Any Ceremony For Iverson Can Wait

The 76ers have been criticized for not having a ceremony honoring Allen Iverson before tonight’s game at the Wachovia Center with the Denver Nuggets. (In Sunday’s Inquirer, we reported that there would be no pre-game ceremony according to Sixers officials).
Many fans have emailed us and said that for all Iverson did in 10-plus seasons, he should be honored before the game.
My response?
He’s now with the opposition and any honors can come when he retires. The Sixers fully plan to have a ceremony for Iverson once his playing days are over.
For now, they are scrapping for a playoff berth. This is no time to honor somebody, even a player provided so many thrills to the fans.
We’re told that the Sixers will allow the applause to last as long as possible when he is introduced.
The fans have all game to cheer Iverson if they want and many will no doubt do that.
Yet despite all the emotion that will be inside the Wachovia Center, the business at hand is winning the game.
And that is the Sixers only objective, not honoring a former player, albeit a future Hall of Famer.
And remember, for all he did, it was Iverson who wanted to be traded with the Sixers when he felt there wasn’t a chance for them to win.
Now they are winning and they are going to honor the player who wanted to bolt?
The Sixers will give Iverson his respect during the pre-game introductions. That is more than enough.
They have nothing else on their minds except trying to nail down an Eastern Conference playoff spot.
The celebration of Iverson can wait. This time, the Sixers are making the right call.

Ray:

Good call! I just hope Cheeks and AI meet and greet each other to let us all know everything is OK, this is just a game, relationships are more important!

Peace!

Jersey:

It doesn't matter if AI greets everyone in the building from Snider to the ball boys. The only thing that matters is that the sixers win this game.

snarf snarf:

It's funny because a lot of people such as KM only started following the sixers because of Allen Iverson. Where will there hearts be tonight?

Also don't forget about Reggie Evanstonight! Think that he will bring more energy then normal?

Kramer:

I have been waiting for this game FOREVER. It will be so weird watching Bubba Chuck on our floor in a different jersey.

I was a little disappointed when I heard there would be no video tribute, but after reading Snider's comments, I think it's pretty clear there will be a significant ceremony after A.I. retires and his #3 goes up the rafters. In the meantime, we can and will give A.I. a 5-minute standing ovation when his name is called during the pregame announcements. Warts and all, the man gave us countless memories throughout the years and single handedly carried the 2001 team on his back all the way to the Finals.

Who will be the MVP of the "A.I." Game ?

* Andre Miller, out for revenge against Karl for trading him?

* Andre Igoudala, eager to show A.I. that he's the man here now ?

* Lou Will, the guy who guarded A.I. in practice every day ? Is a crossover of A.I. ala Jordan happening tonight ?

* Thad Young, the new darling in town going off in a career game?

The possibilities are endless. I noticed that Denver does not play D (at least they didn't in last night's game) and that A.I.'s man keeps abusing him and scoring on him. I think the person who A.I. is responsible for guarding will be the one who goes off tonight.

Regardless, I will be hyped up beyond belief for tonight's game, and I think a lot of people will be as well. Alley I was ours for 10 years, and we did not get a chance to say goodbye to him. Tonight, we get to thank him for all the memories, good and bad, that he provided to us throughout the years. Nobody can deny that A.I. is one of the toughest players ever and one of the three greatest pound for pound players that ever lived along with with Isiah and Tiny (although Chris Paul may end up surpassing them all when it's all said and done).

I think the perfect scenario for tonight's game would be a 5 minute standing ovation for AI, Cheeks and AI to shake hands before the game, AI then going off for 50 while Lou Will and Thad have career games and the Sixers win. The fans in attendance will have everything they paid for and more. 7 PM can't come soon enough.

jesse:

Wasn't it a fan appreciation night that Iverson decided wasn't worth attending? Why is everyone rallying the troops for a warm and fuzzy with a guy who could have cared less while he was here. Didn't wanna practice with his teammates to make them better, didn't respect the fans enough to show, and quit on us when he thought we weren't going to win?????

jsnydes:

A comment on phil sheriden's article today, stating that this sixer team is more boring to watch than any team we had with AI on it. There is nothing more boring to watch than a bog hog dominating the ball while guys who can't shoot wait for a pass. This sixer TEAM is much more enjoyable to watch and gives this fan a greater sense of optimisism than any AI team. But I believe great teams are great teams not a collection of great players.

