PORTLAND, Ore. -- In an effort to create more salary cap space, the 76ers traded Kyle Korver today to the Utah Jazz for Gordan Giricek and a first round draft pick.
Giricek, who is making $4 million this season has an expiring contract.
Korver, who is earning nearly $4.4 million this year, has about $10 million owed to him in the next two years after this one.
The first round pick is protected according to Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski.
The pick can start in 2009 and the Sixers have seven years in which to make it. There are different protections for each year, according to Stefanski.
Don't be surprised if the Sixers don't trade the pick. Stefanski indicated that the pick could be a chip in a future trade.
Stefanski said as things stand now, the Sixers will be about $10 million under the cap. That could be the most in the NBA.
And of course, don't expect things to stay as they are.
Like Korver, Giricek is known as a perimeter shooter. This season he has had scant playing time and is averaging 4.3 points per game.
Korver, who has had an up and down season, has is averaging 10 points.
Ironically, the Sixers and will meet the Jazz Wednesday in Utah.

This type of deal makes me think they are loading up for a big move.
Whether that's a free agent sign and trade type move or a straight trade.
There's another couple shoes to drop.
Personally, I think moving Korver on is ultimately the right move. If the new GM is trying to get really athletic and disruptive, then Korver is the guy who had to go.
IMHO - I'm hoping that Carney/Green are next (and that's not a knock on either player, but I think they need to move on).

I love this move! It's a trade Billy King never would have made. I'm guessing they're going to shop Andre Miller hard before the trading deadline as his stock will never be higher. It's hard to take last night win too seriously with the Kings playing without Martin and Artest but a win is a win!

I think this is a win win situation for both teams. The Sixers get more cap space, and Utah gets a legitimate perimeter threat. Now there is no reason why Thaddeus Young should'nt get more playing time.I think Korver will flourish playinq in the free flowing Western Conference.

Great move by the Sixers. Gets us more cap room with another expiring contract and opens up more room I would think for Thaddeus in the rotation.

The pick is lottery protected. But I doubt if Utah goes on a major slump,so the Sixers will probably be getting anywhere from the 18th-25th pick in next year's draft.

No need to get racial here.If I'm not mistaken,Jason Smith,Shavlik Randolph,Louis Admunson, and Gordon Giricek are White.Giricek will give you basically the same thing Korver gave, which is three point shooting.Giricek just got caught up in a numbers game in Utah. And it gives the Sixers flexibility. Now if they do trade Andre Miller,I will be pissed.

I always liked Kyle but his 3-pointers were not coming in droves like they once did. He still has a hard time defending though had some steals this year. I guess the Sixers new guy is going to go full scale in trying to upgrade the team and that is great. Wish the Phils did the same thing. As to Gordon, well, money gone but I don't guess he will add much to the team. I like the additional pick though and perhaps Ed St will pick someone that King would not have.

Second thinking this, I think this is a horrible trade, cant believe it, the future is gone, the draft this year is a weak one. With comcast as owners this team will always be mediocre at best, time for a passionate owner, one with balls to take the team back to the glory days... last decent move this team made was bringing in Moses Malone

I think this move is ok...could be better depending on what they do with the pick and the cap space. If they plan to use the cap space to make another deal or sign a big-time free agent then this deal becomes alot better. Giricek is a better scorer than Korver but not as good a 3-point shooter, but he will be gone after this year anyway. The pick will be a late first-rounder and its always a crap shoot picking late in the first. I like the move because from what I hear about Ed Stefanski I think more moves are coming. Hopefully he can turn this team into a contender within the next few years. There is no excitement with this team now except for the occasional Iguodala highlight dunk.

If they move Miller and cut Ollie, cap space at the end of the year will now be around $22M. Agreed on the Billy King comment - he never would have made this move. Well done Mr. Stefanski. Also, doesn't hurt to take a flyer on an expiring contract in Giricek that does have the ability to fill it up.

Good trade! Congrats to Ed Stefanski for trying to make things happen.
Kover was shooting under .400 from the field and was only giving the team 10 pts. in his 26 minutes. His defensive skills were never good and his ball handling abilites were quite limited. You could never use him as a 2 guard and most other 3's are more athletic.
He was also one of Cheek's favorites, and that was interfering with the development of the other players, who are at least more physically suited to play the 3 and 4 spots.
This will give Young some more pt,and down the road make it easier to put in Amundsen, Randolph and Hill. At the very least we should be slightly taller!

