AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The 76ers were once again aided by a mentality that never allows them to die. At least not for too long.
Raise your hand if you truly felt that down by 15 midway through the third quarter that the Sixers had a puncher’s chance at beating the Detroit Pistons.
Sunday’s 90-86 win in Game 1 over the Detroit Pistons would have been a surprise anyway it happened.
The fact that the game appeared out of reach against one of the best defensive teams in the NBA, made it more impressive.
What one has to admire is the team-oriented attitude of the players.
Nobody was probably more disappointed than Reggie Evans for not getting the start against the Pistons.
He’s a veteran who had the most playoff experience of the starters – 16 games entering last night.
Evans had to give way to rookie Thaddeus Young. And isn’t it fitting that Young gave the Sixers a serious spark in the first quarter and Evans took charge in the fourth period.
This might have been Evans’ best all-around game, especially considering the stakes and the opponent. He had 11 points, 14 rebounds and made scored six of the biggest points of the season in the fourth quarter.
The fact that the Sixers never quit, is what has made them so appealing to the fans.
We’re sure there will be a few fans out there who no doubt think the Sixers can win the series.
What matters is that the Sixers probably think they can win it, even though there are many of us out there who remain skeptical.
Even the biggest skeptic had to be impressed by the Sixers’ grit. The Sixers also went against conventional wisdom by attempting to run in the playoffs against the Pistons.
The Sixers had 16 fast break points (compared to 12 for Detroit). Considering that the Sixers only had 26 fast break points in their first three games against Detroit, that’s impressive (The fourth game with Detroit, the Pistons played many subs).
So the Sixers ran and clawed and fought and to the surprise of man, they won.
And now what appeared to be just a formality of a series, could turn into a dogfight.
The Sixers all of a sudden can be loose for Game 2 on Wednesday, while the stakes have dramatically increased for the Pistons.
“It’s a must win game Wednesday for us,” Detroit coach Flip Saunders said.
And who would have thought that Detroit would be saying that after just one game?

we're going up against a coach that is basically fighting for his job right now. Flip is going to unleash Jason Maxiell because he was a beast on those boards. Sixers have to do some gang rebounding, because there won't be too many times where Billups will miss 3 free throws in the 4th quarter or Hamilton/Sheed missing shots 2 feet from the rim.
I like how they got out early in the 1st with Thad out there, but Sheed was nasty in the 2nd quarter blocking everything. He's almost bi-polar in the way he plays sometimes.
And wtf was up with him going up to the Sixers in their team huddle!?!?!? He's taking us a little too lightly.

Nice night to be a Sixers fan. Personally, I wasn't able to watch the game the way it deserved, so people will have to fill me in on details, but I will say that this is the 2nd straight win in Detroit, with a tight 4th quarter played mostly at Detroit's pace - that's not a fluke.
p.s.
Wouldn't making anonymous comments, not mentioning the game, be "negative"? Miserable much? Get some perspective, or, start talking about the game, or, don't read and comment here.

Detroit is not mentally tough enough to beat us in this series. Not smart enough either. I liken Detroit to Mike Tyson in his later career where he relyed on the early rounds and fear to beat his opponents. Our Sixers truly have a Rocky mentality. If you arent ready to go 12 FULL rounds you might be checking out Jack. And I really dont think Detroit has it in them to fight our kind of fight for the long haul. Like I stated before these are NOT the Larry Brown Pistons you remember. They are living off of yesteryears reputation. But they are scared of us. I smell fear...

Yeah man I'm going to be looking forward to our next game. Its good to be a Philadelphian right. Flyers, Phillies will come around, Sixers, Eagles( hoping we can trade Lito Sheppard for Chad Johnson or Andy Reid drafts the WR from Michigan State.) Why do we attach our emotions to these teams so hard? I was yelling at Iggy for Missing foul shots. Honestly Morty..we could have beaten Detroit by about 10 points if we settled down. They seemed to be the team that was panicking and didnt know what to do..Not us..But I bet our next game we will have a convincing win

Yeah I'm not going to jump off the deep end..lol..I'll just enjoy this win and see how Detroit reacts. This next game should tell us everything we need to know. I agree Rip and Billups have alot of wear and tear. Thats probably why they didnt play a whole lot of minutes. I hope all that extra time has made them soft. Orlando looks scary...I saw Fred Sanford shooting 3's. I heard him over the p.a system saying ' Thats 3 in your eyes ya big dummy'. This win has made my week.

