Quote of the Day: "Osama bin Laden wouldn't last five minutes at 56th and Master"

Mayor Nutter in the Daily News today, explaining why he wants presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to debate urban issues in their campaign.

"Health care is very important," Nutter said. "The war is very, very important. But if you live at 56th and Master, you're not as focused on what al Qaeda is doing. What you're focused on is what 'Al Gangster' is doing. Because Osama bin Laden wouldn't last five minutes at 56th and Master.

Clinton and Obama may wish to review how much federally earmarked dollars for housing, community development, etc. in Philly is simply wasted.

We have money coming in. What we don't have is any accounting of where those dollars go.

The fiasco of Universal not performing yet still expecting to get $7 million of valuable property near Center City for pennies on the dollar is a good example of how HOPE money, HUD money, and scant HUD oversight means that the federal Dems are funneling money into a system that is relatively well-funded, just not followed up on to see what is being done.

It shouldn't cost $300,000 to build a house that sells for $150,000. Housing redevelopment groups that give money to local campaigns shouldn't keep getting property when they have more vacant lots from projects they were funded to do previously.

And yes, sanctions must be meted out for groups that are not performing with HUD money -- that means that if the group has had its chance to build but hasn't after several years, then the property should be sold on the private market and the money used to pay HUD and the City back so that money can be used in the Housing Trust Fund.

It's fine to talk of generalities, but the spreadsheets of what the HUD funded builders in Philly show reveal that the federal government is funding the subsidy of blight, not its remediation.

Don't take my word for it, look at who owes property tax to the city because the property is still vacant or empty, yet held by a city or HUD funded entity:

The comparisons of troubled Philly spots to Iraq come often, but I struggle with the point. Has anyone done any real investigation of this, using crime numbers and the severity of the crimes? Is there any way to really gauge something like that?
