For a 76ers team that is 11 games under .500, there was an awful lot of talk after Monday’s practice about the playoffs.
As former Indianapolis Colts Jim Mora once famously said, “Playoffs, Playoffs?. We just want to win a game.”
First of all, the only reason the Sixers were talking about the playoffs was because the media was asking the questions. Those questions stemmed from the fact that entering Monday, the Sixers were just two games behind Indiana for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
Coach Maurice Cheeks says that making the playoffs is still the goal and the players said that if they begin defending their turf at home, that it’s possible.
Our response?
“Playoffs? Stop. Stop Stop.”
This is a Sixers team that has won three of the past 14 games and we’re supposed to seriously discuss the postseason, even in the watered down Eastern Conference?
Andre Iguodala had the best answer when asked if the postseason was a reality for the Sixers.
“We have to take care of these home games in the month of February and see what happens after that,” he said.
Good idea.
The good news is that the Sixers play seven of their next eight at home. The bad news is that they have an 8-13 record at the Wachovia Center this season.
There are many fans who don’t want to see the Sixers make the playoffs, thus giving them a better chance at one of the top draft picks from a talented college basketball freshman class.
Actually, allowing the young players to experience the increased intensity of the postseason would be great for the team’s development.
There we go, talking playoffs.
Stop!!!
Again, even in the Eastern Conference, at this point, discussing the postseason for the Sixers seems utterly preposterous
Could we turn the discussion into the prospect of the Sixers putting together a two-game winning streak?
The Sixers should have a major advantage when they return to the court Wednesday against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks.
Milwaukee has to play back-to-back games, including Tuesday night in New Jersey. And the Bucks will be without leading scorer Michael Redd, who is out with a left knee strain.
Before counting this one in the W column, remember that Redd missed Milwaukee’s most recent game with the Sixers and the Bucks still won, 87-83 at the Wachovia Center.
So the Sixers should take nothing for granted.
By the way, the Sixers haven’t won consecutive games since Dec. 22 – 29 when they had wins over Memphis, Miami and Sacramento, not exactly three teams that are vying for playoff position.
So before anybody starts a serious discussion about the postseason, get back to us after the Sixers complete a three-game road trip in four days at Golden State, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Clippers. That trip concludes on March 3.
If the Sixers are still within two games of the final playoff spot, then the postseason speculation will be kind of warranted.
For now, it’s extremely premature, as most fans and Jim Mora realize all too well.

I looked at the standings earlier and kinda chuckled. If they want to get there though, they would have to make a short-term move in order to do so, so I doubt it happens.

I hope they make a big time push at home - i don't know where the thought of losing is good comes from but the 76ers should try to win as many games as possible.
Why?
Because that allows your players to accumulate value relative to their contract status. Korver's space was created by developing an asset and trading it for the better of the team. Dalembert is playing himself into an asset now too, as are Williams, Smith and Young.
Young was a steal at 13. He's a top 7 player on a great team.

I don!t agree with tanking, but I do think we need a top five pick in this draft. If E.S. thinks A.Miller will have more value over the summer[his final contract year], I feel by trading A.Miller before the trading deadline he gains value just by the fact it will be harder for the team to win games this year.L.Williams has been tutored by DRE long enough.Lets see if he can run a team!!! You may actually hasten the development of the young players by trading DRE.They will have to make decisions on their own. You still have K.Ollie as an experienced backup.

The most ridiculous part of this whole equation is that if the Sixers still had their legitimate outside threat (Korver), they might be in the 7th or 8th spot as we speak. Bottom line, with zero outside threat, the Sixers have no shot at making the playoffs. I hope they do because I'm a huge fan, but I'm also a realist.
Additionally, Stefanski had better trade Andre Miller by the deadline. I'll sound the drum again and tell you that trading Korver created nothing more than an insignificant amt of cap space - it was done as a headline grabbing move and will prove to be a detriment to the team over the next few years. That said though, the real cap space will be created when Miller is finally shipped (Korver could have been kept and the same would have been accomplished). Also, they need to ship Andre now instead of in the summer so they can achieve a top 5 pick in the draft and have a shot at Eric Gordon or OJ Mayo to lock down a legit #2 for the next 10 years. If the deadline comes and goes with no move for Andre Miller, I'll say it again...Ed S. has failed MISERABLY.

