Win Over Heat Was No Breeze

This is another one that we’ll spare the analysis. The Sixers won a game they simply couldn’t afford to lose with Thursday’s 101-84 victory over the visiting Miami Heat.
For long stretches, it wasn’t very pretty. The Heat were within five points with just over nine minutes go when the Sixers finally went into overdrive.
There are some who will try to downplay the win, suggesting that the Sixers just beat a team that is now 9-39 and has lost 21 of the last 22 games.
Remember, it wasn’t that long ago when the Sixers were one of those teams that the opposition was embarrassed to lose against.
Things turn quickly in the NBA, but the key is that the Sixers won a game they absolutely had to win. And they play two more similar teams before the all-star break – the Clippers on Saturday and Memphis on Wednesday.
A pessimist would suggest that the Sixers allowed a depleted Heat team, without starting forward Udonis Haslem (sprained left ankle) and newcomers Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, to stay in the game way too long.
An optimist would point out that the Sixers won the game and in the NBA that is all that counts.
Actually, the Sixers will have to play better if they want to win games against formidable or even mediocre competition.
Still, it shows improvement when it is suggested that the Sixers can’t take any opponent for granted.
The Sixers have won two in a row and are looking for their first three-game winning streak since earning three victories from Dec. 22-28.
The teams back then?
Memphis, Miami and Sacramento.
Those were teams at the time the Sixers had to beat.
So while the most recent win over Miami was far from a masterpiece, the Sixers must now go no less than 2-1 in their next three home games against the Clippers, Dallas and Memphis.
And remember, Dallas will be playing the second of back to backs after being in New Jersey the night before.
Could it be 3-0?
Don’t get carried away, but some momentum before the all-star break would give the Sixers some optimism as they get ready to compete over the final two months of the season.

Trackboy1:

Wow, the 6ers outscored the Heat by 16 pts. when Carney was in the game tonight.

Matt M. :

I'll admit, I've never been a huge Carney fan but he's shown flashes of his potential with the consistent minutes and when we are running a lot. We'll see how the season plays out. Shoring up the 3-point defense should lead to more long rebounds and more opportunities to break, which will only help him out further.

BB:

It's time to start Carney now that his confidence is up. He has been dreadful to watch (save the last two - three games). If he can continue to play the way he is playing the entire team will benefit and win more games thus allowing them to learn how to win.

Even though they played a bad team, it was good to see them pull away at the end. Some encouraging signs on the team are: Thad getting more and more comfy as a starter - invaluable! Evans energy off the bench, Carney's confidence, Iggy raising his game at the end of the third and entire 4th, Cheeks making smarter decision with the lineup after figuring out what he can use and what he can't on that bench.

I'm neither for nor against them making the playoffs, just want them to continue to learn and it seems as if they have been doing that the last five games. As much as Marc likes to tell us to not "get carried away", the reality is that this team has a real chance of grabbing that final spot. The Orlando game they should be proud of themselves while the Atlanta game they need to be angry at themselves. It's a part of learning and they will be better for it in the end. Especially if they make it to the dance and get swept, which I would love for the youngsters development!

Statman:

The best thing about Carney's game tonight was that he made an impact on the game on the defensive end when his offense wasn't working. For the second straight game, the Sixers went on the game-clinching run with Carney in the game, wreaking havoc with both blocks and steals.

If Carney continues to play consistent defense at that level, I would give him the majority of minutes at shooting guard instead of Willie Green, who is too short and slow to bother most shooting guards. Neither of them can hit an outside jumper consistently, so I'd rather have the better defense of Carney. Remember, I was the first one on this blog calling for Thad to start at power forward (which has worked out quite well), so I'll be among the first to call for Carney to start.

I've also been impressed with Reggie Evans' ability to disrupt other teams' point guards (at least the backups) when the Sixers go into the press. With fewer minutes, he's actually playing decent defense. With heavy minutes and playing against starters, his lack of footspeed gets exposed. Thad really moves his feet well on D, and in time I think he'll be a very good defender against the best of power forwards.

Marc mentioned that the Sixers catch Dallas on the back end of a back-to-back on Monday while they themselves have a day of rest. It turns out the Sixers' next three games (Clippers, Mavs, Grizzlies) are all like that. Hopefully they can continue with their good defense and catch these teams tired. Who knows, they might be in the 8th spot by the All-Star break ...

Joe Doc:

I've herd and read rumors that ATL wants a C and PG. So lets give them both! This works as far as salaries.

