ATLANTA -- There was no champagne in the locker room, just a lot of smiling faces and outward pride.
It seems fitting that the 76ers clinched their first playoff berth since 2005 in a game that sort of epitomized this unpredictable season.
Friday’s 109-104 win over the Atlanta Hawks was one where the Sixers were far from smooth. In fact they had to fight their way through some difficult times, and to the Hawks credit, they didn’t give up either.
The Sixers looked a little exhausted in the third quarter, but as usual, the opponent couldn’t apply the knockout punch.
Despite being out played by a decent margin in the third period, they led 77-74 entering the fourth when Andre Iguodala hit a 28-foot three pointer with 00.4 seconds left.
And the Sixers never trailed in the fourth quarter, despite repeated runs by Atlanta.
After the early going, when the Sixers had a 16-2 first half lead in fast break points, the Hawks forced them into a knock-down, drag out game.
That meant the Sixers constantly had to score from their halfcourt offense.
They weren’t always smooth and forced their share of shots, but here’s a phrase that continues to characterize this team – they got the job done.
Iguodala again showed he is a prime time player with 15 fourth quarter points, including the Sixers final 10.
We’ve seen him do this continually, especially during this impressive 21-7 run.
Not known as a good free throw shooting team, the Sixers were 25 for 28 from the foul line, including 11 for 12 by Iguodala, who hit all nine foul shots in the fourth quarter.
This was an exciting game, arguably one of the best of the season, especially with what was at stake.
More important than the playoff berth was the fact that had the Hawks swept the Sixers this weekend, they would be one game behind with five to go.
Now the Hawks are four behind with six left. And the importance of keeping ahead of Atlanta is obvious. Nobody wants to play Boston.
So now the Sixers will try to improve their seeding, and keep the momentum heading into the postseason.
For the many people who still don’t believe how much ground this team made up, here’s something else to chew on – Playoff tickets go on sale Monday.
Could anybody have imagined this two short months ago?

Who cares what ANYONE would have thought 1, 2 months ago!!
Is the Philly media fully incapable of projecting ahead; rather than looking into the past? WTF is wrong with all of you?
You Philly journalists communicate as if its blasphemy to view the future optimistically. Its what makes Philly media the nationwide laughing stock.
If you only knew what Chuck and Andre shared privately re the psyche of the Philly media and fan, before he scooted out after Q1 w the boys.

Am sure you would be the runner-up, with all ducks aligned. We shall see who wins the horse-race; no stud wanna stay in Philly. Or even start there. lol.
Assuming those fans and media remain as the most self-delusional amongst sports-fans anywhere. They cannot toleerate failure, or, the prospect of Success.
Who would wanna play there, unless absent a choice of a non-dysfunctional City?
Iguodala, diplomatically, just reinforces how effed up Philly Media and Fans still are, while Chuck egged him on. What a pity of a City.

You think any NBA player wants to stay in Philly? lol. WTF for? Due to some memory 20 years ago? That is Philly mental disorder, disease.

the last time i checked, the media or the fans dont coach or general manage the 6ers. the star players has complained about the media, but is not ran out of town by the media. they usually leave because of 6er unwillingness to pay for more stars to join home grown stars. i'm pretty sure(100%) ai will stay if compensated properly. players not wanting to play in philly is a myth. any playoff team is an attractive destination for a free agent, except for toronto.

Are you a fool? Everyone hates Philadelphia.
Not the City, but its has the worst Sports-fans in the USA. If unaware, then then you obviously have never resided elsewhere.
o
If that's the case, get a job. One day you will live elsewhere and understand. Until then, you are stuck in Philly mud, having not a faint idea. Its just the way it is.
You are stuck, until you choose to move along.
Whats the saying? "You can never return, until you first leave, smell a fresher air, hear new ideas, learn how to, or not, judge new neighbors, and think amidst dissenters".
Then, you can return to Philly as a normal Fan, as those in every other City around the USA.

Regarding the original question that Marc posed, I thought there was a chance that once the Sixers committed to playing their younger players that they would have a chance to sneak into the playoffs by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin. I did not foresee them catching lightning in a bottle and having a shot at the 4 or 5 seed.
What a great story! From Mo and the coaches to vets like Andre Miller and Sam Dalembert to an emerging star in Andre Iguodala to the kids named Young, Williams, Smith, and Carney. The chemistry, unselfishness, and commitment of this team is remarkable.

