A must win game in early January? You bet if the 76ers want to turn around a season that is definitely headed south. The Sixers play a 13-20 Chicago Bulls team tonight at the Wachovia Center that might be the biggest disappointment in the NBA.
True confession – this reporter had Chicago facing Phoenix in the NBA finals this year.
Would you say we’ve been a little off with that pick?
Ben Wallace has been banged up and his skills have eroded quicker than expected.
Kirk Hinrich has taken a major step back this season.
Luol Deng is banged up and has missed the last two games with Achilles tendonitis.
And Chicago is coming off a home loss to of all teams, the New York Knicks (who appear to be battling with Miami for the second biggest disappointment in the NBA).
Anyway, with road games at San Antonio, Houston and Boston next week and then a return home to face a Toronto Raptors squad that is 3-0 against the Sixers, it doesn’t take deep thinking to realize that tonight is the Sixers’ best chance to win in a while.
And we know there are fans who hope they continue to lose so they will move further up the lottery trail. Young teams and players have to learn how to win and losing does none of the current players any good.
Plus, we are of that old notion that a professional team should try to go out and win every game. Again, not everybody agrees with that, but we still value winning over losing, even if it means not getting Michael Beasley.
Anyway, the Sixers will be leaving for the road with their heads down (not to mention a six-game losing streak) if they don’t beat the Bulls.
One can tell that the Sixers have lost confidence while losing five straight games.
Returning again to the road with a winning streak, even if it is only one game, would make a huge difference.
And that is why the Sixers have to face this game with even more urgency than usual.
A loss here and it’s anybody’s guess when that first win of 2008 will occur.

Aaron Gray will have no problem using his 7'1",280lb frame to bully his way past Jason Smith and Dalembert as the rookie has his first real breakout game against the Sixers.I'm looking for a final score of,Chicago97,Sixers 92.And btw,Willie Green stinks.

Slow day.....
I agree with most of this blog entry; except losing does no good and builds character. Most of these guys won't be here any way. Slammin' Sammy as you guys refer to him has had the taste of winning and the playoffs. 'Dre Miller if he is here, has had success. Iggy-who cares he is 3rd option and is what he is on a winning or a losing squad. Point being it is what it is. Look at all the worse to first stories out there they didn't need baby steps. Look at the Eagles all those baby steps and no 'ships. It doesn't matter, as Andy Reid says each team has it's own personality. It's up to whoever is coaching to instill a winning "attytood" in that years edition of the team, for example look to Jimmy Leyland of last years the Detroit Tigers.
We need a power fwd, why give up 'Dre? Tank and lets get the best one out there during the draft for the minimum. It's not rocket science. If Billy King wouldn't have been such a horses ass we would have Horford instead of 2 starting quality smalls fwds.
If BILLY "the would be" KING would have used used Larry Brown as a sounding board we would be talking about signing Iggy for 4 yrs 40 million based on his 3rd option status and bringing in a stud scorer this off season. We also would be drafting a point guard this yr that 'Dre would train.
In 2010
We would have startin line up like this
Said PG
Sweet Lou SG with Iggy getting 6-8 mins a game there. Plus using a draft pick to solidify.
Iggy/Thad SF
Horford PF
Dalembert C Drafting to solidify this position paying minimum.
Is it really that hard?
BLLY if you are reading your a JOKE!

Wow, a must win game hugh? Of course this is an attempt to sell tickets right? I rather hear your predictions on who and what this team needs. Come on be a GM for the next in-between games and tell us what you would do to this team now and for the upcoming season.

At least we're back to talking about basketball...all those trade fantasies are getting a bit old.
Im not saying they should tank, but i dont think the term "must win game" applies to a team that is obviously not going to make the playoffs anyway. I'm just looking forward to seeing them play at team at their level. The next week will be pretty ugly and probably not even worth watching, so enjoy while you can.
If they build the team responsibly it will probably be a while before they can compete at a high level. If they try to do it overnight(whether its overzealous trading or FA signings), it will be even longer before they can compete at a high level. Its tough to swallow but it is what it is. So in a game like this I'll just be happy with the fact that they have a shot, and take solace in the fact that if they loose it helps our prospects for the future. After all, youngDre's fits aside, Truth is pretty right on about almost everyone being gone by the time they're much better. Its kind of a necessary condition, actually.

Is it true Herbert Hill cured a crippled man this morning?

I disagree. I think this team is a few moves away from being a significant factor in the East.
1 - Clear up a little more cap room (Green, Evans) for small expirings.
2 - Sign Elton Brand. I know there are a lot of guys here who don't like Brand, and I cannot figure out why. He is not injury prone (this achilles thing was his first major injury), he's not old (unless 28 is old), he's a proven 20-10 guy (and a legit low-post 20-10, 50 percent from the field guy, not a C Webb 20-10 guy), and he's a defensive presence (over 2 bpg career).
Miller, Iguodala, Thaddeus, Brand, Dalembert would be a pretty good lineup in the East next year.