Atl gets:
Miller
Dalembert
Green
Booth

Phi gets:
Smith
Lue
Wright
Johnson
Pachulia
Claxton
1st round pick

Atlanta gets there PG and C. And gets rid of Claxtons contract.
Philly gets Smith, a OK C, and more expiring contracts.Do the trade soon(or make it a 3 team deal) and Ed then has those expiring contracts to go get a good player from teams that are looking to clear cap space. Maybe send Lue, Wright, and Johnson to Memphis for M. Miller. I could handle a team that has this starting 5:
PG-Lou Will
SG-M. Miller
SF-Iggy
PF-Jo. Smith
C -Pachulia
with Young, Evans, Ja. Smith coming off the bench. Plus who ever they draft and sign with the cap room they would still have. They could go get a top C and put Pachulia on the bench. Or use him in a sign-n-trade since he only has next year left on his contract. Instant contender in the East!

Joe Doc:

Oh yea! And I'm willing to eat Claxton's contract because we have the room, he could come back and his salary goes DOWN each of the next 2 years.

Joe Doc:

I'm sorry. I meant Anthony Johnson in the trade above, NOT Joe Johnson. Just in case anybody was confused.

datruth4life:

Guys, let me play pessimist for this entry. If someone offer Big Ed a decent package for Miller, I would rather trade him, get the cap space and no. 1 pick and let this team finish higher in the lottery while letting the kids play.

I don't want to follow this fool's gold of trying to get that eighth spot and blowing a chance to really improve this team with cap room, a higher lottery pick and a chance to get another first round pick.

Though the team won the game, I was beyond bewildered that Mo only played Jason Smith 9 minutes and Sam about 20 minutes. I mean, you have two seven-footers on the bench and you still play your small ball, with Reggie Evans at center? I guess Mo just can't help himself when it comes to small ball.

Thad gives the team legitimate production from the 4-spot, which helps gives this team some balance. He is still a 3 playing out of position at 4, but this will only speed up his development. I liked the competition going back and forth between Carney and D. Wade. Carney's dunk on Wade was vicious. Wade got him back, but it wasn't as nasty as Carney.

It seems Carney has figured out how he can stay on the floor. Just be a disrupter and rebounder on the defensive end and run the floor. The good thing is that he showed he can hit the 3 from last year, so it is still there. He just has to find it again, as well as an offseason working on his left hand, ball handing and shooting.

Evans is far better off the bench as a rebounder and energy guy. I wonder if Willie Green would be more effective off the bench as well.

Again, I don't want any more fool's gold. Let's get the best deal for Miller that we can and move this team forward. If not, then let the kids play and see what we can do this summer.

sixerzguy:

BB,

Were we watching the same game? Mo's substitutions were horrible! There was no rhyme or reason to his rotation last night. Starting Thad, developing LouWill, improving Carney, he gets kudos for that. But the in-game stuff is still gruesome to watch. Thad's only played 21 mins this season at small forward. 21!!! Are you kidding me?!? He's played well at PF, but I'm in agreement with almost everyone on this board that we need a more prototypical PF, and a good one at that. How about getting Thad used to his future role with this team? At best, Thad should be getting spot minutes at the 4 spot, not the lion's share.

I'll tell you what's gonna happen in the playoffs. We're gonna play Boston/Detroit real close in almost every game, but we won't win more than 1, and that's not because of our talent level, it's because Mo's gonna make about 5 ridiculous decisions per game akin to playing Korver at the PF spot late in games. He's going to be using his so-called "gut", so watch out Boston, here comes Mo and his gut!

Phil Jasner: "Mo, I love your gut, it'd be ashame if we didn't re-sign you, what would we do without your gut? If there's any justice in the world..."

Mo: "Well, Phil, I'll tell you what, gut is all you need. That thing up here, your brain? Overrated. No need to use that at all when it comes to coaching. That's been the secret to my success."

Last tidbit: Iggy's game wasn't that good last night, despite the box score. To me, it looked like he was just padding his stats, getting ready for contract negotiations. Another clue? He never fails to mention how young and inexperience this team is, and that they need to learn more. Roughly translated, "Pay me."

sixerzguy:

Joe Doc,

You mentioned trading with Golden State in the last post, and it gave me an idea.

Do you remember what Pat Riley did a few years ago with Elton Brand and Lamar Odom, who were playing for the Clippers at the time? He offered both big contracts, which forced LA to decide between the two of them, because LA wasn’t going to put up big money for both. LA chose Brand, the Heat got Odom.

I think the Sixers should do the same thing with GS. They should target both Azubuike and Monta Ellis. GS wouldn’t pay both, would they? It doesn’t matter who you get, at least your shooting guard position is upgraded.

