Nutter Pleased with Guv's Budget

And why not? More money for the city's schools, more money for Philly cops. It's a Philly friendly budget. Nutter's release on the state budget is after the jump. Not that all elected Philadelphia officials are pleased. As one commenter pointed out (at length), State Rep. John Perzel thinks 100 new cops doesn't go near far enough. As reported by the Inquirer today, Perzel wants 10,000 more statewide, a plan that's been stymied by Harrisburg Dems for a long while.

Harrisburg, February 05 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter, in Harrisburg today for Governor Rendell’s presentation of his proposed budget, issued the following statement:

“The proposed budget that the Governor presented today in Harrisburg is good news for the City of Philadelphia, and good news for the region as a whole.

“For the city, the new money to be invested in Philadelphia’s schools is an investment in our future and begins to address the funding disparity identified by the state’s costing-out study that was published late last year. Furthermore the additional resources for the hiring of new police officers to be deployed in the most difficult areas of Philadelphia are an important step towards reclaiming our streets from the small minority of criminals who terrorize our law-abiding citizens.

“For the region, through the Governor’s ‘Rebuild Pennsylvania’ initiative we can begin to make much-needed investment in our infrastructure, creating the kind of twenty-first century network that is crucial to South-Eastern Pennsylvania’s economic development. Also, the investment in the alternative energy sector throughout the state is crucial if we are to achieve the energy independence that the Governor has made a priority.

“This budget represents an investment in the future of Philadelphia and an investment in the future of the entire region.”