I've liked the Baby Bulls for a while now. But they are a flawed team in the post. Their offense is forced because of it, much like the Sixers, drive and kick. Also Hinrich is a poor excuse for a floor general. That's what they truly lack if they are gonna be a slashing and spot up team.
All that said, Bulls mash the Sixers tonight. Too much talent and a revenge game for them.
Herbert Hill is so manly, even Chuck Norris crosses the street when he sees him coming.

I just read that Mo Cheeks is considering starting Thaddeus Young at SF,and moving Iggy back to SG.This what I've been waiting for.Thaddeus and Iggy has the type of styles that compliment each other, and quietly Iggy is probably happy that Willie Green is being demoted to where he belongs, the bench.Even if the Sixers don't land Josh Smith, there are at least five in this year's draft, that would fit in nicely into what the Sixers are trying to do.On Nbadraft.net,they have a profile of this kid out of Rider named Jason Thompson, who they're saying is the best PF,that nobody has heard of.He's 6'11",245lbs,and they said would probably be a lottery pick if he was on a major team like Duke,North Carolina,or Syracuse. And there's another kid from Australia, who's 6'10",280lbs,and his nickname is baby Shaq.

Enough with hearing about Baby Shaq's...there's one in Greece for cheesesake.
Why is no one really talking about Jermain O'neal? He'd be the perfect fit for what we're trying to do. Has range, can post, good defender. He'd more than open the wings for Williams, Iguodala and Young.

Who knows if Brand will come back to the 20/10? That's why we question signing him. Do we even know when he will be back? Do we know that he will leave $16m on the table? Why do these questions keep getting overlooked? I hope he comes back as healthy as before and opts out. I will be on that bandwagon in a heart beat.
Jermaine O'Neal cannot stay healthy and he's making way too much money for a guy that injury prone. The season isn't even 40 games old and he's already missed 7 games. In his 12 year career he's only played more than 70 games 5 times. Every 5 games, he sits out? Not for $19m a year.

Injuries aside, I'd rather have O'neal. And that number isn't going to be that once he opts out. He and Brand will command similar salaries.
I read Brand is not slated to come back any time soon. And his injury takes a year to heal (no pun intended) then another for him to get back to normal. Ask TKO...it's a long process.
So Beasley aside, who I honestly consider more of a sf who happens to push around at the collegiate level (see Glenn Robinson), we're left with Josh Smith who seems to be a huge headcase.
Here's another possibility (not Herbert Hill related). If we're going young, let's go really young. Let's trade Dalembert and draft DeAndre Jordan. You want post presence, that kid has the potential of being nasty in a Dwight Howard type of way. Let's go with Smith at the pf and see if he develops. Or even go after Shawn Marion. There are so many options in this market that even a bad decision will turn out kinda decent for us.

I live in the ATL. AL Horford, who is an absolute stud, has made it clearly known he wants to play at the 4, not the 5. And what Al Horford wants, he's going to get.
The Hawks could have re-signed Josh Smith last summer for a reasonable amount. They are not going to give Smith the money what he wants when they have Horford at the 4 and Marvin Williams at the 3.
If the Sixers make a front loaded offer for Smith, the Hawks either won't match it, or more likley will try to work a sign & trade. I love Elton Brand, but he's got some wear & tear on his legs. Josh Smith is young and the best shot blocker in the world who's not a center. Yes, he makes too many boneheaded turnover including in crunch time, and has had some problems with his head coach. But he's a warrior.
He would make this a better team and sell some tickets too.
Maybe Marc can ask some scouts who they think would look best at the 4 for the Sixers: Josh Smith, Elton Brand, Ronnie Turiaf, Chris Wilcox, Nick Collison, Jeff Foster, etc., or the No. 1 of the next draft, Michael Beasley.
And enough with the smartass Herb Hill comments...give the guy some burn Mo, and see if he's a player or not.

I like both Elton Brand and Josh Smith but I think Josh Smith would definately be the more likely option. Who after a major injury turns down 16 million a season in a year with few teams with deep pockets? Though you never know in a league where Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor turn dopwn 55 million and Iguodala turns down 47. But my point is I agree with trackboy. Horford is their player of the future and being a very cost conscious franchise I think it is likely that Atlanta would part with Smith.
And please dear god Mo Cheeks start Thaddeus at Small Forward and move Iguodala to SG. That gives a taller lineup that also can be wicked fast off the break. (and gets rid of the cancerous growth that is Willie Green)

Tank the season, get rid of Willie Green ASAP. Sign Elton Brand and draft Eric Gordon. If you don't get Brand then draft Beasley. As far as Josh Smith that really becomes a choice of him or Iggy can't have both, need to stop with the redundant players on this team at that position.