Very happy about this one, gang. Been a fun year and opening the playoffs like this just keeps the good times rolling. Great to see Reggie step up in a big moment. He is a tough, tough b-ball player. He played the same kind of hard-nosed game against the C's in the last Boston game of the year. A tough mother. Does his play explain the low minutes for J Smith, who seemed to help during the 3rd Q run? Iggy was clutch with those two rebounds at the end of the game, rising to the occasion with a near triple-double like the all-star he is. The Pistons looked very scared in that second half. If Philly keeps playing full throttle, anything is possible in this series.
Marc Narducci rules. You negative bloggers who don't comment on the actual game are the ones we can do without.

This game has made me even more excited for the series, which seems like its going to be an absolute dogfight. The Pistons slept on us and we took it to them and showed them the hard way why we deserve to be in the playoffs. Next game, they had better bring their A game because we know that we can step it up to another level as well (Iggy, Lou Will, and Sammy D all played a bit below their level offensively). And it always seems that we're stopping Detroit in the fourth quarter as we outscored them 27-16. They're sleepin' on us hard as hell and they make it seem that when they decide to turn it on, they'll blow us out (as per their respective post game interviews). They better realize that in order to have a chance to win, they're gonna have to play some inspired basketball.

Awesome, the team did not give up and won't give up.
The Pistons took us way to lightly they were trying to rest Billups and Hamilton. Flip Saunders was trying to rest players. He's was gonna try and beat us with his bench. He is the worst coach ever he basically has a team that coaches itself and he can't do anything right. Last year he allowed Lebron to beat the pistons by himself. Ever heard of a double team?
Andre Miller played great, Iggy did not shoot well but almost had a friggin triple double. Lou great off the bench got blocked acouple times but is good he kept driving. Reggie what can I say he was great. Sam was solid, Willie G way to step up, the whole team played hard great game.
I am so happy about this win. I did get to the net on sixers website and it was fun would like to see some regular posters here in the live chat. Dei Lynum was on TNT good for her she is the best female sports reporter.

Great game, we outplayed them enough to cover our mistakes - the layups that didn't go in, some turnovers etc. These rookie-type mistakes ought to decrease as the series goes on.
Zeru, good job on your predictions. I think the Pistons win the next one but game 3 back here will be a great ballgame - the real deal.

One of the best things about the 76ers winning that first game is that now we will all see a very tight Flip Saunders coaching. I'm sure he will tighten up his bench rotation as well as coach a little more not to lose.
I still think Detroit hasn't seen us play our best this year. Our bench could do some damage against this team. I also think Mo found a couple of lineups that worked pretty well for him, with Thad guarding Prince and Iggy checking Chauncey.
I think Lou Will, Jason Smith and Carney are definitely going to play better than they did the first game, especially at home in Philly. I am so proud of this team for what they did. However, let's hope they are not satisfied with just stealing one.
Suede, where you at?

Marc, thanks for keeping it real. I don't read the sports to hear a knowledgeable sportswriter tell me that he's cheering for the home team. I don't want unrealistic optimism from the pros. Unpaid bloggers like myself, datruth, zeru, etc.. have the luxury of having the fan's optimism. It's the fan's role to root root root. If the writers started doing that, I'd skip the writing. It's their job to report the good and bad. I've been reading Marc, Phil, and all the others that chime in over the past many years, and I think Marc and Phil have done a very good job. The only one I like more would be Bill Lyons- he has a treat of an article in today.

I did enough analyzing here:
http://www.reclinergm.com/76ers-vs-pistons-playoff-series-philly-steals-game-1/
But the last two years looks like Detroit has lost some hunger. And I am tired of people saying they need a kick in a*s, and they need a wake up call etc etc. To me that just means they don't want it bad enough. Great teams play hard all the time and don't take anything for granted. And I don't think we have seen that from Detroit since they won the championship. They got fat and happy.
The Sixers are clearly the more motivating and hungry team and now they got a huge shot of confidence. Detroit will come out next game with some fire but if the Sixers can temper it they could win game two with the right offensive adjustments to put Iggy in better positions to score.