Marc, you hit the nail on the head -- it was fitting that this was the win that put them in the playoffs, as they showed the same resilience that has put them over the top all year.
The single most important aspect to come out of this game (other than the result) was the Iguodala found his free-throw shooting touch. Hopefully it continues. His decision-making was also top notch (other than the one behind-the-back try). Many of his 10 assists set up easy baskets for Thad and Sam.
As for the others, Miller's jump shot was off at first, but he hit his share down the stretch. You knew he was making that fastbreak pull-up after Johnson fell down. Green had his second straight decent game (12 points, 11 shots); hopefully his slump is over just in time. Dalembert once again held his own (15-10-2) against a more celebrated opposing center (Horford, 10-7-2) -- and did you notice Sammy never came out in the 2nd half? Interesting that Mo went with essentially a 7-man rotation for most of this game, as Evans was very ineffective in his run in the 1st half (he did have 3 steals, but he passed the ball back on 2 of them).
The Hawks actually were very impressive to me, and I'll be glad if the Celtics have to deal with them in the 1st round. Childress is a tough cover for most shooting guards (he's shooting about 58% this year, and he always kills the Sixers). Joe Johnson was also impressive with a 32-6-8, and I have to wonder how he's only shooting 43%.
The Sixers will wake up tomorrow in 5th place, by virtue of the fact that they hold the tiebreaker over the Wizards. I was saying back in February (before anyone else was talking about the playoffs) that they would have a very good shot at upsetting the Cavs if they were to face them in the playoffs, and I still think that is the case. But really, the most important thing is that they are playing well going into the playoffs, no matter who they face. Let's hope it continues tomorrow.

I cant speak for anybody but myself and I've been confident they'd be in the playoffs the entire season. I've said the Sixers could beat most any of the teams in the eastern conference but would have a serious problem with Orlando and Toronto because their 3 point shooting stretches our defense too thin and makes everybody have to be outstanding 1 on 1 defenders. And if anybody doubts it they can just back track in the blogs or just ask the majority of the guys I've argued with all year. Damn it feels good to be right..lol Feels even better to know have something to look forward to that isnt the lottery..

Only caught the 4th qtr based on that and the boxscore.
Looks like the coaching staff is preparing for the playoffs and tweaking the rotation based upon the skills of the opposing team. Will be interesting going forward.
TYOUNG had to be a career high 41 minutes, as stated earlier 0 turnovers. Nice job by the staff to give the GTech boy max minutes in his college state.
This team is now completely buying into the coaching. Sammy's even on board. Finally, he's passing up the outside shot. Over the last 3 games 5for7, 5for8, 6for10 shooting. That definitely helps our 1/2 court offense efficiency.
Nice to continue to see Carney hitting 4th qtr 3's. Will be needed in the playoff's.
Don't need to say much about the Andre's. Just keep it up!
As suede said previously, if Atlanta had A. Miller they'd be in our position. If he wants, He's going to be a very good coach when he hangs it up.

Iggy and Dre are really taking the lead in the 1/2 court offense, Thad looks like Cornbread Maxwell with his flip shots and him and Iggy looked real good defensively when covering the Atlanta forwards. Like to see that result against Orlando tandem. Willie makes a big difference early when hitting his shots.

Big congratulations due to the Sixers. I could have imagined them backing into the 8th spot with a losing record due to the weakness of the East, but I never imagined over 40 wins.
I didn't know we have a tiebreaker over Wash. That's pretty cool, because as Statman says, the Cavs are our best match up to pull an upset.

Thad must have the softest touch, because it seems like the ball always goes in after a couple bounces around the rim. In the credit where it is due dept. it was nice to see Willie hit his shots. As I've said before, if he can shot 50% from the field he is serviceable for his 20 minutes.

I had the pleasure of watching this team in training camp and knew we had the makings of a special team. The team started out the same way as the season before. Slow in the first half and on fire the second half with the major difference being we are now in the playoffs. I know some of yall give me pain when I say thanks to BK but I don't give a rats behind. A mental image and memory of Andre Miller I will cherish for years to come, long after Andre has left the team and even the league.
97-91 with 3 minutes to go. Josh Childress misses a three. Andre Miller gets the ball and runs the length of the court. Instead of setting up the offense, he knows he can stick in the dagger. He pulls up and hits the 12 foot jumper. 99-91. Of course Mark Zumoff goes crazy.
On the replay you can see Mike Woodson and the other coaches rip their hair out before calliing timeout. Just classic - even for the regular season.
Of course Iguodala made the huge left handed layup to preserve the lead with a buck-and-a-half to go. Where'd he get the ball? From Andre Miller, who had stolen it from Joe Johnson, and gave up the rock to the right guy, as usual.