However, I don’t think the Sixers should do the same with Atlanta, offering contracts to both Childress and Smith. I’d be too scared ATL would match the Smith offer, leaving us with Childress, which would clog up our SF slot.

Dean:

I'd love Monta Ellis on this team.

In terms of the minute dispersion last night, I disagree with you DaTruth. Sam had 4 fouls midway through the 3rd qtr and never saw the floor after that. He was on pace for around 33 minutes, if you extrapolate his time out to the end of the game.

I think Mo did a great job last night. They had a couple of very easy baskets out of timeouts (which is what we're looking for), and I think he understood that Reggie was playing possessed, so he left him in there. I have no problem with his coaching last night, and I think he did a good job overall.

steve-o:

Marc - what is all this "must go" 2-1 talk? We know these guys can beat the lower tier teams. So what? Being in a battle for the "8" spot is a joke. Let's focus on Lottery and Cap Space.
Repeat after me, losses are wins!

suede:

Dean, If we address our p.f. position in the draft, and G.St. loses M.Barnes ,Azubuike and Pietrus a sign and trade of Iggy and the Utah pick for Ellis and Bellininni could work. Iggy is a pretty good 2, but I think he is a natural 3.Nelson likes versatile players, and Davis is do to be resigned. You would have your Korver type back off the bench.

nutzonyachin:

steve o,

totally agree with the losing, it ruins my night when this team wins. i think i root harder for the sixers to lose than the flyers to win and i'm a bigger hockey fan. this team just doesn't have enough talent and will have trouble acquiring enough to truly compete for a title without getting a very good player coming out of the draft

TormentedInBeantown:

I couldn't agree with BB more. Granted the playoffs are a reach, and in this conference, not a monumental task, but it will be far more benefical for the team to come together, reach their potential, gain experience, acquire a taste for winning and battle for a spot than to hope for a draft day savior. If they do those things, the team becomes a more attractive destination for free agents and the trade value of the individual players increases.
In short, support this team and its current roster rather than clamor for upheaval.

BB:

Why would anyone want to lose on purpose?!? It's more important to create a winning culture then to get a good draft pick. What if Love turns into the next Darko? What if Mayo turns into the next Isaiah Rider? Look at the Cinci Bengles, they have gotten great picks for years before they finally became a "decent" team. And now their losing ways have resurfaced. Losing is a cancer! I could never support a team who wants to lose. You can't just say that you want them to play hard but not win, that's not how it works. If you play hard you are bound to win your share of games. That's why I wouldn't be surprised at all if they get that last playoff spot. Jkidd wants out of Jersey, Jermaine O'neal may be out the rest of the year. To me it's not a stretch they make the playoffs, the prospects are real!! It's always more important to win than to lose. Losing should never be an option. Thank goodness the players don't think the way we do, or they would all be out of work at seasons end.

TormentedInBeantown - "If they do those things, the team becomes a more attractive destination for free agents"

Great point my friend!!!

rzzzzz:

This team got on a real roll just about the same time last year, enough to get a sniff at the last play off spot. How much did that confidence translate to the start of this year? Despite their unfortunate selection spot in the draft, they didn't do so bad, but getting a real blue chipper this summer might do wonders. Play the kids, and if they still win, then it's all good.

Dean:

Listen, I have a tough time rooting for the 8th spot also, but it's so hard to root against your team. I go to pretty much every game and find myself cheering and hoping that they win night in and night out. Our job as fans it to support who's on the team, WHILE WE ARE IN THE ARENA. Outside of that, we can banter ideas back and forth and so on.

With that said, it is Mr. Stefanski's job to take the emotion out of this whole thing and do what's best for the long-term future of this team. Long-term (and I've made my feelings well know on this), it's best for this organization to free up cap space and get a high draft pick. Did you see Eric Gordon last night in the Indiana-Illinois game? Jesus, that guy was ridiculed, his family was attacked by the Illinois crowd. And how does he respond as a 18 yr old freshman? He drops 18 on Illinois in the 2nd half and hits a 3 with 25 seconds left to help his team win.

That's the kind of guy I want on this team. A stone-cold killer at 18 years old. A guy who can rip it in hostile conditions, a cornerstone of the franchise. Enough with the marginal player ideas. I want a stud rookie shooting guard (Gordon or Mayo) and a stud FA power forward (Brand). We all know how that is achieved...trading for cap space.

nutzonyachin:

all that winning last year sure helped this team. gosh we might be a lowly .500 team if we didn't go 17-9 to end last year. thank god thad slipped to us and BK was smart and patient(not good for him) enough to take him.

to go from being a bad team to a good team in today's nba requires a little bit of everything: good personel evaluations and signings, smart trades, good coaching, chemistry, etc. but being a middle of the pack team in today's nba means thats just what you are and just where you're likely to stay unless there are extenuating circumstances (ex. Shaq wants to live in LA, Detroit makes the best series of draft picks, signings, trades, and coaching hires in the history of the league......)