I think last year we got burn't a little because we weren't even in the hunt for Greg Oden. But this year Greg is not there and it is important for us to win as many games as we can so that in the off season other quality players (I said quality) can be drawn to this team not just by our money. Hopefully other players who have a heart to play hard every night will see our teams comitment to playing hard and want to be apart of this. And maybe it will scare away the Chris Webers. Who knows maybe there are players out there who look at the Sixers and say that team can be alot better if I were on it. The league is young so there is alot of young productive talent out there. Right now it appears that we lost alot in the Allen Iverson trade, but wouldn't it turn to our favor if we got AI back (he is a free agent) along with a quality big man like my boy Chris Wilcox? OK maybe AI back is not a good idea, then let's persue Bibby, Yes let's.

The East is so bad, the sixers really do have a shot at the playoffs. 2 games out of a playoff spot. For any hope of getting out of the 1st round they would have to get the 6 seed. It's like nobody wants the 7 or 8 seed and who can blame them. Detroit and Boston aren't losing in the 1st round.

We have a really easy stretch running up to the trade deadline on Feb 21st:
Wed, Jan 30 Milwaukee
Fri, Feb 1 Orlando
Mon, Feb 4 @ Atlanta
Tue, Feb 5 Washington
Thu, Feb 7 Miami
Sat, Feb 9 LA Clippers
Mon, Feb 11 Dallas
Wed, Feb 13 Memphis
Tue, Feb 19 @ Minnesota
Wed, Feb 20 NY Knicks
9 of those 10 games are winnable... not that we are good enough to win more than 6, but that still likely puts us in the playoff hunt right at the trade deadline.
Our tough March schedule will return us to the lottery world, but I hope a little run now won't change Ed's long term focus in terms of the really big moves needed to reshape this franchise.
I certainly would not want Ed to turn down a good trade involving Miller just because he wants to keep our core together to amke a playoff run.

Dean, I think the loss of Korver was magnified by the fact that we had the toughest three week stretch of the schedule right after the trade. The team had no time to adjust, different rotations, roles, etc.We should get a better read in the coming weeks. It is a shame ,we will have to find a shooter off the bench eventually. Kyle!s younger brother was 6 for 7 on threes the other day in college. Would that be something if he replaced his brother 2 years from now for us.

the sixers have no shot at the playoffs. the sixers have no go to player. the sixers have no leader. e.s. is covertly tanking this season by trading korver and not playing gericek(who to me is a better all around player than korver).

Even if the Sixers somehow made it to the playoffs it wouldn't matter. They couldn't get past the first round. I was looking at NBA team stats the other day and noticed that the Sixers have the second worst offense in the entire NBA. I really don't know what I would do if I were Ed, but he has to do something. These games are just painful to watch.
He either has to make a real move before the trade deadline to make the team at least competitive, or just tank out the rest of the season and shoot for a good lottery pick.