Whatnow, E.S. went out of his way to mention B.K. in his last interview this week. It was a group effort with Deleo and rest of staff and this last draft was a big part of it. I!ll say this much, with the A.I. situation, having to have a big pt. next to him to guard the opposing 2, it took some guts to make the L.Will. pick when drafting a "safer" pick may have been an easier option. Now E.S. can finish the job!!!

Lou was a 2nd rounder so not much of a risk at all, more like a low risk, high reward pick. Not to say that I am not giving BK credit for it. Lou was a great pick.
Personally, I think Thad was BK's balls-iest pick because knew his job was on the line, but he went for a player everyone, including himself, thought was a few years away from being a contributor.

Every time he throws in one of thoses hooks I do triple take. I must hit the 8 second rewind 2-3 times just to see how he did it. Zeru, its's so true man he just rises up off the spin without even looking at the rim. And Morty that magical touch of his lets any ball that hits the rim just smoothly fall in.
There is a 3rd factor in BREAKING DOWN THADS UNSTOPPABLE HOOK/RUNNER
And thats distance/range. This kid is 19 years old and somehow has a hook shot/runner that extends to 12 feet. Unstopable, future dream teamer Thad Young.

Jamesmoref, great mental image.
My favorite was this one: I don't quite remember what Hawk missed the shot or what the score at the time was, but how about Iguodala pulling down a tough rebound, going the length of the floor laying in a tough shot, and 1. I believe it was also at that point that a flustered Zaza chucked the ball and was T'ed up. Of all his great moments in the last two months, that was the play that really made me think to myself, "He's arrived." Guts of the game, tough shot to finish, absolutely no fear. What a gamer. I must admit in the past I have been his biggest critic, but it's tough to argue he hasn't been a top 10-15 talent in the league over the last two months.
That's why I made that comment earlier on the blog to that Orange County guy. To be honest with you, I had just got back from the bar after enjoying playoff berths by the Sixers and Flyers, a Phils win, and a couple Blue Moons. I wasn't going to let that tool ruin my buzz.

Iguodala sure knows how to make impact plays. He's great on the fastbreak obviously. He just needs to work on his midrange shooting standing still or off the dribble.

When Joe Smith was in Maryland He had that same game. He would post up Rasheed Wallace and Tim Duncan and just feel the ball into the basket. Had he ever tried a hard move Wallace and Duncan would have killed that type of shot because of their length and Joe wasnt strong enough to do traditional post moves. Made Joe look silky smooth and natural. Problem was when he got to the NBA everybody else was so much stronger than him that he couldnt keep his footing to get off that kind of shot. Forced him to develop and RELY on his perimeter game for most of his career because he never got bigger or that much stronger. Luckliy for Thad there are no more ghouls and gobblins patroling the paint like Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason..

GREEK., disagree on Arthur, soft and a finesse player, not even best p.f. on his team. Collison would be a good fit but after their tournament performances most sites have him ahead of Augustine and going 10 to 14 now. I think an upgrade at a wing position is coming in the draft between Douglas-Roberts, Rush, Ellington and Alexander. Although if Hibbard is there when we pick it would be nice to bring in a low post backup 5 for 15 to 20 minutes a night.