Its just so so difficult to become a team with a real shot at a title unless you draft someone special and those guys are usually high draft picks (ex. tim duncan, dwight howard, deron williams, chris paul) Even stoudamire and marion were picked right around 9. You still have to make the right picks but you also need the chance to.

and talking about attracting talented free agents...they'll be likely to come here if they see a good young nucleus of players about to peak, not neccessarily a team that wins the most.

suede:

I disagree about this current group growing by making a playoff run. If A.Miller and W.Green are not part of the future, than move them and let the young players that are part of the future make that run. Orlando, Cleveland, Washington and Atlanta are all in the playoff hunt.If we give Atlanta A.Miller in a trade it may come back to haunt us; they could make a run deep into the playoffs and decide to resign J.Smith.If Washington won!t include Blatche in a deal and won!t trade Arenas [2 guard?] they are not an option.Cleveland just doesn!t match up with us. Everybody has an Orlando trade proposal, but I don!t trade A.Miller unless I can a] move W.Green b]get a #1 c] get a young player back d] clear cap space if possible ; as Sixer fans we really should hope for Orlando to go on a bad run in the next 2 weeks, if so they may go for the following proposal [A.Miller,W.Green and Utah pick for Garrity( not playing), Augustine(not playing),Reddick(hardly playing), Arroyo and Orlandos #1. Morty, I know E.S. feels A.Miller will have more value after the season but I find it hard to believe that we could get more than a young player,#1 and cap relief. By the way, with the outside shooters Orlando has W.Green could help Orlando with his penetration to the basket.

nutzonyachin:

a trade proposal

it doesn't need to be blatche suede

I do think we can get what ed wants somewhere though and i agree with what he wants for miller

guys please let me know what you think of miller to wash for nick young and this years #1.

we get another draft pick and a young player who should develop into the fine outside shooter and scorer we so desperately need

the wiz get a true point allowing arenas to shift to 2 and don't have to give up anything significant off this years team. this lineup would give them a very impressive lineup and give them a true chance at a deep playoff run and maybe title.

unlike some trades proposed this seems to work really well for BOTH teams. I understand about the salaries and realize other players would have to be included but is this trade workable with these players as the principles and do you fellas like it

suede:

I like it but it seems Washington has to either move Arenas or resign Jamison. Earlier in the year I actually thought we took the wrong Young in the draft, with N.Young here Iggy could!ve stayed at the 3 ,

BoomDizzle:

We would all love a high draft pick that would turn into Beasley, Gordon or Rose, but you can't plan your moves around getting draft position. The lottery could mean the worst team in the league drafts in the 6th spot and a team finishing 7th or 8th out of last could draft in the top 3.

suede:

Thats true Boomdizzle, but we could possibly drop out of the lottery; that is the scary thing.Again, last years late season wins were nice at the time, but we got lucky, it seems, with Thad at #12.Do we get lucky at 14,15,or 16 this year again? I hope we don!t have to find that out.

nutzonyachin:

worst team in league cannot finnish below 4

i know its a gamble and i'm not planning anything until we get the player (good thing the draft is before free agency)

i just want to increase our chances at a top 3 pick and if not(which is likely) we still end up getting a very good-maybe great-player at 5 or 6 if we make the right choice

nutzonyachin:

sooooooooooooooooooooo lucky with thad it looks like. the one thing BK could do was draft

Praveen:

The Nick Young for Andre Miller deal is interesting (obviously, you'd have to throw other players in to make salaries match up) in that yes, it is one of the few proposals that really seems to help both teams. So kudos on that. But...

You're forgetting about ego. Specifically, Arenas' ego. He has said for a long time that he wants to prove himself as a "scoring PG", so I don't think that trading for Miller works for the Wizards. That would be like admitting that Arenas is a poor distributor (which he kind of is), which would not be a good idea for Wizards management if they want to keep their star past this year.

Also, as far as what the Sixers would get in return, I don't think another swingman is the solution. I'm starting to see a logjam developing at that position with Iguodala, Thaddeus, Carney, etc. Unless we plan on playing a Golden State-style lineup (1 PG, 3 SG/SF, 1 PF/C), swingman shouldn't be the Sixers' focus. I say go small or go big. Get a young point guard prospect in return for Miller or in the draft (Lawson, Augustin) or go after a true power forward (Love, Arthur).

