Morning Briefing, Carol Ann Campbell Edition

Say what you want about Councilwoman Carol Ann Campbell, the fact is she's proven to be a remarkably effective legislator during her short tenure on council. The Inquirer's Jeff Shields has a must-read profile today of Campbell. The piece doesn't ignore the many controversies Campbell's been a part of, but he lingers on the fact that plenty of folks in City Hall have been pleasantly surprised by her work there. Here's council's respected chief accounting officer, Anne Kelly-King, for instance: "I didn't know what to expect when Carol came in, but I think she took the office by storm." And Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, one of Campbell's implacable political foes: "I don't agree with her politics most of the time, but I give her respect for what she's accomplished ... She's a strong, positive person, and she's getting a lot done."

Elsewhere, City Council takes a look at the problem of illegal dumping. There was another televised mayoral debate, but you're forgiven if you didn't watch the riveting rat-a-tat-tat action. You can catch another debate online in just a few minutes, it's hosted by the Next Mayor, and it starts at 10 a.m.

But what has she done for the other side of her district - East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough and Andorra? Nothing.

Yeah but will she stop development on Venice Island or keep the Youth Study Center from the EPPI property? I don't know one person in Manayunk-Rox who has any idea who she is.

And how much did she pay for this praise? Is this early PR to win back her elected seat? Carol Ann Campbell is rude to her constituents, doesn't care about most of her district, and has not been effective for us. She's only been effective for herself. Remember how she lost the last election? Plus she was only in office because she was appointed. Thankfully her term is quickly ending.

PDB:

Why would Jeff Shields feel the need to write this piece? Is there no other news out there? A fluff piece on Carol Ann? Why? The 4th will be glad to have her gone. Not that we've got much to look forward to from our next Councilperson. I believe the Daily News has done a few stories on him. General question - when is the press in this town going to stop being so lazy and do more homework for their stories? Didn't reporter Shields talk to any of the civic groups or citizens in the 4th? I doubt it; if he did, it wouldn't have been a fluff piece.