I don't understand why all of these people are so upset about trading Korver, and receiving almost his clone, cap space, and a first round pick. Were'nt you guys tired of Mo Cheeks using him as a Power Forward. This means that Thaddeus Young will get more playing time, and possibly,Shavlik Randolph or Herbert Hill will be getting some playing time so this works out for both teams.Future rotation will be starters:C-Samuel Dalembert,PF-Reggie Evans,SF-Andre Iguodala,SG-Willie Green,PG-Andre Miller.Subs will probably be:C-Herbert Hill,PF-Jason Smith,SF-Thaddeus Young,PG-Louis William,SG-Gordon Giricek.I think once Willie Green gets healthy, then we'll see Rodney Carney minutes cut dramatically.

I love the trade because Thaddeus will continue to play and Carney can get an opportunity to prove himself with regular 10-15 minutes a game. Even though Korver got on my nerves i'm glad he will get to play on a playoff team.

Now that the SF spot is even clearer with the departure of Korver, and the future departure of Giricek, now the question is,what does the future hold at the SG spot for the Sixers.I would love for them to draft Chase Budinger out of Arizona. They'll be playing against Derrick Rose and Memphis tonight on ESPN360.com,so you'll see two future stars of the NBA.

Great trade.
KK's a good guy + great shooter, but an extra $5 in space + a pick + more minutes for Thad?
Also agree BK would not have made this deal.
Also agree another BIG deal is in the works (summer?).
Now just move Miller, Green + Carney............

Why even speculate what BK would have done or not done at this point? I betcha even with the new cap space, it'll be hard to get a "marquee" player next year who'll want to come to the Sixers. Kyle thanks for your sportmanship and dedication to the team. You are a class act and I wish you the best in Utah.

Great first step. Korver already lost the 6th man job to Lou and was taking too many minutes from Thad. He's probably thrilled to play for Utah, and he'll probably do well there also.
As others mentioned, this does look like the work of someone with a master plan, working the jab to establish the power shot. I was anxious to see what the first move would be, and this is reassuring - it accomplishes some good things without really giving much up. A late first round pick doesn't get you Beasley or whatever, but it sure as hell doesn't hurt. Throw in the extra cap space and we've got two more chips than we did yesterday and have removed any temptation to let Korver eat up minutes from the young guys we're trying to develop.
So a good first step. It will be interesting to watch this play out.
PS - i hope it means Thad gets all of Korver's 4th quarter minutes.

As long as the money is right, these players, especially the ones seeking their first pay day, will play anywhere. Why would'nt players want to come to Philadelphia, the 4th largest market in the country.Let's be honest, would'nt Josh Smith prefer to play in Philly,a big market and great party scene, rather than staying in Atlanta, and staying unhappy. So I would'nt be surprised if the Sixers land a marquee guy next year.

I hope Kyle K thrives in Utah. Moreover, the Sixers were going nowhere with him. His kind of game needs a contender. We are not yet that. More cap space is a definite clue that something BIG may happen and it may involve Andre Miller, who is a great player with some age who deserves a shot at a championship. It's ALL GOOD !!! (I hope I don't eat my words).

What's not to love about this trade. I believe that we receive a better player, plus, a future first round pick. I wasn't that high on Kyle Korver, although, I must say, he has a beautiful "J". However, I find him to be a very streaky shooter, and this year he is even more streaky than usual. Likewise, Kyle's floor game is very weak; he caused more problems on the defensive end than anybody else on the squad. I firmly believe that Gordon Giricek is a more consistent shooter, and will provide better defense than Kyle. I, also, believe that he'll make a positive contribution, and be in the rotation. It wouldn't surprise me if he beats out Willie Green, and becomes a starter.
I can't tell you how impressed I am with Ed Stafanski, this trade shows some creativity. I agree with the others who said that Billy King wouldn't have made this trade. He didn't have the vision required to make this deal. In my opinion, this trade shows that Ed really knows the league, (picking up an undervalued player, plus, a draft pick). I think he's going for the playoffs this year, and I believe he'll make it too!
Finally, we get the best of a deal with Utah, I was really tired of them ripping us off!