Bubbachuck:

he quit on them only after they failed to bring a decent 2nd fiddle for him...big dog, van horn, stack, webber...yuck...these guys sucked in Philly and he had enough...the whole practice thing was blown way out of proportion. The man was banged up from playing so hard every night. Does anyone ride Westbrook for not practicing in this town? NO! We need him fresh for Sundays just like we needed a fresh AI every game! Some fans are ridiculous! No need to bash him now! Just be happy with the team we have and enjoy the game for what it is. AI brought everyone so many great memories, just keep them as that!

Bubbachuck:

...also, I would really like to see Iggs take the ball to the hoop ala AI and get to the line more...alot more! He settles for 18-20 ft jumpers of rainbow fashion way too much when we all know he can get to the rim whenever he wants. His jumper is suspect at best but his athleticism is through the roof...GO TO THE HOLE AI!!!! Enough rainbows already! Anyone agree on this?

jesse:

I agree with jsnydes, I love the running game the sixers have adopted. I respect the defense too. They play hard, AS A TEAM!!!!! Everyone sees how successful the Suns were before the Marion trade with their running offense, for many years. Now that they have Shaq and traded the Matrix, they're different. Who runs better than the sixers now? Maybe Dallas? It's exciting to watch the sixers now.

jesse:

Bubbachuck:

First, your name says it all, you gonna ride AI3's stick no matter what...but you cannot honestly tell me that AI is free of blame for what happened over his tenure in Philly.

From all the arrests, to kickin his girl out in the streets butt naked, and ridin dirty lookin for her,the sixers stuck by him for all that, probably for selfish reasons, but they did.

Why didn't AI take a pay cut from his 20mil a year so we could have the cap space for a formitable #2, the AI years were cap hell, why didn't he LEAD the team by shutting his mouth and practicing so the people around him could get their looks too? He didn't make a damn person better when he was on this team, he only looked out for #3. You talk about how easily he got to the hole, he should have been averaging 12 dimes a game. No, he was looking to get to the line for himself, for the extra points. So while you say that it's the sixers fault for not getting him a quality #2, I say it was the sixers fault for not getting a quality #1, on and off the floor sooner.

I'd like to repeat that I think Dre is the best defensive and offensive match up we can throw at AI, and I'd like to see Mo start the game that way - move Green to the bench. Also, I loved Iverson as a player up until the fan appreciation fiasco, but this team, since sometime in January, is the most entertaining edition in years.

From the last thread:

Datruth, I understand that Wilcox doesn't have much range away from the basket. However, If we could acquire him for Utah's 1st rounder, that sounds like a good deal. I also like how is in the last year of his contract, so if he does not work out the team would have in season trade possibilities or free agency space for the '09 off season.

Anonymous:

When I was a teenager, I used to love Iverson. I thought he could do no wrong. As I grew older, I realized that he was getting by on god given abilities, and he didn't practice hard or display good leadership. The sad thing about Iverson is the youth of Philadelphia looked up to him as god. Iverson could have stressed hard work, and been a better role model and he could have changed society for the better, but he did not get it. He was happy about getting his millions and doing his own thing. It's sad. He could have truly made a difference in the community.

Zeke:

Jesse,

"All the arrests"?? Are we taking this back to his hig school days. The practice thing was way overrated.
Maybe you should watch less ESPN and more actual basketball. Who exactly is a solid "#1 off the floor." Kobe??
I do agree with you that acted like a baby and a punk his last year or two here, but bubbachuck is only trying to put his actions into context. It is indisputable that the Sixers failed miserably to surrond AI with a solid #2.
AI gave everything he had to this team for years, but always had to put up with haters that are really closet racists like you are Eskin.
I hate that ignorant excuse people make that "the sixers could never win a championship with AI." The bottom line is that they could never win a championship with Brown and King giving huge contracts to overrated players (Snow, McKie, Dalembert, Korver).

Jesse:

Zeke:

Do you think it was a coincidence that nobody wanted to come to play in philly???

Iverson was a ball hog, plain and simple. As far as being a racist?? How does me questioning his lack of dedication to the team, city, or fans being a racist? As far as the arrests go, check the news, if it wasn't him, it was the funboys he kept around him, bring his name down, getting pulled over with weed and guns in his cars.

I agree with the stupid contracts they've given out, but you have to overpay someone to put up with all the drama and knowledge that they are never going to win with a 6ft, 40% shootfirst, shoot second, no defense playing egotist.

