This week's rant about the uselessness of movie critics comes from Brian Robbins, the guy behind Norbit and Wild Hogs. I'm always happy when a movie connects with an audience. But I must confess that when I saw the poster for Hogs I finally understood the recurring plaint from male readers that when they see posters for The Devil Wears Prada or In Her Shoesthat they fear estrogen poisoning. Is there a hormone patch for male menopause?

I think the worst estrogen-movie poster may have been 13 going on 30. There was just nothing in there to which a guy can relate, which I suppose is truth in advertising.
Yay Carrie Rickey's new blog, by the way.

That's why I love Netflix. No matter how embarrassing the poster art is for a given movie, all the discs are in anonymous-looking white envelopes. It's beautiful.
But I do have to agree with you about this Hogs poster. I hate being seen with a girly-movie cover and I get embarrassed just looking at the Hogs picture. Maybe I'm just too thin-skinned.

Do we think studio marketing departments are narrowing their potential box office with these gender-specific campaigns? Based on the ads, my husband didn't want to see "Prada" or "In Her Shoes," (or "13 Going on 30" for that matter), but he enjoyed them all once we dragged him to the theater.
