One of the pleasures of moviegoing -- sometimes the only pleasure -- is the performance that induces swoons. So I wasn't surprised by the e-mails last week from Gerard Butler fans wanting to know if the great Scot of The Phantom of the Opera and 300 takes his shirt off in the family-friendly Nim's Island. What surprised me is that I didn't even notice. (BTW, Gerard's sculpted six-pack in 300 looked like latex to me.)
What I did notice was John Krasinski (pictured, with Leatherheads co-star and director, George Clooney), and I didn't know whether it was the woodwind voice or the bedside manner or the loping gait -- or a combination thereof -- that made me melt, but frankly, I didn't even notice that Clooney guy, was he in the movie?
Guys and gals, has this happened to you lately? Who makes you swoon? And if you're too demure to answer that, John Krasinksi or George Clooney?

Two words: Johnny Depp.

Don't dis my Clooney-man. I have the March 3, 2008 Clooney Time Magazine cover as my screensaver so that when I turn my computer on in the morning he's looking right back at me. Takes my breath away.

I really wanted to see "She's The One" because it had both Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston in it. After watching CD for an hour, I realized I hadn't seen Jennifer Aniston yet. So I started over and realized that for me, in Aniston's scenes with Diaz, all I'd seen was Diaz. Likewise, I have no idea what "The Gangs of New York" is about or why her character is even in it, but all I really remember is Cameron Diaz and that I'm glad she was there. I'd feel that way even if she had a role as short as Liam Neeson's in that movie. She is actually the only conceivable justification for that POS called "Vanilla Sky." For me, she's way past just hot.

Last time an actor so caught my eye was with Paul Rudd when he played Alicia Silverstone's former step-brother in Clueless. Crooked grins don't get better than that.
Christian Bale almost rose to that level for me in 310 to Yuma. What a wonderful actor he is.
Oh, and how can I forget Gael Garcia Bernal from his turn in Y Tu Mama Tambien? Need I say why?
There are a number of South and East Asian actors who hijack the entire screen for me, too, but I'm afraid their names would not be so familiar here. So many international stars have an old-style charm that seems to elude current Hollywood actors, with Clooney being the major exception.

Evelyn,
Sigh. Rudd, Bale, Bernal and Chow Yun-Fat are among my favorite favorites, who also include Keanu Reeves, Denzel Washington, Jackie Chan and, paradoxically, Owen Wilson. With the exception of Bale and Yun-Fat, I think it's because they make me laugh.

Does anyone know why Keanu Reeves can't change his facial expression on screen? Is it genetic? Bell's palsy? I was told a horse stepped on his face when he was little, but I think that story is apocryphal.

Carrie, yes, Chow Yun-Fat is on my list of screen-stealers. Not so much Jackie Chan. Perhaps Tony Leung instead.
How about Parvin Dabas, the future husband in Monsoon Wedding?
I could not take my eyes off Kôji Yakusho in the original Japanese version of Shall We Dance?
The image of a forlorn Lee Byung-hun has stayed with me since I saw Bungee Jumping of Their Own at the Philly Film Festival five-six years back.
For Hindi movies, it's Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Abhay Deol, Rajat Kapoor, a young Dharmendre in Seeta aur Geeta... There's something about the way Bollywood cinematography lionizes its heros that makes them way larger than life.

Not being gay, none of the above. However, generally speaking, while I can see the appeal of Clooney, Pitt, Depp, even Krasinski, I do not get the appeal of Keanu Reeves, as a heart throb or (even more so) as an actor. Is it the mimbo aspect (male bimbo)?
On the other side of the aisle, Charlize Theron will always do it for me. And -- I'm probably not a typical male -- intelligence and talent are part of the draw, so I've always been really attracted to Cate Blanchett and Emma Thompson.
And then there's Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz....they're almost too hot to even think about.

Evelyn: Clearly our pheromeones are in alignment. Eric: Clearly your pheromnes are in alignment with my husband's. And JDM, you naughty thing, you, harshing on Keanu. He has very defined bone structure, not Bell's Palsy. When he laughs, his face is mobile: for example "The Replacements" and "As Good as It Gets."