TomD:

Let's face it, Iverson is complicated. Nobody played harder on the court, but he brought trouble off it. He never mailed it in like some other stars, but he never took the extra steps the team needed. I loved him when he was here, but frankly I think the team is more fun to watch now -- great young players, lots of ball movement, you never know where the next play is coming from. Sure, it's inconsistent, but even that makes it more interesting.

I'm going tonight with my kids, and I'll cheer long and hard for the guy at the beginning of the game. But when all is said and done, we're better off.

Time_Out:

Iguodala is going to have a busy night. He's probably going to guard both AI and Melo, while at the same time running the floor and scoring on the other end.

Miller on AI is a no-no. Maybe Green will be able to help out.

Maybe Lou Williams can have his AI/Jordan moment tonight. Let the kid get an iso with AI tonight and see what he can do! Cross him up and shoot the rock in his face!

KM:

"It's funny because a lot of people such as KM only started following the sixers because of Allen Iverson."

That is kind of funny, especially because i've never been a huge Iverson guy. Not a hater - i have respect for what he did as a Sixer for so many years, and respect his crazy ability in general, but I'm a team ball guy.

Anyway, though, agree with you, Marc. They can and should retire his number when he retires, but until then he's on the other team. And it should be a real good game tonight. Looking forward to it..

Jesse:

I understand that this is the first AI trip to philly since the trade, but don't forget about Dre Miller and Reggie Evans, they have something to prove against their old team too! Look for a high energy night(when isn't it) from Evans tonight.

Jesse:

I understand that this is the first AI trip to philly since the trade, but don't forget about Dre Miller and Reggie Evans, they have something to prove against their old team too! Look for a high energy game(when isn't it) from Evans tonight.

I am hoping A.I. is introduced to a new Philly basketball A.I. combo this evening...that is, All Involved and All Included...Team 76.

Go, Sixers!

Play hard...and together, tonight.

Good luck.

rick:

Anyone who was a fan here during the AI era, has a lot of reasons to love him. But, the Sixers failed to build around him (Not that this was an easy task, but Billy went about it in a terrible way)and traded him away. Cheeks wasn't able to coach him properly either, AI didn't respect him, or at least didn't show that respect.

In any case, AI is the enemy tonight. I don't care about Denver or the Nuggets or their playoff troubles. The Sixers have a chance at the 5 spot, and it's not inconceivable for them to catch Cleveland for the 4th spot! We need every win we can get.

So cheer for AI at the open, and then forget him. I hope the Sixers beat them by 20!

They should too- the Nuggets can't defend and the Sixers do.

Clif:

AI is an odd fit to build a team around. He can score at will and plays solid defense but his lack of size compromises his best ability to play D. He compensates by playing the passing lanes to get steals. This only worked well when he had a front court that could step up and close off the middle (Mutumbo, Tyrone Hill, Geore Lynch).

The unfortunate reality is that having AI on a team is a trade off between his point production versus what is being given up in his team defense because of his size not his will.

Stand up an cheer for him loud during introductions but wait until his retirement season to do the ceremony.

guruvoodoo:

Good post Marc!

If I could be there, I'd be saving most of my standing O's for the Sixers, especially the guys AIX didn't trust, and the Reggulator.

Coach Cool Mo' D has the boys playing great defence, Sixers by 8, especially if Big D can work Canby on the offensive end.

Who will Young T get to D up on? Hope he gets some time on Melo.

Barton:

If I could be there I would give him the standing ovation that he deserves. Far from perfect, this 5'10" 165 pound basketball Hobbit had serious heart and took more hard hits than ANYBODY I've ever seen. BUT, his contract always ate up too much of the cap and everyone that BK brought in to be his Sancho Panza eventually failed to live up to their billing. You will also notice that failed to be stars everywhere else they went after they left town.
He is a sure fire HOFer and without him we never would have made the finals or had those moments when we were proud to be 6ers fans but as Philly fans we born to forget that and only remember the bad. But now is now and this team is our team.
So I say 'Go AI! Go 6ers beat AI! Beat Denver! Beat the world.
Barton

Bob:

seriously stupid comments on here...AI made nobody better? How about Eric Snow, who could not have started anywhere else in the league without playing alongside a guy who could get him open looks so his miserable jumper could go in 40 percent of the time uncontested? Or George Lynch for those same reasons? Or board favorite Kyle Korver, who couldn't create his own shot if he was out there by himself? There are many more, so let's put that rumor to rest.