This is a subject I have mixed emotions about. Last year like everybody else I had hopes of Greg Oden in a Sixer uniform...Shoot at least Kevin Durant...I even downgraded my expectations to a rugged Powerforward like Al Horford. But instead we got Thad Young. Not saying its a bad thing but we know what we are. We want instant gratification and we are willing to wait if we can see the Christmas gifts under the tree. Last year we were expecting a Bike wrapped up. What we got instead was a eretor set. Something we have to grow or build before we get to enjoy it. And right now it sucks. As we get over the disappointment of not having that bike. We begin to look at that gift we never play with out of boredom. And begin to see the possibilities in the gradual creative abilities in it. I still want a bike...(Early draft stud). But what if that erector set is all we are going to have as far as the draft. Too good to get an early pick. And too sucky to make the playoffs in the east.
It would be a bad thing for our team to just lose games to get a guy they "believe" will make the difference between just making the playoffs every year and one day a possible contender. Its hard to sell to fans who watch NCAA basketball that Beasley or Rose couldnt help us next year. But its also hard to sell to Iggy who is working his butt off to tank games in order to get a guy who might never even come. And even if he does get drafted will that translate into NBA success. Just think about how you felt in 95 when we drafted Jerry Stackhouse. It felt like We got the best player in the draft period. Over Joe Smith and even tho Mcdyess just killed our Penn team...IT WAS PENN!! Alabama was supposed to win mannnnnnn. And we all loved rasheed wallace but you know his mom didnt want him here. And rasheed never turned into the killer his talents should have made him. So really guys...I think the best for us to do is to root for our team to do the best that it can and let the chips fall where they may. The sixers are pretty entertaining. They might not win. But you know they will out work every team that play. Its been far and inbetween where i've seen a team not make the most of their roster like the sixers have. Thats why mo cheeks is doing a very good job. But the point is this...If they can make the playoffs lets cheer for them to make the playoffs. You never know what happens in the lottery. Orlando drafted Shaq in 1992 and missed the playoffs with an even 42-42 win loss record. In 1993 they won the lottery with the worst chance possible slot. Could have drafted Chris Webber but took Penny Hardaway. Shit that year we could have had Webber but the brass really wanted shawn bradley *cough*. All they kept showing us is that damned one handed dunk out of b.y.u. That same stankin dunk. But yeah anyway...Lets root for these guys to get in because this draft thing hasnt proven itself to be a sure shot at all. Lets reward our guys with positive thinking and appreciation for a work ethic that reflects our city...
One love

zeru, if that's right, then what I'm hearing is that the manangement has to go, and better talent assessing, more creative, strategically minded management needs to be in place. If Snyder and his protege don't understand, then it's up to Ed Stefanski. Give him a couple of years, and if he's not able to improve this team, bring in someone better. We can't get complacent about this and keep bad GM's for 7-8 years until we know this team is out of everyone's minds in the city. Ed's here now, so it's up to him to put together something worth watching within 2-3 years.

If a playoff push is in the future then so be it.
If not, then I'm willing to accept improvment from the young guys.
However...
I will expect significant improvement and a playoff spot next season. The team finally has the assets to get better over the off seasons and I fully expect for them to be much improved this time next year.

I'd love nothing more than this. We could really use a draft pick who can come in and start next year... and, ideally, that person should be a legitimate shooting guard. We already have Iggy and Thad, who are (or, in the latter case, will be) decent small forwards. We need a great shooter on this team and right now we don't have anything even close.

That rumor makes no sense for either team. Assuming the Nets trade Kidd, they will need a point guard, but why would they want Miller? If Jefferson & Kidd are gone then they would be re-building like the Sixers. They would also need to trade Carter because I don't see Carter and Iguodala starting next to each other... although right now Carter is playing the 2 and Iguodala the 3.

Trade Rumor - I wouldnt be surprised if the nets wanted miller in light of the Kidd thing(and the whole stefanski connection)...but were going to give up him AND dre for just richard jefferson? I think they need to sweeten the pot...especially if they want dre. I dont think we should give him up anyway, but if thats whats being considered we need to take them over the barrel for it. Whether or not you think they're stars, those are the two best players on the team.

An extremely important aspect of the KK trade was acquiring Utah's 2009 1st round pick, which now allows the Sixers to trade 1st rounders in three straight drafts, should the opportunity for a blockbuster deal arise.

Just read where portland may have interest in J kidd. They actually have what it takes to get him. 1 contract(Lafrenz(about 11-12 mil - 2 years) and young players(They have many stashed. For ex. Lafrenz, Jack, Webster, Frey, + ? for Kidd. That I believe would work. Portland would be ready to win it all next year with Oden, Aldridge, Kidd , Roy and Outlaw in that starting lineup.

Let's face it people. We're not making a second half run like we did last year. There is no chance we can compete the rest of this year. Eddie-sky will only receive draft picks for dre miller when he is traded anyways. Isn't that what most gm's do anyways?
I agree with KM. The sixers should just go out and sign that shaggy williams guy. Here's a thought-bring him in for a 10 day contract after the all-star break. This way we can see how he gels with iggy and sammy d. Some bloggers think he deserves the opportunity, so i'm on board also. Shouldn't the big question be:
Who's going to coach this team next year and what kind of players will he want?
A Jeff Van Gundy team should look a lot different than a Marc Iavaroni team should look a lot different than a Mike Fratello team etc. etc. etc.
What's this team's philosophy? And how are we going to get the coach and the players that fit that philosophy?