I didn't know how far they could go, but for me the turning point was that game against the Magic on Feb. 1. Van Gundy is a great coach, if we face Orlando, I'm more worried about Van Gundy than their actual team. Anyways, they played great against the Magic that night, and as Marc said, it was the Sixers' most entertaining loss of the year. I was gone for all of January, and I was totally surprised by what I saw on the court after not seeing them for a whole month, they were a whole different team. It seemed like a lot of the things that were causing them to lose had resolved themselves. You have to play a certain way to win, and they showed it against Orlando that night.
I think the media is running with the whole "You're lying if you say you saw this coming" angle because it's the best storyline. I'm with Frank Beans up top, there's no need to spin this, to call this season "magical" in any way. The Sixers are just good. Let's just say they're good. Let's expect them to do well because they're good. Being Philly people, we all love the whole underdog/Rocky thing. But this isn't that, this is "our players are better than your players."
Some crazy-ass stats: Lou Williams is 4th in the league in 4th quarter net +/-. Thaddeus Young is 6th. Andre Iguodala is 17th.
Something I didn't like from last night's game: Sammy played the whole 2nd half. He's too vital for us late in games, he needs a) rest, and b) to be kept from picking up fouls. I don't care if it's Booth or Smith, Sammy needs to get that rest between near the end of the 3rd quarter and about 3~4 minutes into the 4th. I'd like to see Sam get a lot of rest tonight. Could tonight's game possibly give the Sixers some playoff-like experience in that they're playing a team two nights in a row?
I like the Lamar Odom idea. Mitch Kupchak should be worried about us, we could do the following to them, or other teams:
Ed Stefansky: Mitch, we're gonna take Odom or Vujacic from you whether you like it or not. We really want Odom, I'd prefer you trade him to us for our exception. If you don't, we're gonna make Vujacic an offer he can't refuse. We know how much you value Sasha, are you willing to let someone you worked so hard to develop get away? If you don't match, we get Sasha, that's fine, we need the SG upgrade real bad. If you do match, that's gonna mess up your cap in a big way, and I remember your owner having said that he's not gonna pay the luxury tax. But if you trade us Odom, we won't offer a contract to Sasha, and you can get the price you want for him, and still have decent cap flexibility to sign your other up-and-comers. Let's not get this to a point where you match our offer to Sasha and trade Odom to us anyway for the cap relief. So choose - Odom or Vujacic?
Could the above happen?
Having said all that, I really don't wanna get anyone else (oh, wait, get rid of Willie), I'd be happy with getting help from the draft. I know Mo Cheeks would prefer veterans, but he's shown that him and his staff can develop young guys, and are willing to play them. So why not keep shoving rookies and young players down his throat, and let him keep doing his magic? Never forget that he clashed with Iverson and Webber - the best thing for the Sixers with Mo Cheeks as our coach might be giving him the young guys that he wants and then allowing him to mold his group into his own team. I can wait, if future seasons are gonna be as entertaining as this one.
TV viewing strategy for tonight: Watch the Final Four, then without looking at the final score, use Comcast OnDemand to see the Sixers-Hawks replay.

Congrats to the boys! I was one of the ones saying that we should have been losing and should have moved Miller to try and get in the lottery and make a play for a Derrick Rose. Miller has been a stud and the team appears to be on the upswing. I still think they will get bounced quickly in the 1st if they land 6, 7 or 8, but I think they could beat Cleveland if they get the 5 even though Lebron will probably get every call. It would be a good series, because they match up well and I would love to watch Iggy vs. James. O
A couple of notes from last night- the way Atlanta used Marvin Williams last night to post up Andre Miller to start the game - 3 straight possessions resulted in 6 points - I don't know why they went away from this. Also, Bibby was stone cold (1-11) - missing a lot of open jumpers (apparently he has a hand injury). I think that they should double off of Bibby tonight if/when they go to the post and make Bibby knock down some shots.
Good night for Philly - Sixers, Flyers and Phillies win - I'll take it.

Sixerzguy:
Right on about The Lakers' situation this summer. They have Vuaicic and Turiaf as free agents they want to keep, and Odom who they want to move in order to afford them. Mitch Kupchak may like to talk big on Sixers' blogs, but he doesn't have a lot of leverage this summer.
I would not use our #1 to acquire Odom, I would use Utah's #1 and get them to take Green to match up the numbers. That sounds like a good deal for us, and a decent deal for LA considering the circumstances.
I also agree with you that this is not a "magical" run. This is young players finding their legs in the league, and jelling as a team.

I like the Mitch and Ed conversation, but don't forget, Ed could have the same conversation with the Atlanta Hawks. Funny thing is, I would actually prefer to have Childress. I think he would be a lot cheaper, a more efficient scorer, and a potential 'true' shooting guard. Did you guys read Simmons' most recent article? He had a scenario where we would get Elton Brand and Tim Thomas (buyout of course) for our 1st round pick, Ollie resigned for 1 year deal, and our 10 million $ trade exception. I would hate to give up this year's pick, maybe two number 1s from 2009? Upgrades involving Brand and Childress would be sweet, if Ed could pull this off...
And 'Orange County Register', sources? would you like to share? Or are you just talking out of your ass?

Was out of the country for 2 weeks and really psyched to see the team in the playoffs. I think a priority would be to sign Iguodala while keeping him in the loop about plans so that he understands what the team is trying to build. We might get to keep him for 60mil or under if he realizes that this team has a solid plan to sign another top player. Once he gets a taste of winning the rest of the season and has a decent playoff, he will see the potential that the team has of going further in the playoffs next year.
We also need to keep Williams as he and Carney are major assets over the last month or so off the bench. Without their scoring spark we would have lost more games. I really like our bench and how they've not only kept us in games, but extend leads.
Raro, just my thoughts: pick up a healthy Brand this off-season, and I think this team is in the top tier. Pick up Childress, and I'm not sure we are that much better.

I disagree. I just have a sneaky feeling that Brand is damaged goods like Freddy Garcia was last year. (And hopefully not Brad Lidge this year).
I don't see a lot of Hawks games but I loved Childress last night. I think he would be a nice match. I'd love to watch him again tonight but I promised my girlfriend I'd take her out to dinner. Damn...