I'm pretty conflicted as far as the Sixers' present standings. On some level, I want them to win because there is definitely something to be said for a team when they experience the big moment and surge to make the playoffs. But what good does it REALLY do to make the playoffs as the 7th or 8th seed and get MAULED by Boston or Detroit in the first round? You guys were talking about a winning culture when you argued in support of making the playoffs...how do you develop that culture when you're obviously going to get embarrassed in the first round?

While I agree that you shouldn't hang your hopes on the "draft day savior," my personal opinion is that if you're not making a run (for the championship, not the playoffs), you should be focusing on the future.

suede:

Nutz., Don!t think Wash. gives up Young and a #1 but if they did, Sixers would have to take back E.Thomas to make it work[3 yrs. left]

suede:

Praveen, I think moving Iggy back to the 3 and bringing a pure 2 into the mix[outside shooting] would be a good thing. Thad is only 19; having him play off the bench [same minutes] would!nt hurt his development. I think we need outside shooting as much, almost, as a low post threat.

What is your favorite Mark Zumoffism?
http://reclinergm.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/zumoffisms-top-10-quotes-from-the-sixers-play-by-play-man/

2-game winning streak. But I don't see the Sixers making a run. They beat the worst team in the NBA last night without their new additions. I think this team has some talent, but they lose close games and blow leads becuase of their youth, inconsistent team defense and lack over good overall talent. This team is playing for pride and I like that. We don't want them getting used to losing or thinking its ok. But the real Sixers won't be assembled for another year.

Brian :

Philly Gets:
Dwayne Wade
Ricky Davis

Miami Gets:
Andre Miller
Samuel Dal
#1st rounder this year

Salaries work...Ricky D is expiring. D-Wade has an injury that people question if he'll ever fully recover from. It would be pretty fun going small, although highly unlikely to ever happen for sure. It's just that some part of me thinks Ed is going to do something big this summer like this, something no one is expecting. Similar to when he got Vince Carter for the Nets (he likes proven stars). Our pick is going to be worthless to us this year anyway, you're delusional if you think its even going to be in the top 10, these guys are going to win games down the stretch sheerly off of out hustling tired old teams like the Wizards and the Nets.

PG - Lou Williams
SG - D-Wade
SF - Andre Iguodala
PF - Thad Young
C - FA (Josh Smith/Elton Brand)

Would anyone like this if it happened?

BoomDizzle:

I'm sure Pat Riley would jump at the opportunity to trade his team's best player, a young stud SG, for an aging PG and an average starting big man.

I can't even believe this team is even being mentioned in the playoff race. I think a very tough March schedule should keep us in Lottery territory, though.

Brian :

He's clearly not that much of a stud bro.

Theo:

I'd much rather build a time machine, go back to 1985 and bring back Jordan. It's only slightly less plausible than getting D. Wade out of Miami for nothing.

BoomDizzle:

Come on, man. He's got career averages of 24-5-6.4 and 2 steals per game, plus an NBA Finals MVP under his belt already.

nutzonyachin:

Brian

absolutely hate the d wade idea but I agree completely about stefanski making a blockbuster move that comes outta left field and it scares me

nutzonyachin:

i don't trade big for small, i don't give up youth when the team isn't ready yet anyway, and i don't like wades attitude right now--not one player on the sixers accepts losing and gives less than 100% the way he is. everyone wants this winning culture to develop and while i agree that wade is special i'm not sure he's mentally tough-maybe i'm wrong

bottom line is i really don't see how giving up that to get wade really makes this a better team in the long run

i seem to be in the minority here though

suede:

The only left field move I wouldn!t mind trying [not J.Oneal, gets hurt to much] would be Z.Randolph because if Brand is not an option and we don!t get a p.f. in the draft, than he gives us, on the court, the 2 most important things we need;#1] 20 to 25p.p.g. scorer and #2] low post threat. But E.S. would have to get a thumbs up from Mo, who coached him when he was part of a 50 win team.

Dean:

Would the Knicks trade Zach Randolph for Andre Miller and Willie Green? I don't know - that's a good question Suede. NY clearly doesn't have a starting PG now that Marbury is out of the picture, and Miller would be a great option for the next 2 years to tutor Nate Robinson. Also gives NYK cap relief in 2009 when Miller comes off the books.

