Sharif Street's New Gig

Sharif Street - former Council candidate, real estate attorney, and the son of former Mayor Street - was the beneficiary of one of his father's last-minute flurry of appointments. His post? A seat on the Zoning Code Commission, which is rewriting the city's zoning code. Street had five slots to fill on the commission, but he let them languish empty for months. Team Nutter clearly expected to fill the posts itself. No word yet on whether or not Sharif Street was the only new member named, but we'll find out shortly.

Sharif Street confirmed the appointment himself following this morning's inauguration of Mayor Nutter. What'd he think of the speech? He said it was solid, and he appreciated the respect Nutter paid to former Mayors Street and Rendell.

OMG. Sharif of the long dread locks? Rastaman? I'm sure that sends a businesslike message to the renovators and developers coming in. Wasn't Sharif involved in some kind of election related scuffle?

I think that this appointment violates the new anti-nepotism provisions that Nutter just signed off on today as one of his first acts of government.

Hopefully, no one will be too hurt when he enforces it.

Can Street get a dictionary and look up the word "nepotism?" That seems to be the problem.

Street doesn't care one bit how his own son will be perceived as a result of this poorly considered appointment. Can't his son work in private industry, or apply through normal channels?

It makes the whole Street family a punch line.

Does Sharif know anything at all about zoning?

Anonymous:

Doesnt matter if he knows anything about zoning, he got the damn job. And if any of you fools had relatives in office, I'd like to see if you would turn down a job offer!!!

Milton Street:

Hey bro, what about me? I needed a job too! I thought I was going to be head muckety-muck at the airport!

just when we thought we were done with the streets - they push themselves back in

The brothers and sisters are indeed in charge of the city...as are the sons, daughters, wives, sisters, cousins...another master stroke by the outgoing jester of this version of America's urban Afrocracy.

get over it!

Anonymous:

get over what..

the fact that we have to live with another street

the fact that there is nepotism

the fact about the lack of tranparency

the fact the seats were vacate for months and fills them on last day with family

the fact that street issued permits on his last day for Sugar House gaming

the fact that street took a retroactive pay increase that he gave up

thank goodness that mayor Nutter is in and hopefully can rescind the permits and appointment

I am surprised mary mason wasn't appointed also...or was she

It's sad and frustrating

but not at all surprising

Shame on the mess!!! Mayor Street continues to show himself small. As we try to move forward his actions hold us back to the same old, same old.

Add to this the sliding out the door appointments to the RDA and PHA boards, and we have a John Street lock down on the city's housing agencies !! After nearly thirty years of public support his actions are shameful.

PHA Board meetings are held the 3rd Thurday of each month in the Mayor's reception room 2nd floor City Hall @ 3pm - since John Street will be there. I encourage you all who can attend to go and tell the former Mayor what you think of his ending official dealings! The public (you & me) does get an opportunity to speak.

To the posters who wrote at 9:20 and 9:52

Talk about nepotism...

There are a gazillion McConnelly's, Donnelly's, O'Briens, O'Keefe's, etc.

...most of them are related

should I go on...

Filbert Farnsworth:

The Streets are going to ride that gravy train until there's no more gravy left. Nice work if you can give it to yourself.

even though the are a gazillion McConnelly's, Donnelly's, O'Briens, O'Keefe's etc...it does not make it right for street nor does it make it right for them, nor does it make it right for anyone...it's wrong, wrong, wrong

Johnnie Cochran:

Chewbacca doesn't make sense, so you must get over it.

Sharif is a real estate lawyer at a top Center City firm. He is far more qualified than most of the normal hacks that occupy City positions. That doesn't explain the timing of the appointment, but our government has far less qualified folks than Sharif.

GOOD RIDDANCE STREET. I, LIKE SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE, AM ELATED TO SEE YOU OUT OF CITY HALL. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER NUTTER WILL MAKE THAT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE, BUT I'M SURE HE CAN'T DO ANY WORSE THAN YOU DID IN OFFICE.

I guess when Street gets to Temple, he'll be teaching," Driving a City into the Ground 101".

Sharif is a Lawyer for the one of the most powerful law firms that handle real estate...

WOLFBLOCK!! His father did not get him that job!!

He is currently working on a 6 billion dollar deal that the INK covered... He has done all of the PHA housing deals in the last 3 to 4 years..

HE is more that up for the challenge!!

He is a REAL

Lets keep it real, Sharif is an intelligent young man with a great future in whatever he decides to focus on.....But this is bull and will hurt him in the near future if he ever wants to run again...he definitely has lost alot of future votes.

his daddy may not have gotten the job for him at wolfblock...but his daddy DID get him the job on the Zoning Code Commission (keeping it real)

Ummm, no comments on either Street, but this is an UNPAID position.

Anonymous:

It looks good on a resume, though, and Sharif also wants to run for office.

Poor appointment...YES! However, he is qualified unlike most of the Donnelly's & O'keefe's, etc.

If you could do a name search and some research on the employees in city government (I have), you'd be surprised...oh and don't get me started with the ones that have gotten married...we still know who you are...

Nepotism...please!

nepotism is wrong no matter who does it...please bring it to light and forward to the Auditor General (AG)...

---- another member of the Street family/'gang' getting in on the perks! They are a disgusting bunch.

After attending yesterdays zoning hearings...I observed and listen closley. Based on his yrs of commercial and residential development experience and real client concerns/needs....that Sharif Street Esq.,was well prepared, informed and "exceptionally knowledgeable" @ zoning issues and protocol. As a matter of fact; his insight and pointed questions was the cause of agnst to the water company presenters. I suspect that Philly residents would benefit bright, talented hardworking young people!
