.

They both suck defensively.

Yes williams is 6'1, but offensively he's a more dangerous more complete weapon than willie green has EVER BEEN

The fact that he is only playing 17 MPG while Green averags slightly more than 30 MPG in the first 5 games is an indication of how incompetent both the coach and gm of the sixers are.

the 2 inch height difference shouldn't matter cause this team SUCKS defensively (the fact that the perimeter defense NEVER gets better should be an indictment again of both coaching stuff and GM) and needs to out run teams...Louis Williams is a more dangerous offensive weapon than Willie Green...and as such should probably play more minutes.

The sixers committment to green when almost the entire nba universe realizes what he is and isn't is pathetic.

kevin:

Lets not beat up on Willie! He is doing all he can do.

howard:

Lou's best play was the pass to Dalembart for the slam. BTW---NO TURNOVERS. I agree with everyone on that 30 minute mark and with carney as well..not important that Lou starts now although Carney should and NOT be switched back over Green. Lou will get plenty of chances when they trade andre miller at the break. They do need long term a pure point backup if this does in fact happen.

Willie Green looks like the 10th man. He is a poor mans Aaron Mckie who can't shoot, dribble, drive or pass. I know everyone must like him but its so obvious Rodney Carney has so much more upside.

Sonny, your 100% correct on Korver and his penalty should be less minutes. My question is this? If you could play either willie green or kyle korver 20 minutes a games who helps the team win more. It has to be Korver with the make up of the team...

Its almost as if having Willie Green on the Roster is holding back a lot of people. Trade him..

howard:

Team is really fun to watch so far especially since lacking a low post scorer. For that reason my only disapoinment is not seeing Young play more minutes since he has a post up game.

If WIllies Green is gone it allows all the players with real NBA talent to play more (carney, lou williams, Young).

No disrepect to Green I just dont see his game

Dan:

The sixers, although they might not be good this year are getting better. Over the past couple years we have signed and traded for many players who have hurt us against the salary cap. That had us in handcuffs for a while. Starting this summer we can start wheeling and dealing. Honestly, with one more lottery pick and an offseason where we can add some parts, I really don't think Maurice and Co. are that far away from turning it around. There is a young nucleus developing right in front of us.

Bill :

What you say about Lou W starting seems to be on target. He has earned more minutes. I'd like to see Thad Y get more minutes. The problem with the idea of trading Andre Miller is that he is one of the pieces of the team that might attract a stud free agent to the team. Depending on who develops this year, the key piece to seek in free agency could be a PF or a SG. I don't think we want to go down the path of having a 6-foot SG again. This make Lou W a back-up point and a back-up SG for a while until he is good enough at the point to replace Andre Miller.

Bill

Binghamton Bill:

Let's look into the (hopefully) not-so-distant future shall we?
If BK's vision is to blossom, a Sixers team that is contending for an Eastern Conference title will have a disciplined(stay with me here)and defensively dominating Sammy D at Center; an older Young, as in Thad, who has matured into a George Lynch type player, that is, someone who defends and rebounds well for a small forward, but who, unlike Lynch, can not only run the floor, but shoot the 3 or post up a smaller defender; and Iggy is at the 2, in his prime and one of the top 5 players in the league.
So the big questions are power forward and point guard. Is Jason Smith that guy? To fully utilize Dalembert I think you need a rugged PF to get the rebounds while Sammy patrols the lane. I know that sounds like Reggie Evans, but trust me in this fantasy it's NOT Reggie Evans.
This player either comes through the lottery, free agency or through a trade of Andre Miller.
Which brings up the next question - who is playing the point on this team? Is it still Miller, or is it the theme of this thread, Lou W? Can an offensive minded PG lead a team deep into the playoffs? If you still get others involved, keep your turnovers to a minimum, and play defense, yes. Look at Utah's PG. But in the next year or so the Sixers need to see if Lou is that guy.
If this team is to prosper, Lou will not be the starting 2-guard. He'll either be the point, or sitting next to Smith and Kyle Korver on the bench.

Southwest Philly:

I know this is wishful thinking but,is it too much to ask for,if the Sixers can somehow play competitive, and lose enough games,in order for them to get the top pick? And with that top pick,I want the Sixers to draft PF Michael Beasley. In his first game,he had 32pts,24rbs,and 4blocks.

Oliver Miller:

Yeah, I like that Lou Williams, but I'm highly against getting rid of Andre Miller. Why do we want to get rid of him? To free up cap space? What's the point of freeing up cap space when you'll then have to just go out and replace the player that you got rid of? It's hard to find a good point guard in the NBA these days, is it not?

As for Kyle "I can't play defense and I can't consistently hit threes even though that's supposedly my only talent" Korver; yeah, I don't get the team's infatuation with him either. Supposely he "spreads the floor," because he's a three-point threat. That's nice. But it'd be nicer still if he consistently hit his shots.

John:

In case any one missed it, Andre Miller is having a bad season as a point guard..his value is depreciating by the second.

You know what would be nice for Kyle Korver haters to realize...THE SIXERS HAVE NO INSIDE POST GAME...the sixers miss the offense of JOE FREAKING SMITH...Evans is terrible offensively and Sams shooting under 40% FG% (for a center that's just embarassing)

You know what that allows teams to do? It allows them to double team the perimeter easily...it allows them to double kyle korver consistently.

Oh yeah, he's also playing injured, and still is the only player who improves after EVERY season.

But yeah, bench him cause the rest of the team is excellent.

Miller should be traded cause he's an asset but in 2 years he's gone.

john d.:

damn, we sucked vs. new orleans. Chris Paul toyed with whoever was guarding him. Mo must cut Korver's minutes. This guy just keeps shooting and shooting. Lou Williams did very little. Iguodala was probably our best player, but he needs to cut down the turnovers big time.

We can't guard anyone right now.