Randolph has had issues in the past with his character, no doubt. But he's only 26, is a career 19 and 10 a game guy, and he clearly fills the low-post presence so desperately needed on this team. Stefanski and Cheeks have to decide though if they think Randolph's production is worth some of his behavioral issues and whether or not it's worth taking that risk.

nutzonyachin:

j oneal is an interesting player. i don't like him for this team at all even though on the surface he seems to be a good fit...and a free agent. too old and too injured, agreed there suede. one thing people don't often mention is that even though he has many hard to find qualities and very few weaknesses one of those weaknesses is he's a terrible (and i mean terrible) passer. I know he will make the sixers better and is the only legit low post threat that we know will be available and we don't have to give up anything i still don't want him. I'd be dissappointed but not totally surprised if ed signs him given all our cap room and serious defeciency in the low post

Tyler:

There is no way I would want Zach Randolph on this team. He's a locker room cancer and Portland has been much better off with him out of the way. He would certainly bring an increase in production but there is no way that I would want to bring him, his salary and his baggage into this team.

nutzonyachin:

a player i am intrigued by and would not mind at all is the kid outta oklahoma, blake something. someone on this board mentioned him a few weeks ago and i had my eye out for him. saw him vs. oklahoma state and couldn't believe what i saw. he has really good post moves-very polished. what truly amazed me though was his passing. no joke he single handedly destroyed okie state with only his passing out of the post-completely controlled the game....totally demoralized the defenders who had no answers. i've never seen a big dominate a game with only his passing like that. i'm drooling over the prospect of the sixers being able to aquire him. don't know what his weaknesses are. anyone have more info on him...is he coming out this year........where is he expected to get drafted.

k love looks like a great option too. not sure he fits the sixers style (not athletic enough) but i'd love to have a chance to nab him either way.

nutzonyachin:

please no zach randolph. not a winning player

see ricky davis, jason williams(Mia), vince carter, starbury, sam cassell, tracy mcgrady, eric lindros, matt leinhart.....the list goes on and on. i want to win, not watch how talented my players are

suede:

Dean, it would be addition by subtraction for the Knicks because Lee, who everybody in N.Y.wants to start, fits better with Curry because he can play away from the basket.Plus, the reason Sacramento did the Webber deal with us was they thought it would be easier to move multiple smaller contracts than one big one. I don!t think it is a problem for the Knicks. If there is doubt, it would be from the Sixers side. If we have enough character guys around him, and the fact we are bailing him out of a bad situation, you would hope this would serve aqs his wakeup call.

Theo:

Chances are Blake Griffin will stay at least one more year in college. Purely because if he stays he's almost a lock to be a top 5 pick next year. Also he picked Oklahoma cause his brother plays there. So I can seen him sticking around an extra year to play with his brother one more year.

Then again he could have an amazing tournament and he could declare this year. It often happens. Look at Jeff Green last year. He was all set to go back for his senior year, then had a great tournament and went in the top 5.

Dean:

It's definitely something to consider, but a hugely risky move.

suede:

Delembert will be 28, Iggy 25 next year.B,Griffin is a top 8 pick if he comes out this year. I am not crazy about Randolph either, but if we don!t get Griffin, Love or Beasley or Brand is not an option than we can!t wait till 2010 to address our p.f. position. A left field move may have to be made.

sfw:

nutzonyachin, forgot big dog robinson & CWEBB AND Speaking of draft position, I believe the 6th man in a 5 player draft, Sharone Wright.

Rick:

You have to be nuts to want the Sixers to make the playoffs! They are clearly not good enough to beat Boston or Detroit, or anyone coming out of the West Coast.

This team is in danger of making the playoffs and that would be bad for the future. Unless they can get a stud PF for Miller, Booth and Giricek right now, they should go for a lottery pick and market Giricek by playing him.

They have no post-up game and cannot win against teams with a good half-court defense. Why do you think the Sixers see zone all the time? Teams know they can't shoot from the outside consistently.

No post presence means the Sixers can't compete. All they can do is work with the pieces they have, clear cap space and get a high draft pick.

You can't depend on the teams ahead of us in the East to stay ahead. NJ is tanking and so is Washington, Atlanta is barely better than us (if at all) and Indiana is falling apart. It will take will for the Sixers to loose enough to get into the lottery.

They have a great young nucleus and an oversupply at the 2 spot. They need another 4- That Young is a great talent, but he is a 3. They also need a front line Center, so they can bring Sam off the bench.

Then, maybe they can contend for a title, but until they get those pieces, a lottery pick is the best way to get them.

TormentedInBeantown:

Nothing to gain by making the playoffs?