I'm OK with this. It's clearly step one in whatever plan Stefanski has. Like others have said, I'm anxious to see how Young, in particular, handles the additional time. And I've liked it when when Young, Williams and Smith are on the floor together. It's a bit of a roller-coaster ride, but it's the most athletic this team has been in a long time.
Going forward, I'd still prefer that Carney/Green get packaged, instead of Miller. I think this team will need his steady, veteran hand.
All the best to Kyle Korver, a class act who should do well in Utah and the Western Conference.

This is an excellent trade for the 76ers. To take a second-round pick with a one-dimensional game like Korver and turn it into an expiring contract and a future no. 1 pick is something that BK wouldn't have done in a million years.
BK considered Korver untouchable, one of his "finds". One reason he's no longer GM is because he overvalued his own picks. Another reason is because he was terrible at signing his own free agents to contracts, never letting the market set what they were really worth.
For those of you who think A. Miller isn't gone by the trade deadline, you aren't seeing the forest for the trees. Stefanski can get a decent package for Miller -- expiring contracts, a young player or another no. 1 pick -- and can even get someone to take another player off the 76ers hands (Carney, Willie Green?).
That would mean the 76ers could be looking at $20M in salary cap room, excluding the cap holds for Iggy and Lou Will. I'd have to give Big Ed an A so far on revamping this team.
And another plus to the deal -- Mo's BS lineup of Korver at PF at the end of the game is history. Could this force Mo to play Hill or Thad there instead at the end of games?
Philly fans, how does it feel to have a real GM in the house now? Big Ed definitely has a plan. I'm waiting for the next chip to fall.

Kyle will be missed by the Philadelphia Community. I know him personally and he is a great guy who is very giving of his time and money to the less fortunate kids in the city. This happens off camera all of the time and not just when in the spotlight!
He loves Philadelphia and understands our passion and he was one of us cheering for our fightin phils! Hopefully we will decided to keep his home here and return in the off season!
Utah, congrats in receiving such a fine young man.

Most of you guys really don't know the league do you? Korver has developed into an average one on one defender, and he's the best team defender we have outside of Dalembert. Even when Korver isn't hitting his shot, he's such a threat that he creates space for our pathetic offensive sets, the other team is always concerned with where he's at on the court. We no longer have anyone on the team that opposing teams are scared of as far as shooting from the outside. If we ever become a contender we will spend another 5 years trying to find an outside shooter to complete the team, you don't trade these guys.
Furthermore, the pick is a 2009 pick, not this years draft, that is protected. It has the same value as a high 2nd round pick in the coming draft, which is almost 0 value.
Billy King wouldn't have made this trade because it was a terrible trade. 28 GM's in the league wouldn't make this trade because you essentially traded away your only shooter and a 100% team player for $4 mil in cap space. Yeah great trade Ed. Even if you were going to trade him, he could have gotten more, as contending teams were dying to get Korver last year when everyone knew this team was rebuilding. To not get a single young player in return, and having no replacement for his role on the team is just moronic really.

Obviously, we're going to see how Giricek will do, but I like the trade. Hopefully, he'll provide the same things that Korver does. If he lives up to the European stereotype, we'll see everything Korver did - a player who can shoot the 3 and move well without the ball.
Also, if memory serves me right, I think Giricek has a better handle than K and can actually drive to the basket off the dribble.
I kind of disagree with everyone about Korver's defense. While he's always been slow-footed, Korver plays the wing of a zone defense just fine. He's always under control on defense, consistently in position, and was never afraid to take a charge. I don't every remember him costing us a game. But yeah, there's a reason why he should only be in the game every so often.
Sloan will find out he can be a liability if he starts going one-on-one with Shawn Marion, Kobe, or other big 3s but...I don't think he's dumb enough to let that happen.

Thank goodness Mr. Stefanski isn't fooled by the transparent mirage of the past two weeks. It's long past time to blow this team sky high, but Stefanski had better move fast if he wants to avoid the risk that the team might get a few more lucky wins and start to convince the gullible homers out there that there's something here worth salvaging. LIQUIDATE THIS GARBAGE PILE!

It was'nt Korver's fault that Cheeks used him as a PF.It was'nt Korver's fault that Cheeks played him 30+ minutes a game. Now that he is gone,Cheeks has no choice but to play Thaddeus Young, and Jason Smith,Extended minutes.Did anybody else notice last night that when the rookies were in for an extended period of time, they actually built the Sixers biggest lead, and when they were taken out, that lead dwindled.

