When In Electoral Trouble, Go For the Liver

At-large City Councilman Jack Kelly, who is trying to fend off an energetic challenge from the aforementioned David Oh, is not amused by the $5 foie gras specials chefs across the city are offering up in protest of his proposed ban on the fat-engorged-but-delicious duck livers. Kelly tells Metropolis: "I could care less about those snobby French chefs. They can stick their $5 foie gras up their rears."

Campaigning against evil foodstuffs is quick becoming de rigeur for at-risk council members. Juan Ramos got the city to ban transfats, and Blondell Reynolds Brown got some pub when she called for nutrition labeling on menus. Of course, Ramos lost in the May primary, and Brown barely won re-election.

So maybe Kelly should find another issue or two.

It would seem that attacking the food we eat isn't a good political move. Sure, the guys gain some publicity. A no-news-is-bad-news kind of thing. But I agree with Patrick: perhaps Kelly should find something important to talk about. How about Philly's murder rate, for starters?

The Metrpolis artcile also mentioned that Kelly won't bring up his anti-foie bill until next year when his seat is not quite so up for grabs. Hmmmm. Perhaps the man knows his constituents are against him on this one. I call the man a coward and truly slimy politician.

Clearly, Kelly was either bullied into his stance, as many restaurants have been, or he jumped on board with a bunch of crazed zealots in order to gain publicity. As I said, slimy.

I suspect Kelly will be eating $5 foie gras with the of Philly, as well he should. Maybe he'll quietly sneak in and sneak out. But who could blame him? Foie gras is delicious (and so is freedom).

Kelly will soon be finding out how voters feel about a certain "snobby Philadelphia Councilman"

Joe Eastman:

I find it interesting that Jack Kelly, a politician known for accomplishing nothing during his term in public office, is championing the cause of duck liver. As admirable as some might think it to be, it is too little, too late. To my knowledge, foie gras has been eaten in this city for far too many years to count. Because he knows he's in big political trouble, Jack Kelly has suddenly taken up the cause of foie gras. Because he knows he is about to be voted out of office, Jack Kelly is also grasping at any political lifeline he can find. Again too little, too late. When one is on political life suport is no time to champion causes nor pander for votes. Jack Kelly had four years in office to establish a record on which to run. When you have no record of accomplishemnts on which to run, you grab at anything you can find, no matter how futile. Philadelphia is changing, and I would argue changing for the better. The time has come to elect serious candidates who will work hard for every man, woman and child in this city. The people of this city have demanded change. David Oh will provide that positive change. Jack Kelly has proven he cannot. Jack Kelly was given a chance to show what he can do for the people of Philadelphia. He has done nothing to earn re-election. It is time for him to go. Philadelphia deserves better.