Wow, what's up with the shifting formats? I had to register philly.com to post earlier, and there were like no comments, now its back to the old format. Can we say inopportune moment? So i guess no one saw any of the posts on the other format (statman & suede were both on there)...
Anyway, that was a hell of a game...second time we pulled out a grinder against the Eastern Conf. kings of grinding. and we did it in spite of missing a TON of dunks and layups in a disgusting 2nd quarter, missing some key free throws late in the 4th, and an awful shooting night from igoudala.
Despite my concerns about the lineup, i thought Mo did a pretty good job of spliting the difference by starting thad but keeping willie in. Wille, by the way, had a some clutch moments and justified his place in the lineup last nite. I still wonder, given thad and reggie's excellent games (and igoudala's relatively poor one) if it wouldn't be better to have all three starting (especially think it would help igoudala getting his shot off). But you cant fault a win, so props to the whole team & Mo, and good luck on wednesday.

BTW, my personal belief as to why we won - watched the 1st half on sportsnet. started watching the 2nd half on TNT, and sure enough we made a push. The second i switched back to sportsnet, detroit started making a push. When we got down by 15, i switched back to TNT and finished out the game there. So there's the empirical evidence - watch the game on national TV and we win. and ya'll thought zeru was a prophet :)

"This Is Our Game To Lose" is a phrase that I use during halftime chit chat in the board to remind the posters that really "This Is Our Game To Lose".
We were down 13 by halftime with 6 missing lay-ups, alot of non-call foul, missing FTs, and the team who is ranked top 10 on the league was almost out rebound by one guy from the Pistons, Maxiell.
That's what I howling and barking all over the board yesterday when we were down.
"This Is Our Game To Lose" posts were ideas from me.
We are 7-2 lifetime when we are home on a playoff series against Detroit. SO, if we can take care of our home, we could win in 5 or 6.

I for one am really happy with the play that our young guys and senior team leader Mr. Miller brought into the 2nd half of the game. I like it that he is not afraid to take it to the hole or spot up for a jumper when other options are closed. How's the trade for Miller looking today?

Hi folks. Thanks to KM for pointing me back here. I like this old format a lot better, esp. because one can make paragraphs! Hopefully they will keep this around.
Just to add one more comment to my comments on the 'other' site, I didn't think Dalembert did a bad job on RWallace. It seemed like Wallace was killing the Sixers in the first half, but I checked the stats and he was something like 6-13 (and finished 9-21). The Pistons made a major mistake by not riding Billups against Miller or Lou early in the game. By the time they went to Billups late, Iguodala had switched onto him.

Marc,
Another great comeback by the Sixers. This team certainly never quits, and has a track record of coming back, like they did late in the year at Boston. Evans and Willie Green were huge, and Young provided early energy. Free throw shooting will loom large in this series, as well as the tempo. Would like to see Carney defend Billups, his length will give him problems. If Miller keeps playing Chauncey the way he did in game one, the Pistons will have their hands full.

K.M., thanks; both the small and big lineups worked, seemed Det. ran their offense through their bigs, rather than their guards. I expect Billups and Hamilton to assert themselves next game. Where is Willie!s cousin, Jumpin, just kidden, Willie deserves some props because when they doubled the dre!s we needed another guy that could get his own shot. Sheed hit some tough shots but Sam is becoming a defensive force, Det. attacked the basket as soon as he left the floor.

Hey guys, are the Pistons taking on their coaches laid back personality. Garnett has lit a fire under his teammates in Boston yet never seemed to have that effect on some pretty talented Timberwolve teams, is Saunders more the reason for those past failures than Garnett, and would Skiles or another tough love type coach let this team coast like it seems to do?

I think Pistons fans would agree with you that Saunders is the problem. However, they did make to back to back conference finals under him, and won 59 games this year, so it's not like they are totally underachieving. I think the decline and departure of Ben Wallace may have a lot to do with the issue. He and Sheed were a fearsome tandem in the paint, and now they only have Sheed.

Morty, Im thinking that Maxiel has the potential to become a big ben type guy before long. But yes, agree that they miss ben's performances when in his prime.
Overall, i just think their core is a step slower and perhaps almost as importantly they just don't seem to intimidate us. One exchange that i though was telling was lou's first & second plays of the game - Billups drew a foul on lou to welcome him to the game(which made me say uh-oh), and lou promptly returned the favor by drawing a foul on chauncey at the other end. great tit-for-tat by lou, showing chauncey that he's not the only one who can be crafty - veteran or no. Also loved chauncey's body language when forced to sit with foul trouble - lets just say he didn't look like a confident veteran of untold eastern conf. championships.