Good point on Joe Smith Zeru, he was a monster in college. There is only one guy active belongs the the oakley, mason family and that guy is our very own reggie evans. Can you just imagine Thads game when he puts on about 20 pounds!
Suede, I respect your opinion on Arthur but lets see what he does tonight in the biggest game of his career against the college player of the year. I havent seen him enough to determine his toughness, but his low post skills just jump out at you when he is lucky enough to be thrown the ball.
And remember the knock on our future dream teamer Thad. They said that he didn't defend in college, that he would be 2-3 years away from making any impact. And they also said that he spent too much time on the perimeter making his low post game almost non existant. And we know how all those assumptions turned out right. Like I said lets see what arthur does against psycho T, if he stinks it up I will be the first to bury him.
Also, I would love collison running guns with our second unit next year.

Also iI see that Childress and his 7o's style afro got us all thinking last night aht he might look good in Philly. If we can't get a rockstar such as Brand or Josh Smith then getting 2 players with the quality of a childress would be a great move.

Greek, he!s built like Mcdyess, perfect p.f. build. I hope your right but after seeing him about 8 times this year haven!t seen a strong post move just a turn around jumper. He doesn!t get many oppurtunities though.

Greek, Arthur has done nothing in big games up to this point. I doubt if we'll see anything out of him. Probably won't even know he is in the game.
Look closely at the monster in the middle on Memphis(dorsey). Interesting if he can finally play a good game when it really counts. Very inconsistant. Love & dorsey two horses.
Also, guards for UCLA vs guards on Memphis. Great matchup.

Suede,
How would you suggest Stefanski "finish it" this summer?
How about spending the no. 1 pick on Robin Lopez as Sammy's backup at center or a possible starter at PF or PF Jason Thompson from Rider? I'd rather have Lopez than Hibbert because he is more athletic.
Then, with the $11M in cap room ($13M if the cap increases by $2M if expected) that Stefanski said on WIP this week that he expects to have this summer, how about:
Inking R. Turiaf ($6M for 5 years, $30M contract), Kelena Azibuke ($3M for 3 years, a $9M contract) and Roger Mason ($2.5M for 3 years, $7.5M contract).
(Another possibility is trading for PF Chris Wilcox, but that would probably cost us the 2008 no. 1 pick)
So here are the 4 additions to the squad (5 if you include Herbert Hill): Robin Lopez, Ronny Turiaf, Kelena Azibuke and Roger Mason.
Suede, what about it?

Great game last night very exciting as is this talk of Lamar Odom.
Iggy has proved his worth, defense, offense, and now leadership he does it all. 5 years 65 million sounds about right.
Lou is great off the bench, his great leaping ability gives him the skills to take contact and gather himself in the air and finish. He also last night did a great job of putting his body into Josh Smith on the break and not allowing him to block his layup.
The team was very focused evidence by the free throw shooting and Sammy looked all business last night did not really see any mental lapses. Hope fully hes getting mentally ready for the playoffs.
This team is exciting but one thing I would like to see them do is be more physical. Last night and in the Boston games the sixers are getting fouled hard on layups and dunks and they don't do it back. Bibby last night laid out Willie (it wasn't dirty just a hard foul). Than Willie ticky tack fouled Joe Johnson acouple plays later and gave an and 1. In the playoff you can't allow those cheap and 1 plays. I think the Sixers do need to be more physical, not dirty just more physical.
Go Sixers!!!!

Thats one hell of a good point you have there man. Why bring in a busted veteran when Moe seems to be able to get the most out of young guys fairly quick. Might mess up our chemistry and Brand is the only guy really worth the money but i dont want him. He's had back problems when he was in chicago being a undersized PF. They have been leaning on him for a long time..At 29/30 years old and the kind of game he plays..The clippers can keep him. Lets just keep bringing in young talent and work Moe to death. I still want Odom tho. I dont think Mitch has much of a choice this offseason. He has to deal with us or he wont accomplish what he wants..

Watching Love - it appears as though he would be a great compliment to a center with some scoring ability - he is really tough to stop one on one. I don't know if he would be the best fit here - I think someone like Joe Alexander would be better. I also like DJ White, despite his size.

Just finished watching the Memphis game...man CDR was putting those dudes through hell...I think that CDR would be a good addition as a Rip Hamilton type shooting guard with some range on him. Seeing as we probably need a big man though, it still might be a bit of a reach if we take him in the first round (projected late 1st round on a couple of sites...)