And anyone who thinks the 76ers are better now, or more fun to watch than at any time in AI's career, is crazy or has forgotten the many playoff runs we had with Iverson, not to mention the 2001 team, the most fun Sixers team to watch in the past quarter century.

Stop listening to the few bigoted media members out there who preach this junk, and let your eyes be your judge.

I hope he drops 50 tonight and gives the fans one more night to remember...and honestly if the Nuggets win, I'm OK with it.

kevin:

I disagree with Marc, I think the Sixers should give AI the MIC, let him address the SIXERS ornganzation, the FANS, and the City. GIVE AI his props for the the service he did here! LET him recieve his ovation! After the GAME, ON THE COURT , coach CHEEKS should go up to AI shake his hand.
and SAY "NICE TO SEE YOU.......AI".......and now coach MO can go and coach the SIXERS to a Championship!

Dean:

Good post Marc. Jsnyde, I also read Phil Sheridan's AI article (first one of his articles I've read in 6 months). Let's be clear on one thing here - Phil Sheridan is a complete idiot that shouldn't even be writing sports columns for the Main Line Times, let alone the Inquirer. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth and doesn't understand the first thing about sports except for what Andy Reid and Joe Banner feed him.

He talks about us not being so harsh on athletes when they make a misstep? Well, he led the public lynching (as asked to by Andy and Joe) to get TO out of here. He called him a cancer repeatedly and GUARANTEED that the Iggles would be a better team and return to the Superbowl after TO was gone. How'd that work out Phyllis?

I've had numerous run-ins with Mr. Sheridan over email...he takes both sides of an argument. For example, his last comment that the Sixers are "less interesting" now than when AI was here??? The Sixers are the most interesting they've been since the 2000-01 season. They're young, hungry, and play as a team. Phil thinks they're not interesting because there's no drama on the team - wow, funny how he took the COMPLETE OPPOSITE viewpoint when TO was on the Iggles? The Inquirer should just do us all a big favor and relegate this moron to writing horoscopes (although, it wouldn't shock me if he screwed that up as well).

Now that I've finished discrediting Phil "Big Loser" Sheridan, I have one thing to say about tonight's game...

I will cheer AI in the intros, but I hope the Sixers win by 40 and he shoots 0 or 30. He's the enemy now...

GO SIXERS!!

TormentedInBeantown:

Being a marooned Sixers fan in Boston, I had no idea there was a controversy about an official ceremony for Iverson. I loved watching the guy and regardless of what you think of him personally, he did a tremendous amount for us fans. Did Stackhouse or Bradley take us to the Championship, let alone a winning record? No.

HOWEVER, the idea of a ceremony BEFORE an important game is ludicrous! Who is the one leading this controversy - AI or a handful of fans that are unwilling to move on? I sure hope it's the latter b/c if AI himself is griping, that would really bother me. This is the NBA. This is an important game for both teams. Granted this was his house for many years but not anymore, not at least as long as he is wearing an opposing uniform. The only time I could see something like that as being acceptable would be in his retirement year - that's it! As far as tonight goes, he's the enemy.

Any suggestion of pandering to him by officially worshipping and energizing him prior to tip-off should be completely rejected. I'm glad it was. It's clear the Sixers are on a path of intelligent moves and decisions, to which we should all be thankful.

Bob:

Amen to most of what you said. While Iverson has many flaws in his team game, flaws I will not deny, Brown and King could never get 2 players on the court alongside him who could both play defense and hit an open jumper. How many times did we watch Snow brick open 15 footer after open 15 footer? They always needed a big point guard to defend and hit the open jumper, and a small forward who could shoot from 3 and defend. Can you imagine if the team had not passed on Paul Pierce? And once Mutumbo, Snow and McKie were given big deals, it was all downhill as BK tried to exchange one problem player with a bad contract for another problem player with a bad contract.

Tormented:

I remember being at the game against Orlando when AI dropped 62 or 63 and at the end the crowd was going nuts, and he was shouting "my house my house!" to the crowd.

Great memories, but you are right that it is not his house any more. And the way he left town, with the fan appreciation night fiasco, which I was also at, and the way he dogged the team the next year really left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Bob:

How about those many nights when you knew five minutes into the game that it was going to be a special night, and you didn't move from your seat because he was going to drop 40, or 50, or yes, even 60. The whole ballhog thing is so misguided.

