A Wild Night In Memphis

MEMPHIS -- Just when you are about to write the 76ers off, they have a performance like Saturday’s crazy 99-97 win over the Memphis Grizzlies that ended with Andre Iguodala's game-winning 20-footer at the buzzer.
Down by 11 past the midway point in the third quarter, the Sixers appeared lifeless.
And Iguodala was going through a major funk. He shot 2 for 12 through the first three periods.
Andre Miller carried the Sixers until the final period, scoring 27 of his 29 points in the first three quarters.
Again, if Miller keeps playing like this, it would be hard to trade him unless the price was steep.
And while Miller kept the Sixers in the game for three quarters, Iguodala produced one of if not his most memorable quarter by scoring 17 points in the final period. He said afterwards that his confidence was waning a little, as his shots were clanging off the rim.
Then he shot 7 for 9 in the fourth quarter and now the team feels good about facing Miami on Wednesday at the Wachovia Center before going on a six-game road trip.
Iguodala talked before the game about how important it is to have some momentum prior to the trip that begins in Sacramento on Friday and ends Jan. 6 in Denver.
This win wouldn’t have happened had it not been for Kyle Korver and Thaddeus Young, who were both outstanding off the bench.
Like the rest of the team, Korver has been inconsistent this season, but he scored 14 points, hitting 6 of 11 from the field. Young scored eight and played 22 very effective minutes.
As Jason Smith seems to be wearing down a little, Young appears to be revived at the prospect of being in the rotation. Don’t be surprised if Young’s playing time continues to increase.
To have more success, however, the Sixers can’t be riding this crazy roller coaster.
It’s nice to have character wins, but in order to achieve them, it means the team had to play badly to get down by double-digit deficits.
This might not have been as improbable as trailing Portland by 25 before winning (although if the Trail Blazers were playing as well then as now, that might not have happened).
Still, it was a quality win and don’t discount it by saying it came over the Grizzlies. This is the same team that beat San Antonio earlier in the week.
Any win on the road in the NBA can’t be taken for granted. Nor can the Sixers ability to fight back be discounted.
It’s just that playing one great quarter can only win so many games.

A good game all around and one of the few games I really enjoyed getting to watch. I was most impressed with Thadeus Young tonight was so glad Cheeks gave him some added playing time. He played solid and put in a good effort and looks to be improving well. Unfortunately I was a little dissapointed in Rodney Carney who came off the bench to have a real solid game last night but really struggled today. Though Willie Green has been so utterly incompetant so far this year I'd like to see Carney get more significant playing time coming off the bench in the future.

datruth4life:

Butt Cheeks turned back into Mo Cheeks, the coach tonight. I didn't know that Willie Green was hurt (I missed the first 5 minutes of the game) but Carney showed that he deserves some minutes off the bench.

What I'm hoping that Cheeks might have stumbled into is using Thad at the end of the games at PF. He is a much better option than either Korver or Evans, is a good rebounder, defender and showed tonight that he can score on the block. I think this was his best game of the season by far, and hitting those two free throws at the end under that type of pressure was big.

Andre Miller was FIRE tonight. Marc said with him playing like this, it will be hard to trade him unless the package is steep. Let's not get too carried away here. With Miller playing like he played tonight, this is still a 30-win team and Miller will be a 32-year-old in a few months. I think Ed is wise enough to know that taking one step back by trading Miller gives this franchise the best chance to take two giant steps forward with $23M under the cap if they can get an expiring contract and a pick.

Many people are saying free agents won't come here because Philly is a bad team. I will quote what Steve Kerr told Marv Albert about free agency a couple of years ago: "NBA players will play with Attilah the Hun if the money's right." I think the extra cap room could allow the 76ers, if Brand, J. Smith, or others aren't available, to get their young PF via a trade.

I'd also like A. Miller to have the chance to finish his career competing for a championship instead toiling on a lottery-bound team. Besides, the 76ers need to know if Lou Will can be a starter at PG in this league.