Last year about this time, the popular view of Golden State was about as low as the Sixers are now. However, thanks to a late season surge they snuck into the playoffs and brought down the Mavs. Now they are a respectable team, 9 games over .500 and on the upswing. Heck, even Chris Webber considers it an attractive destination (and NO, I do not want CWebb again!) Fact of the matter is that winning breeds success. It gives you control of your situation. By losing, you're putting your future in Luck's hands.

sfw:

we really just need a 20+ point presence in the lineup whether it's at the 1, 2 or 4 positions. Also, some tightening up of the defense. If a perimeter 20+ scorer is acquired(draft or trade) then a post presence must be found. Doesn't need to be a dominant post guy.

If a moveup is required to get a big time sure thing talent in the draft(like the Indiana guard), Lou Will could be used to move up a few slots to get him.

suede:

If being tied for the 8th playoff spot [Golden st.] is what we are striving for, than I apologize for dreaming.

nutzonyachin:

thanks for the info on griffin everybody........only seen him once but completely fell in love with him

and thanks sfw.....hehehe, i was hoping someone else would chime in with a few big dogs that i missed

nutzonyachin:

and by the way sfw, i saw your movie and thought it was horrible-could barley sit thru it

any idea where my handle comes from (hint-pop culture, around same time as your movie-'93 i think

nutzonyachin:

beantown,

winning may breed success in the nfl where teams are so close to each other but in the nba teams really do have significant gaps in talent and the teams without enough are never better than average. again, what did all that winning last season do for the sixers this year. i understand where your coming from and agree that theres something to it but the sixers aren't ready yet for winning to matter-just not enough talent and not enough members of the 2010 sixers on this current edition.

by the way, can we have our superbowl now that its proven you guys can't win without cheating

sfw:

nutzonyachin, too funny. they are actually my initials. don't know if I saw the movie(sfw). Not 'true romance' or was that much later than 93??
Really like Beasley and Love but not sure about Love's athleticism. If Love dominates the tournament he'll probably move up into the top 6 for sure. Beasley may not come out.
I hate to say it because I like Beantown's perspective but I root for close games and loses every time on the road. We have a draft party every year(since I can't remember). It would be nice to be up top again with a chance to get the likes of Stackhouse, S. Bradley, H. Hawkins, T. Thomas, etc..... Well maybe loosing isn't the way to go. I talked myself out of it.

nutzonyachin:

sfw

i like the idea of trying to move up in the draft (for a reasonable price) but would probably only do so for a big

goaldoc:

I attended my first Sixers game of the year against the Heat last night. The crowd seemed pretty decent to me. Now, since I have not been at othe games, I do not know what to expect, and whether last night was good or bad. To fans who have attended multiple games; how would you rate last nights crowd?

suede:

S.F.W.,your killing me!!!

nutzonyachin:

yeah it had reese witherspoon and i think somebody else famous in it. stands for so f what. terrible movie

nutz comes from a different media but if there was a movie about him (and i think he was a major inspiration for it) it would be CB4

sfw:

The consensus with friends and family, I hate to admit it(Suede), is that Lou will is most probably a spark off the bench hybrid(1-2) type player (Sedale Threat, Microwave.) Fun to watch. Needed on playoff teams. Nice kid but if you can get a stud, inside or out, you have to give to get.

sfw:

nutzonyachin, You got me. Bad memory. 1993??? Can't remember back that far.

Suede, Don't you have anything better to do? Another far out trade proposal????????

BoomDizzle:

There's a difference between winning a few extra games unexpectedly while still being in the lottery with winning a few extra games unexpectedly and making it to the playoffs. If the Sixers make the playoffs (which, again, I don't think they will because of a very tough March schedule), it would hopefully be encouraging to the young guys and be a valuable experience.

sfw:

Suede, Or maybe 6 far out trade proposals in a single post?

suede:

s.f.w., your making me get out on the ledge, you forgot B.Ogden,S.Haloman, and D.Awtry. I!M opening the window. Kenny Payneeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

sfw:

BoomDizzle, agreed.

By the way the sixers drafted Shawn Bradley with their first pick(#2)in 1993. That took us to the promise land. He played a mean first base. I'm depressed.......

sfw:

Don't forget about Mark Mcnamara???????

sfw:

leon wood is a pretty good official......

suede:

All right you win, let!s win as many as we can. Maybe we can draft another foriegn player that can jump over my gremlin.