Did Iverson call the plays - no? Did Iverson bring the ball up the floor - no? Was three-down called 50 or 60 percent of the time by the coach in the half-court setup - yes? Why? Because there usually was nobody else who could create offense.

I mean, this is a guy who was surrounded in his best season by Mutombo, Ty Hill, Lynch and Snow, four guys not exactly known for their offense.

AI gave us everything he had every time he stepped on the floor, and his talent was and still is remarkable. He deserves an extended ovation tonight.

BTW - Flyers honored Roenick before their game against his San Jose Sharks this year...so there is a little hypocrisy in the organization not honoring AI tonight.

sixerzguy:

Dean,

lol, don't know if you were trying to be funny, but that was good stuff...

Now you've made me wanna read Sheridan a little bit, I may or may not have read anything he's written before, but it must be forgettable stuff cuz I just can't remember. I miss Bill Lyon, I wish he'd written something for AI.

But Marc's pretty good, too - his podcasts w/Joe Juliano are very, very well-done, his style when he does them is very different from his writing.

Got a question for you: Carmelo Anthony or Rudy Gay - who's better? Iggy or Rodney's gotta take Anthony tonight, right? I just don't see Thad winning a matchup with Anthony at this point, but maybe a few years down the road it'd be fine. Anthony's too quick and too strong for him.

Anonymous:

I am a huge fan of iverson. My favorite memory is of that Daily News cover when the Sixers were on their championship run and Iverson, McKie and Snow were dressed as Revolutionary War figures marching with drums. That image and the memory of that run still brings a lump in my throat.

With that being said, i am enjoying the Sixers more now than since that year. That year was an abberation and the Sixers did not play like a team since that one season with the particular core of role players. I am so happy Iverson is one and we get to watch a team, albeit not a great one, yet, develop each and every night.

Ask yourself this question, if the trade did not happen, and we still had AI instead of Andre Miller, what would our record be?

We all know we would be one of the worst teams in the league and i think that says it all.

Dean:

Sixerzguy - I'd probably matchup with Melo using a combination of Iggy, Carney, and Thad (sparingly). When Carney's in the game, he guards Melo...when he's not, Iggy guards Melo. To be honest, I'm not overly worried about this game tonight, especially with Denver being on the 2nd leg of a back to back. The only issue is whether AI wills his team to victory; that said though, this Denver team has really mailed it in over the past month. Even though they're still on pace to win close to 50 games, there's no excuse to be giving up 120+ pts night in and night out during a playoff run with Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin in the middle.

In terms of Melo vs Rudy? I'd take Melo - I think he's more of a total package guy.

Time_Out:

the sixers HAVE to defend the 3 tonight. With JR Smith and Kleiza, they could get any shot off tonight with our crappy 3 point defense.

I remember the 1st Boston game, guys like Eddie House and James Posey were left wide open and they torched the Sixers. Lets hope that they prepared very well or at least took some damn good notes of last night's Nuggets loss to Detroit.

DEFEND THE 3.

Dervin:

Wow, jesse and Narducci, I'd hate to hear what you two would say about Iverson if he didn't take this team to an NBA finals.

The Sixers didn't draft well in Iverson's prime. They overpaid for a lot of role players. Played Musical coaches. And took some major trade risks. And it wasn't Iverson who was exploring trade options from the years 1999-2005.

As by his play on International teams, he's more than able to change his game to meet the skills of his teammates.

And let's finally remember, nobody predicted the sixers would be doing this well, this late into the season. The Sixers decided to stop trying to build around Iverson but they didn't have the backbone to tell that to him. Iverson had to force their hand.

Joe:

I don't know if Jesse is a guy or a girl, but one thing we can all agree on is he/she is a BITCH!

JJ:

A.I desrves that and more. He only left when he had enough of the media and the bull he put up with year after year. He understood that the sixers needed to rebuild and didn't want to be apart of it. He could do no more for the franchise with it being in the shape it was in. And he knew that the young guys wouldn't develop the way the should with him being there. Besides you play to win so who can blame him!!!

Lou A.:

People always complain that AI never had a good #2 scorer, well now he has Carmelo and what has he done with that, 8th place and out in the first round last year, and maybe not making the playoffs this year!He is a tremendous "indiviual"
talent, who cares nothing about anything other than himself, his motivation is stats not winning, it's adulation for himself not cheers for his team. This team and these players are so much better with out him, it's not even funny. Look at the development of Green, the other AI, Korver (even though he's gone)and sammy. The "TEAM" is better because they play for each other and they play to win, as a "TEAM", and that gentlemen is how you win championships.