It's looking more and more like Thad could be that starting 3 next year. He can already hold his own defensively, is a good rebounder and can post up and hit the mid-range jumper. He played some good D on Mike Miller during that whole second half. With Dalembert, Iggy, Thad and Lou Will, that could be 4 of the starting 5 lineup next year. All we need is E. Brand, Josh Smith or Michael Beasley to plug in at that 4 spot.

I saw Shav and Herb Hill on the bench in suits last night. Will we ever see them in a uniform? Who knows?

And for the person who keeps saying the 76ers should have taken Sean Williams instead of Jason Smith, Williams was selected AHEAD of Smith in the draft. So, what you are really saying is that the 76ers should have taken Williams instead of Thaddeus at 12. Considering that Williams spent most of his junior and senior years suspended because he would rather "toke" than play ball, there was no way this organization was going to take a chance on a player like that after all the difficulties it's had off the floor with Iverson. Not happening.

With Thaddeus doing what he's doing now at 19, that pick could turn out to be pretty big down the road.

Pat H:

Igoudala, 2 rebounds, 1 assist . Sorry, thats not good enough . The fans need to look at these stats, not points scored. With his size and athleticism, whats he doing out there ? This shows me he's standing around when he doesn't have the ball. Memphis, is a bad team !

Clint:

Is it me,or does Thaddeus Young's offensive game look more polished right now, than what Iggy's game was when he was a rookie? And speaking of Iggy,it was nice to see him come back in the 4th quarter, after struggling most of the game.I'm starting to think that what happened to Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady will happen with Young and Iguodala, meaning their games will cancel each other out,and one of them will have to be traded.Thaddeus Young just looks more natural as a scorer compared to Iggy, who forces his offensive game, most of the time. And with the frame Thaddeus has,he can put on 15-20lbs,easy.And almost forgot, poor Carney.I mean,it's not his fault he got picked so early in the draft because he has no handle, can't rebound, and does'nt move real well without the ball. And speaking also about Sean Williams, his problem is that he is so anxious to block a shot that if an opposing big man uses the pump fake on him,it will almost always draw the foul on him with his overagressiveness.

jamesmoref:

I love Andre Miller. If Allen Iverson had Andre Miller's temperment and professionalism, he'd still be here. It was nice to see Andre smile after he hit the jumper near the end.

kevin:

See the fans will pat you on your back, but the fans will also kick you in your butt, too.

This was a nice character win for the Sixers, especially for Iguodala, who needed a big game in the worst way. This should answer all the haters who think he can't be a closer.

His coach doesn't help him out much, by constantly starting him 20 feet from the hoop. Why doesn't he get touches in the post? He has showed a post game before, even while AI was here. Gay was not strong enough to keep him off the block, yet the Sixers never used that.

Hey, Clint. The Carter/McGrady thing doesn't really apply here because Iguodala is a natural playmaker. The cousins were both natural scorers. Plus McGrady wanted to go home (he's from Fla). So that doesn't really work. I don't see the Sixers letting Andre or Thad walk, and their games are complementary.

Craig:

I didn't get to see the game last night. But am I hearing that Cheeks used Young in the post?

Zoe:

Why not build around Andre Miller Yes he is 31 but Jason kid is 35 and the net build the team around him I think miller is just reaching his prime as a point guard. The entire league with the exception of a few teams hunger for a good point guard, why should we even be thinking about trading a highly needed comodity anyway?

SixerzGuy:

I was iffy about Young earlier in the season, but I fell in love with his game last night because I realized something about the way he plays: he's like those old 80's players who were all about basketball and winning and fundamentals, rather than trying to get on ESPN! With the way he's built (put a costume and a mask on him, he's Spider-Man, and I hope that becomes his nickname, Sixers marketing would love that), you're hoping for the next Danny Granger, or Josh Smith, leaping out of the building for dunks and slick aerial moves. But he plays like he has no hops, trying to get the ball in the basket with simple old-school techniques, like with his little hook, and his mid-range jumper, and his finger-rolls. I don't think I've ever seen him dunk the ball! But the great part is, he plays defense like today's player! And he doesn't sweat! No matter what, he's always got that same Thaddeus Young look on his face - not only have I seen him not dunk, I don't think I've ever seen him get tired!