TormentedInBeantown:

Nutz - I'm Philly thru-n-thru. I only moved to Boston 7 years ago after 30 in PA and NJ. Hence the "Tormented" pre-fix. Imagine waiting twenty years for a parade only to move to a city where they are a yearly event. It hurts. It hurts deep.

suede:

Watching N.C. vs.GEORGETOWN ON e.s.p.n. CLASSIC. #23 looks pretty good for N.C. No Portland scouts in the gym, they like that Bowie kid.

suede:

Tormented, that!s gotta be tough. Hope the Phillies get to play Sox in series.

sfw:

Beantown, feel for you. I guess Schill will be back in time for the series with a bloody sock. Maybe with Ed S. we'll finally make the right moves and you can get an edge on the bostoniites. It's a shame the Red sox won when you were there. They'd still be a depressed bunch if that didn't happen.

KM:

Anyone see the article in today's times about how the knicks really need a point guard? Im not trying to fuel the fires or anything, but its kind of interesting.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/08/sports/basketball/08knick.html

nutzonyachin:

you guys are crackin me up
-who the hell was that guy, marko milic or something i think, would've never remembered that....shame nobody guarded the rack with a car back in those days or we had a winner

beantown-my bad i just couldn't resist layin it on those arrogant pats, thought you were tormented because they lost

nutzonyachin-track 5-str8 outta m f compton-easy e........still cracks me up everytime i listen to it

nutzonyachin:

another college pf i like is taj gibson. caught my eye in last years tourney when i tuned in to see nick young and was far more impressed with gibson. only a sophmore so i'm not sure when he'll come out and don't like him as much as griffin at all but i think he will be a good nba power forward (hopefully for the sixers as some of you seem to have the notion that we could use one). I've never heard him mentioned by any of the draftniks. any intel on his game, draft projection????

KM:

I read that article as well. Was thinking of going to the ESPN trade machine to try somethings out w/ NY, but got caught up in other matters.

Anyone have any ideas for the Knicks? They do have a lot of talent on the roster, although obviously the team is a mess. And they could use cap space and a PG.

I read that people do not like Randolph, any other thoughts?
/Morty

KM:

I actually kind of think the knicks will probably pick higher than us and snatch up their new point that way, but if they dont its something to think of over the summer...

nutzonyachin:

the only player i'd have any interest in on the knicks is david lee and they're gonna want to keep him----also would be interested in this years draft pick but again i don't see them trading that....but this is the knicks, jk

sfw:

Gibson looked good last year but was very inconsistent early this year. Motivation seems to be an issue. At least when watching him. Also, might be a kenny thomas sized PF. Keeps shrinking. Can't stand the inflated college size listings. Got to wait until measured leading up to the draft.

Knicks are intriguing but who wants to bail Isaih out of that situation. With A. Miller they probably become a playoff team instead of us.

sfw:

actually, I mean playoff contender......

suede:

maybe we could draft the australian kid (ogilvy) and then have him box a kangaroo to see how tough he is in the post

John:

Suede, we sign Elton Brand, he becomes Jeff Ruland...plays great for half a season then breaks down forever...close the bridges, no jumpers!

Joe Doc:

Hey guys!

Great posts, as always! This is the only blog I read on a daily basis.

Sixerzguy, I'm glad some of my posts provoked some thought. Thats the only reason I post most of the trade ideas. Not because I actually think they'll work, but just to get other fan's opinions. Its just fun to play a GM on the computer! (get it? play a GM on the computer instead on playing a doctor on TV? ah never mind!)

As far as the Knicks trade possibility. The only players I would want back are Crawford and Lee. And I doubt they will give them up. I DON"T want Randolph. He's trouble just waiting to happen.

How about getting Brandan Wright from Golden St.? He doesn't even get 10 min/gm for them. He's a former 1st round pick that was MVP of the NCAA tournament last year I think. They might give him up for somebody like Evans since they need to add some toughness since 2 of the teams in their division just add bigs. And they can take on more salary then they give because of the Richardson trade exemption, so maybe we through in Green too.

Just one thing about possible draft choices. How about Marreese Speights from Florida? I know he is only a soph. but he might come out. He played behind Noah last year so he didn't play much, but this year he's playing 23min/gm and putting up 14pts/gm and 8rbs/gm. He's 6'10" and 250 lbs. And if he comes out he could slip to later in the lottery when the 76ers pick.

well, just a couple thoughts. Keep the ideas flowing!

Joe Doc:

What? You don't read Morty and Moishe Recommend... everyday? What would your mother say? How else would you know about Google's green energy investments, homeless ET, White Whine, iRobot, water rights as an investment strategy, sharks, and much more?

Time for bed. Let the late night posts begin.

Looking for NBA talent in all the wrong places.

Dreams of the NBA lottery dancing in my head......