Just watched the last 30 seconds of the game for the first time (DVR got cut off last night at the 2 minute mark), and noticed two things. First, Thad played fantastic D on the sequence that ended with Prince's miss. He denied Prince on the post initially, then dropped into the lane to help deny Wallace the ball on the pick and roll, and then he jumped back out to contest Prince's shot just enough to throw him off. Wow.
Second, on the play where Wallace missed a layup, Hamilton just shoved Sammy for a "pick." Should have been a foul call. Karma is a bitch Detroit.

Maxiel looked like a load, what happened to him in the 2nd half?

For Jumpin':
A quote from a Detroit newspaper: "Hamilton, too, has to be more assertive. This will be a brutal series for the Pistons if he continues to get outplayed by Willie Green. Green had 17 points, hitting 7 of 11 shots."
Keep taking it to the weight room, young fella!

Some observations.
Amazingly got great play from Willie & Thad and they didn't play for much of the stretch in the 4th qtr(went with Reggie & Low Will - except for thad's D stint that Morty referenced).
Bad decision by the Detroit staff to sit the starters until 8 plus minutes remained in the game. Really hurt the pistons. They just couldn't regain momentum at that point.
Andre Miller just dominated during the 2nd half.
Really nice team effort. Wait til Rodney comes in next game and hits a couple 3's that will be another surprise for the Pistons.
Reggie looked like that power forward we all want last night.
Great game time. Didn't lose any sleep.

what does all that rest do to the conditioning of a player when they start averaging about 25 mpg for the last month?
can Billups come out and play 40 min next game? What about Rasheed?
That slow and boring pace by Detroit just gives Philly too much energy to do other things.

sfw - your observation about the detroit starters not playing much of the 4th quarter is something i was really thinking about too. Time_out seems to be thinking along the same lines, wondering whether they really can go the distance. I remember when I was an athlete and we would "rest" towards the end of a season, the peak effect lasted at most 3-4 weeks. after that, it became a conditioning issue. Maybe pros who have done this sort of thing forever and a day have a longer threshold - and one would think that detroit would fall into that category, but you do wonder if eventually the same effect will kick in. It's always a balancing act, the resting factor. Wednesday should tell us a lot about whether we just took them by surprise or if that really was their max effort.

Do you think we proved to TNT that we are finally Prime Time worthy?

To the moronic Trolls pickin on Morty and Marc, where have you been? It's a sign of respect to our sixers that the dregs of society have taken the time to show us how much it pains them that our boys are starting to become a force. Show us your pain trolls, let me feed off your tears.

Yes we did, and they better stack our plate next year with a full dosage of ABC, ESPN, and TNT games. Who wouldnt want to see us play? Fast breaks from hell, dunks on peoples faces, and ofcourse our future Dream Teamer Thad Young.

J.Nash on SPORTSNET; E.S. asked players [Iggy especially] whether they wanted to stay in Detroit or go home between games, most teams go home they said; team voted to stay in Detroit, I guess Willie gets some home cooking for the team!!!

it is also safe to assume that the pistons will come out in game 2 like a pack of rabid dogs.

Dbeas., I can!t believe I!m saying this but as far as I!m concerned, they can bring it on. One thing they don!t have is a dominent player; [Dw.Howard, L.James, etc.] If you look at the key matchups [Sam/Sheed]; [Iggy/Hamilton]; [A.Miller/Chauncy];[Thad/Prince]; [Mcdyess/Reggie];[ L.Will/Stuckey]; and [Jason/Maxeil] they have slight advantages here and there but not enough to strike fear. And we may have a coaching advantage, although I!m not sure of that yet.

they also have the ability to put a big guard on billups. l will looks like the big x factor, l hunter had a hard time staying in front of him. once he makes an adjustment in finishing his shots(sheed was throwing his weak layups over row 5) he may be a force.

Checked out a Detroit blog. Still no respect for the Sixers. Still thinking they will run off 4 in a row. Oh well. link
The Greek:
Thanks for the defense, but miserable anonymous posters having a conversation with themselves till 4 in the morn speaks for itself.

Great game boys! I agree that dumbass that couldn't even post his name was just yapping to himself. Doubt he's a philly boy. Thanks for the link Morty, will check it out.
Still am in shock over that 15 ft. fadeaway by Evans! Are you kidding me?? And how was not AI fouled at least once in the 2nd Q while going up for a shot like 4 times??
Game 2 is gonna be a battle.

I hope the sixers make detroit run their tempo. Theres no way anybody other than Hamilton or Prince can go 40+ mpg. They should gas that other team out.
Keep Antonio McDyess in the game as long as possible.