Can't stop raving here - three more things about his game that make him a great team fit:

1. He moves great without the ball, both on offense and defense, and can get anywhere in the halfcourt with 2~3 steps. Seriously, he's Spider-Man.

2. This is related to #1 - he doesn't need the ball to be effective.

3. This is one area where he needs to work on, but he shows flashes of talent here - he makes good decisions with his passing

James:

The more I watch this team play the more I struggle to figure out how the pieces fit. I like alot of the young athletic talent but cannot figure out how to deploy all those small forwards...???

Could the sixers ever trade Andre Miller for a PF that can score (and be counted on to hit late free throws)and play Iggy at the point with Louis at the 2? I know, I know, it sounds wacky....But seriously how do you get all of our young talent on the court at the same time?

Rob Charry:

The more I watch Dalembert play, the more I realize how much he would benefit by playing with a legitimate power forward.Could you imagine Dalembert playing with Dwight Howard,he would be a double double guy every night.Oh yeah,Kyle Korver needs to be trade in the worst way.

Craig:

I would play way more up the court, pressure defense with all those small forwards/2 guards. Also, Chris Wilcox would be the PF I would go after. He is 25, has two years left on his contract, and makes $6.5m per year. 14 and 7.5/gm

datruth4life:

Thad and Iggy's games are complementary. Iggy is a ballhandler and assist guy and Thad is more of a finisher. They both play D and rebound. Could be a pretty good duo in the future.

Sixerzguy, I have seen Thaddeus dunk about 3 or 4 times this year. Don't be fooled. He can get up. He missed one tip dunk against Indy the other night where he was way above the rim. One good thing is that it looks like his body has developed a lot just since this summer. He works out regularly in the offseason with Michael Jordan's former trainer, Tim Grover, so I think he's really going to fill out. He just turned 19, so I think he still might grow another inch or two.

The more I see Thad, the more his game kind of reminds me of Antwan Jamison more than anyone else. They both can play on the block and can come out to the perimeter and hit shots. Plus they have a nack of getting the ball on the rim quickly down low. They both have a game that looks funky around the basket, but is effective nevertheless.

Herbert Hill has that to his game as well, the ability to get his hands on the ball and put it in the basket in one motion. Will we ever see it in a regular season game? Who knows?

Tyler:

I personally love Andre Miller, I think he is a good solid point guard and a great personality on and off the court.. but unfortunately he has to be traded. Although he's certainly not done for his career, the Sixers need a player they can re build with for the long future and by trading Miller, adding that cap room to get a Power Forward in the future that will allow us to see if Sweet Lou is that guy that we all hope he will be.

Plus Thaddeus (Spider Man!) Young really impressed me last night. I really like the thought of him and Iguodala teaming up in the future.

Pat H:

Iggys post game ? Sean, you sure your not his cousin. Playmaker ? For a guy who prides himself on knowledge of the game . You do have your blinders on when it comes to Iggy Shooting 39% from the floor. His rebounding is poor. His assist/to ratio is terrible. When was the last time he went left? Take away his high wire act, you have nada..I hope I'm getting my point accross. Defense ? Great stance,I'll give you that. The biggest problem I see with fans, is that they want to be right about their judgment of players, it blinds them from noticing glaring weaknesses. One more comment, people killed Salmons, now his stats are as good as Iggys...

Brian:

Dude, Salmons is also significantly older than Iggy. Thats just flat out a poor argument. You are insane if you would rather have salmons over Iguodala.

Pat H:

I wasn't talkin trade Iggy for Salmons. I was just trying to show people, Iggys stats are similar. Iggys, an average player who's gonna put some team, hopefully not the sixers, in salary cap hell for years. ok dude...