In the recent past, I've found Amy Adams very attractive in "Enchanted" and "Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day." (Not to mention in her appearance at the Oscars.) The first time I remember seeing her was in an episode of "The West Wing," where she played a small town Indiana girl trying talk to Josh and Toby about farm aid at a Bartlet campaign stop. She was only in one scene, but I spent the rest of the episode thinking, "Go back to that farm where that really pretty girl was."

There's much in what you say, Carrie. I know many fans agree that a labile affect is overrated outside the mental health field. OTOH, a "defined bons structure" may explain too much and too little. It certainly may account in part for the oddly intermittent, ill timed rictus-like smile he shares with Charlton Heston, but bone structure by itself doesn't seem an immediately sufficient cause for the entire remarkable range of signs and symptoms. But of course, this is an a fan forum, not the AMA call-in line. I don't want to make anyone more bitter than she already may be respecting either actor, so I think I'll just let this go for the wa of the group. Just don't get me started on Nick Nolte, The Man Where Timing Went To Die A Decent Death But Then Was Tortured Horribly.

I always liked something about John Krasinski, altho I was never sure what. But Matthew McConaughey makes me *swoon* and it's not difficult, considering he's shirtless in every movie!

I'm going to have to go with Jordana Brewster of "D.E.B.S." etc. I can never be sure how good or bad her films actually are because those dark eyebrows and apple cheeks are too distracting. Anyone else have this problem?

Sorry, no. Those "dark eyebrows and apple cheeks" remind me eerily of her grandfather and the Doonesbury comic strip. Also of the Whiffenpoof song.

JDM is referring to Jordana's gramp, Kingman Brewsterm former president of Yale. Another Yale prez, A. Bartlett Giamatti, sired actor Paul Giamatti.

He was also the seventh commissioner of baseball, although that has precious little bearing on the business of this board or Jordana Brewster's cheeks. They're not related.

Jim Sturgess beats out Johnny Depp. He was good in "21" but his singing in "Across the Universe" was better. "I've Just Seen a Face" is something to play over and over.

Sturgess sings really well, as does the lovely Evan Rachel Wood, also in that movie, which somehow gets by sans any Brewster cheeks or other Eli connections.

My sister and I both fell for David Wenham, who played Faramir in The Lord of the Rings movies. Be sure to watch the extended version of "Return of the King" when he and Eowyn fall in love - sigh.
Also a fan of Edward Norton in "The Illusionist", Jude Law in "The Holiday" and Christian Bale - sigh again.

Carrie,
Love your blog.....found the link from the Women and Hollywood blog.
So much great writing about Hollywood and the movies......so little time!
Wow.....this post struck me, as my gal friends and I are frequently discussing this very question.....all in fun, of course.(We're usually discussing the upcoming election, the possible boycott of the Olympics and the current state of the economy). :)
So many men (past and present) that make me melt, swoon, blush....whatever.
(My husband, of course....but we're talkin' Hollywood men here!)
Gene Kelly, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, Edward Norton, Ewan McGregor, Harrison Ford, Patrick Dempsey, yes...John Krasinski, Taye Diggs.....could go on and on.
That said.....definitely, definitely -- George Clooney. I've been a fan since he played Sela Ward's detective boyfriend/murdered husband on "Sisters." Then his 5 years on "ER" forever cemented my crush. ("One Fine Day" and his chemistry with Michelle Pfeiffer didn't hurt either!)
I'm still pining for him to make a cameo appearance (with the wonderful Juliana Marguiles, of course) on the 15th and final season of "ER" next year.
The "ER" producer John Wells put it out there that he would love to have some of the former cast members come back......wouldn't that be awesome? I know the long-time fans wanna know what happened with Dr. Ross, Nurse Hathaway......and their twin baby girls. Are they still together? (Please......yes.......that would be sweet).
If you feel like me about this.....check out a short video I created....a sort-of "Open Letter To George Clooney" ,about this very subject.
I've posted it to my YouTube channel: Fly4doh
And it's the first episode on the blog for my web show called:
"Kelly's Island"
www.kellysisland.blogspot.com
It's basically my miscellaneous musings on life, Hollywood, movies and the crazy celebrities that we know and love.
Or.......it's just me, tryin' to make people laugh.
If you're interested.....check it out.
And keep up the great writing about Hollywood, movies, etc.
Thanks for the good stuff......
Kelly