Bob:

Lou,

The TEAM is better in what way, exactly?

The only way I know to judge a TEAM being better is W's and L's, and to say this Sixers TEAM minus AI is better than the Sixers TEAMS with AI is not factually correct.

Sorry...try again...which drive time inaccuracy is next?

Bob:

The season still has plenty of games remaining, but at this point this year's team is better than any Sixers team since Brown left.

No need for a ceromony, he will get a standing ovation without a doubt. The game isn't sold out just for people to boo him. (by the way ticket prices are nearly double for this game compared to the Boston Sell out I was at last week)

Take a Look Inside the Sixers Locker Room:
http://reclinergm.wordpress.com/2008/03/18/take-a-look-inside-the-philadelphia-76ers-locker-room/

KM:

Dean, pretty good points about Carney and Thad. This should be a good challenge/measuring stick for them. If everyone plays like they have been, Im with you that we have a good chance to win. The wild card (besides AI's potential to score silly amounts of points) would be Time_out's observations about the 3 ball, i think.

One thing is for sure, Im expecting to see our guys bring the intensity. Even if Denver has been mailing it in as you say, they still have the potential to put up big points. Good measure of both teams, really - one would think that if Denver had any kind of team dynamic going, they'd be fired up to support AI tonight...

suede:

Bob, I!m a big A.I. fan but the reason Snow was here was because A.I. couldn!t guard the 2 guards on other teams and the reason Hill, Lynch, etc. were here was because he needed teammates who didn!t need the ball to give maximum effort. Croce said it best on J.M ac~!s show this afternoon; It!s ashame he did not take better care of his body and work out like Koby and Jordan. He could have been even better, but!!!!

Joe Doc:

I loved watching AI play! He was so exciting to watch. Nobody has ever played with more "heart" then AI did. That being said, he shouldn't get a ceremony before the game. He is on another team now! Forget about the "fan appreciation night" thing. He is the enemy tonight! When he retires, then proclaim an "AI Day" if you want but until then a short applause is all he gets!

As far as this arguement about this team not building around him: Does anybody think it just isn't possible? I mean look at his team now! He has Melo(all-star), Camby(top 5 C) and good players like Martin and Kleiza. He has a decent team around him and they can't even make the playoffs! I know its the West and its tougher, but with him, Melo, and Camby there shouldn't be a question. AI is a great player but it might be impossible to build a championship team around him! He is what he is!

And this Sixers team is much better with out him! They play TEAM ball now, not the AI and 4 guys show! The young guys couldn't develop with him here. I'm not saying it was AI's fault, but its the truth. He demanded the ball so much that everybody just waited for AI to win the game. It just as much the other players fault as AI's but it had to change! I think this team is much more fun to watch because we get to see a few different players make incrediblly athletic plays, not just AI making those plays! Its just a different kind of excitement!

Bob- I'm not sure what W-L's your looking at but I believe the Sixers had a better W% after he left last year. And we should have a better record this year compared to what we did in AI's last full season.

Just watched the introductions, and gotta say that it brought a smile to my face to hear all the cheers for Iverson, see him get a moment in the spotlight, see him cup his hand to his ear like old times and then to hear the cheers turn back to boos when the announcer moved on to the rest of the Nuggets.

xing:

I cheered for the man while he played for our team, but I have to say that my loyalties are with the home squad. When Charlie Barksalot left town I continued to like him as a player, but I never rooted for him against my team. For all you new Nugget lovers for the sake of AI, come home, we'll take you back if you recant real quick. IF we win tonight, you'll all be singing a different tune anyway. I won't be too upset if we lose tonight and then win the next three like we did against Boston and then won against Mo, San, and Chi-towns.