Art Mooney - Where did having all of those "extra" draft picks land the Sixers this season? They tried to move the 12th, 21st and 30th pick this season and couldn't even go up 7 spots to get Yi. Unless the draft pick is in the top half of the draft, it's generally pretty useless. Additionally, if the draft pick is in the bottom 10, it's actually a detriment to the team possessing it - teams must sign first round picks to guaranteed 2 year deals. It hamstrings a team a bit financially, especially when the same talent is usually available in the early 2nd round, where picks are not guaranteed anything.

He said that he has enough cap space already to make a move, and that simply cap space and a pick is not enough for Miller - he wants a young player with upside in addition to cap space. I love it!
Krover set the market and now Stefanski is telling the league that he needs to maximize Miller's value to let him go.
Miller is an asset, and Stefanski is going to get as much value as possible for him. This is a true wheeler dealer in action - see ya BK!
This is how you get better, by not trading your assets for .60 on the dollar, al la BK.

Look, talent evaluation can be hit or miss, we all know that. But this guy seems to know the trader aspect of the job as well. I mean, he started a successful mortgage broker business, so perhaps that carries over.
We all saw that, for the most part, Billy King couldn't trade his way out of a paper bag, and his contract signings were ridiculous to the point it seemed he was negotiating against himself.
I doubt we have the same problems with Stefanski, so we are already ahead of the game.

Shaggy Williams stats are out of this world........he was averaging a double double every time he stepped out on the court......his senior year he was slowed down by the influence of his friends and there bad habits.....Schadder and Botcho and him drinking every night of the week......he realized a little to late when his good friend Botcho did two things that could have end shaggy williams playing carrer..... one was he hit a school bus in the morning..... the story goes like this his boy botcho was drinking the night before and picked shaggy williams up for school, and he was backing up into a parking spot and pulled in so that the back of the car was sticking out into the road..... the people in the car made fun of him so he pulled out and from there they were hit by a 42 foot long yellow bus.......and the best part about that was in the trunk of botcho car were 3 black garbage bags that were filled with 40's and empty beer cans.....they had to find a place to hide the bags before the police showed up so that they did not get in trouble with the law........... and the other thing was botcho was picking up some 40's and back up into a telephone pole and took the door off...so shaggy williams could have a been a big time player but was alot of negative influence from his two friends schadder and botcho........but do not sleep on the man i hear that he is getting back in shape and running up at heights and he still has the game.....dropping shots all over the court........ I also heared storys about shaggy williams playing pick up games with his boys at the JCC and there were stories that he would run off 15 shots in a row and never would drop a game.............His boy schadder was to worried about drilling holes into his muffler to make it loud and hanging out in his tanning bed that he had in his house, along with playing with his dog....and did he love that dog.....and his mother hated it so she took his lifetime friend from him and had the dog put down schadder never recovered from that day it still haunts him........

Morty - Being successful in the mortgage business has nothing to do with managing an NBA salary cap. Playing the spread in interest rates isn't exactly transferrable to NBA talent evaluation. Sure, can Ed S. run an business - absolutely. But we're not looking for that - we're looking for someone to build a contending NBA team here.
As for trading Andre Miller, I hope Ed moves him and gets more than expiring contracts. In fact, I'm the one who suggested moving Andre and either Jason Smith / Carney to Denver for a package that included Najera's expiring contract, Steven Hunter, and young prospect JR Smith. The bottom line here is that he has to move Miller before the deadline - whatever he gets in return above and beyond expiring contracts is a bonus. Do remember though that Jason Kidd is now on the market and clearly will be the primary PG in demand moving Miller back to the 2nd spot.

Andre Miller and Jason Smith for Hunter, Najera, and JR Smith?
You just made George Karl's day if that one goes through. Najera would be a loss, not only because on his effort on the court but because of the jersey sales to Mexico. Smith coming home to Colorado could offset that. The real losers would be the Sixers because they'd get JR Smith, a fantastic talent with a 10 cent brain. He is a genuine dog.