I like Giri's game a little more than Korvers. The thing I'm not sure about is if he is as much a team player as Kyle is. Giricek loves to drive the ball. Something Korver could not do. He was willing, but did not have the tools. Giri is not a good defender, but better than Kyle one on one. He tends to go on his own on offense, but I like the trade. Gets Mo out of his late game blinders. I have not been in favor of all the minutes Korver was getting, but I was not blind to the benefits of having him on this team. I'd like to thank him for his leadership and effort displayed every game.
As for the BK bashing. I will not disagree with the contracts and some of the trades, but he did get Korver from big Ed for "only" cash. Even Ed says that the Sixers got the better of the deal. Now, someone BK got without using a draft pick turned into a first rounder for us. He almost got T-Mac for Larry Hughes for goodness sake. Toronto pulled out of the deal. Can we just let the BK thing go? It's a new day...
I look forward to the additional minutes for Young and hopefully Shav and/or Hill.
Even with the deal, I'll hold to my 38 win prediction.

Everybody read the line in Mr.Narducci's story:
"The pick can start in 2009 and the Sixers have seven years in which to make it. There are different protections for each year, according to Stefanski."
This means that they do not have to pick in 2009! If as everyone says the draft is weak in 2009 then they do not have to pick in 2009. This is a future bargaining chip or can be used to pick in years 2010 to 2015.
SO be patient. 2008 Unrestricted: Free agents are the following: Jermaine O Neal, Elton Brand, Corey Magette,Gilbert Arenas

Stefanski is a genius! He trades away the one outside shooting threat the team has so now opposing teams can really pack it in on the interior. The team will lose more games resulting in a higher draft pick next year, and Dre's productivity (and market value) will decrease allowing him to be signed to a bargain contract next summer.
Good financial planning, but bad team building.

FOR area95: sorry but none of those guys are unrestricted free agents, they all have opt-out options for the last year of there contracts.
Jermaine O'Neal: never going to opt out, he will make $20 million next year and his productivity is down this year, there's no chance he opts out. He won't get nearly that on the open market.
Elton Brand: due to make $16 million next year, and the clippers can make him a huge offer if they want to stay competitive. he is coming off a ruptured achilles and has not played this year. do you want the sixers to give him a 5 year $80 million deal coming off a ruptured achilles? i sure as hell don't.
Maggette: due to make $7 million next year, we could probably get him if he opts out. again are you willing to spend $8-10 million on an iguodala clone? doesn't make much sense.
Arenas: he prefers to stay in washington and im not sure he would choose to come here over washington since they are sure to offer him a max contract or close to it. really what's the attraction to philly for him? and does he even fit into the team. if we plan on building around Lou Williams at point, which we should, im not sure Arenas' style fits. he needs to dominate the ball and let others play off of him, and the perfect guy for that was just traded.
also having a draft pick that can be used 2 years from now to 9 years from now isn't exactly a great asset. not to mention Utah is a very young team, and that pick isn't likely to be better than 20 anytime soon.

I see why they call this city Negadelphia.I was on the ESPN.COM board, and all these Sixers fans are ready to jump off the Ben Franklin Bridge because they traded Korver. If you whiners knew anything about Basketball, you would know that Giricek gives you everything that Korver gave, with the addition of creating his own shot. And Stefanski said that the Sixers will have the most cap room next summer, which leads me to believe that they will work out a sign and trade, probably with Atlanta for Josh Smith. And for the last time, the Sixers in no way, shape,or form need Jermaine O'Neal, simply because he would demand an extension, and at this point in his career,he can't stay healthy.Same goes for Arenas. And why would you want Corey Magette on this team, when you have a younger, possibly better guy in Thaddeus Young on their team.

I honestly cannot see why anyone could be angry about this trade. We lost a significant outside scoring threat??? How many teams do you honestly think came into Philadelphia worried about what to do about Kyle Korver? Giricek gives us exactly what we had in Kyle plus the draft pick and more cap room. This was a trade that had to be made. It will help us develop our young guys, gives us more cap room to sign a marquee free agent and gives us a draft pick in the future. I love this trade and hope its a sign of good things to come.