Barton:

Loved Wilt but still rooted against his team whenever they played Philly. Same with AI. Has as much heart as any NBA player has ever had but the team concept only out so well.
Finals in 2001 was the one year when they surrounded him with serious worker bees (i.e. George Lynch, Tyrone Hill, Dikembe et al) instead of going for the true stud to play alongside him.
He was loyal, often to his own detriment. Family and friends were always trying to get him in trouble yet he never turned his back on them. I've heard that he literally pays all of the bills for dozens of people back in Virginia. Why? Because it was a pact he and his friends made when they were kids, that the last one standing would look after their families and sadly he is the last on alive or not in jail.
Yet one of them who he had put up in an apartment still tried to blackmail him accusing AI of breaking into his home (AI was the leasholder and had a key) with a gun (turned out to be a cell phone). Naturally when the charges were dropped I dont recall anyone taking back the things they said about him when they thought he was guilty.
After saying all of that I have to admit that he never was a true team player because he rarely ever trusted his teammates. Was he right or was he wrong? You decide.
Love him for his love of the game and his energy that he never failed to bring to the court if not always at practice.
I wish him well, and I hope he has a nice game but loses in the end.
Welcome home AI, now get out there and lose.

We must have gotten more Standing Os in our past 2 home game than we got for the first half of the season :D

This team is really beginning to grow on this city

Barton:

Up 4 with 4 minutes left. Just dying! Living in NYC I have to use the computer gamecast and my vivid imagination. Being a 6ers fan can hurt so bad and if we win it will hurt so so good!

What a win. Despite 21 turns and 15 missed free throws, they still pull it out. Gritty, gutsy win gets us to .500 at last. Looks like we're going to keep on rising too. Cheeks deserves coach of the year for what he's done with these guys. Would not have won this game just a couple months ago, but he's got them humming now. Love what I'm seeing each and every game. By the way, we definitely got the better end of the trade. Andre Miller was fantastic again.

dbeas:

the 6ers is the greatest team ever invented!! i like a.i. a lot but the 6ers are bigger than any one player, and they showed it tonight. watching these stretch of games makes me wonder if we are witnessing the beginning of a really good team for years to come.

Barton:

Can stop hyperventilating now. What a win! AI was great but as a 6er he was usually great but often we still loss.
Too bad we dont play Denver every night. Averages would go up 5 points a man. Denver may have one of the worst defenses I have seen in years and not just tonight. How many teams are capable of losing games when they routinely score 120-130 a game?

Couldn't help but feel sorry for AI :'(
I don't he is ever going to win a ring in Denver...
there are exactly 3 players on that team that care,
JR Smith, KMart and AI. Camby and Melo just don't give a shit...it's a real shame

Haf Full,

Yeah, AI seems to have that effect on teammates everywhere.

Chris:

I didn't watch the game but kinda followed it on NBA.com and when I saw that final score, I had the biggest grin on my face. I love the cohesiveness of our young Sixers team and the defense that they play. Add that that we're .500 and less than 2 games out of 5th place and I think I'll be set for the next couple of days. But the free throw shooting...jeez...I know we're last in the league at just over 70% (I think) but I have this sinking feeling that when we get in a playoff series, that's going to be the straw that broke the camel's back and I'll be as heartbroken as everyone here. But I'm optimistic right now though.

Kind of a shame he never spent one single Summer as the Greats do, to in the slightest bit expand any part of his game, other than maybe adding a new one on one move. Great for the team, and his teammates.

Selfish, waste of talent

suede:

Same old A.I., light up the scoreboard but seemed like Willie got a point a minute out there.Sammy outplayed Camby? Rodney, nice game AGAIN!!A.Miller= incredible; WHO!S NEXT!!!

Who were worse? The Officials or the Nuggets announcers?
Just awful

How in the hell can Stern send Bob Delaney, the all time worst referee. to officiate a game as "sentimental" as this one?

David, puleeeze step down already. You have been paid as a max player, even more, yet you really need to get out to the Dog Track. Enough of you, and your staff.

Jerkass above,

You think any team Shaq played on, while winning rings, was also not in bottom 5 of NBA FT rankings?

Who cares.

I remember you posting that we need to get rid of Rodney carney last week, even though we have him under contract for 2 more years. What up playa?

snarf snarf:

And Anonymous, your right dude. Those announcers were terrible. Snarf snarf

Bruce:

Nice to emerge with a win, in a weird game that had not a shred of flow.

Agree, Delaney mucks up most games he is involved in. And is considered one of the Veteran Refs. Not good.

But, a win is a win. Seemed that Q1 delay was a sign of things to come, was one of the ugliest high scoring games I have seen.

Boy, the Nuggets play as if Defense is hardly a part of what determines a game's outcome. Horrendously undisciplined, or lack of interst in defending at all.

Maybe they merely thrive on altitude; they cannot win on the road, at all. Strange, ugly, yet high scoring game. Weird stuff.