If nothing else Ed is consistent. He said the same sort of stuff when he came on DNL a few weeks ago (or maybe they just replayed that same clip?) My impression is he wants to package Miller with Willie and maybe someone else over the summer to do a big deal. It would certainly work numbers-wise, and seems like as good a plan as any to me. The key to moving Miller having a bit of patience and waiting for the right deal, he is an asset with a fairly fixed value over time - thats where the business acumen comes in. To just move him now for the sake of moving him would be a terrible business decision. You must ride out temporary adverse market conditions (kidd) to maximize your assets in the long run.

Dean:
Business is business and there are certainly transferable skill sets. He still must prove he can do the talent evaluation side of the job, but I thought I laid out evidence why Stefanski seems to be doing a good job on the business end. I'm sure you disagree, but you haven't addressed that evidence.
You do realize that Andre Miller's contract expires in a year whether we do anything or not?
I don't necessarily mind your Gasol/ Dalembert concept, but your proposed Denver trade stinks.
Posted by Morty | January 29, 2008 4:11 PM
Posted on January 29, 2008 16:11
The point of moving Miller now is not "a terrible business decision." There are two of the best two-guard prospects in recent memory in this year's draft: Eric Gordon from Indiana and OJ Mayo of USC. If Miller is allowed to run the team for the remainder of the season, the Sixers will accumulate too many wins to have a legitimate shot of ending up in the top 5 in this year's draft.
What are our biggest weaknesses as a team? Overall production from both the 2 and 4 positions. By moving Miller now, you'll just about guarantee yourself a shot at either Gordon or Mayo (Gordon being the preference), and you'll have opened enough cap space to make a serious run at Brand / Smith in free agency. Even if you don't get one of those two players, $20M in cap space allows you a ton of flexibility re: trades.
In terms of the proposed Denver deal...the Sixers would receive back the expiring Najera contract AND a 1/2 season option on a young, talented player like a JR Smith who also expires at the end of the year. Before calling JR Smith "a true dog", remember that he should be a senior in college this year. They said the same about Jermaine O'Neal in Portland also after his 4th year.

Guys, the more I think about, I would move Dalembert in a package to get Pau Gasol. I think first and foremost, this team needs a low post scorer that can draw a double-team. Pau is that, a legitimate low post 20 and 10 guy who is only 27 years old.
I don't think Sam is going to get much better than what he is right now, a 12, 10, 3 blocks a night guy who doesn't have the basketball instincts to be a true difference-maker.
There are rumblings that Memphis wants to make some serious changes, so I'd offer Sam, Miller and Carney for Pau Gasol, Mike Miller and Kyle Lowry. Would any of you think this would be a good deal for the 76ers?
I know Memphis already has Conley and Navarro, but in Miller, they'd have a $10M expiring chip to move next year, a young player with upside in Carney and an athletic, defensive center to pair with Gay going forward.
Gents, what do you think?

I would trade Miller and Carney for a power forward simular to Karl Malone stile player
and maybe thow in Willie Green and make Lou Williams the point guard, get acouple early draft picks and we are on our way...
See that wasn't hard @all.

Dean:
If you can do a deal of the Memphis type you propose, that's something worth considering.
But you don't do a deal just to do a deal, that is what got BK in trouble.
By the way, for all your talk about draft picks, if we'd kept Korver like you propose, we would certainly have more wins at this point.

Wait. Am I crazy? Why in the world would Memphis want Dalembert for Gasol?
One player is good. One isn't.

i usually post as whatthehell but the last few comments on this board are mind boggling in their stupidity..marc actually address my post in his columns 2 times so i know what im talking about..the problems with the sixers are prety easy to solve but not with the retarted no chance trades im seeing on this board
they need a shooter to spread the floor(a guy like hmmmm kyle korver ),they need a big who can catch a pass..sammy should be called hands of stone not roberto duran....and evans is 1,000,0000x worse..they need willie green to stop shooting his below average mid range shot and for andre miller to stop taking more shots to try to play his way outta town..id have no problem with him taking alot of shots if he could actually shoot...and lou williams will never bhe a true PG..and i love the kid but its just not his style of play..also id love to see thad fill out and play more 4...mo actually showed he does have a clue and gave him a few starts recently ,good day all
