It Takes A Village

Philly native son Bill Cosby was in town the other day. I explain in today's column how I've gone from Cosby critic to Cosby fan.

Because regardless of your opinion of him, his heart is undoutedly in the right place.

"jim crow laws" are alive and well in Washington Township High School, NJ. i have been told in the past that that schools athletic program needs affirmative action because of the underlying prejudice in that schools administration. so on friday i went to the game to see how things played out (pun intended). to my surprise WTHS played the same kids (only 2 kids playing were of color) the whole night even the ones limping and bleeding (all white and the one white kid was eventually was taken out in an ambulance). while there were 30 some odd kids standing dressed for the game on the sidelines. leading upto the game against Winlsow Tonship High Shool the WTHS coach told his team that they would beat Winlsow because "those teams are undisciplined" (i know this because I have family on the WTHS team) what was the WTHS coach refering to??? i also know that Winslow was watching one kid on the township team during practice that was a possible threat to them(who is black), but township never played him they kept the same injured kid playing the whole game (who is white). the cheer leading squad had only 2 black girls on it (was there only 2 black girls in the whole school who wanted to be cheer leaders?) the township band was all white except for 1 or 2 black kids that i saw. my observations are based on 1 game, but i am sure that there is more going on behind the seens in WTHS. so that nite i decided to attend more games and start documenting player numbers and actual playing times(and start posting my observations on as many blogs and editorial pages as i can to expose the prejudice in WTHS), along with photos including the band and cheer leading squad. There is a reason that Winslow has 3 "all Americans" on their team, how many does WTHS have? maybe they would have more if they would look beyond color for once...i sign this anonymous for no other reason that i have family on the WTHS team and he asked me not to say anything because his coach would sit him down and never let him ever play (that is what hurts me the most).

Bill Cosby spoke at my school, Lincoln University, in 2006, after our basketball team reached the DIII tournament. After he spoke, there were many people who changed their views about Cosby. Some who loved him, now hated him. And some who hated him now loved him. The speech centered around an ESPN clip of our team whcih is a team of an historically black college and another DIII team of a predominantly white school. Cosby believed that from the clip, it showed that white student-athletes in DIII, focused more on education rather than their sport while on the other hand, black student-athletes focus in DIII seem to focus more on sports, rather than education. Basically, Cosby wanted us to wake up and realize that we are at college to recieve an education and we shouldn't let this opportunity go by! This stirred up a lot of controversy because a lot of students felt as if Cosby was attacking us! But much of the faculty and some students realized that Cosby's message wasn't intended to badger Lincoln University, but instead was intended to give us a wake-up call. Whatever the case may be, I belive Cosby is for the black community. Although he may say some harsh words, such as "READ A DAMN BOOK!" I believe sometimes that is the only way to reach our youth! In summation, we should honor and embrace Cosby in the black community, not only as a person who gives back to the community, but as a person who was once apart of the struggle to get out of the hood and MADE IT! I believe Annette John-Hall said it best when she said,
"No amount of millions - and, trust me, America's Dad has got more cash than Jell-O has pudding pops - could ever erase Cosby's humble beginnings."
