"Cold water in the face, brings you back to this awful place." The Clash always excelled at looking bad news in the eye, and making something magnificent out of it. Julian Temple's Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten opens at the Ritz at the Bourse today. It's pretty great. The review is here. This 1981 clip of "The Magnificent Seven," which asks the musical question: "Plato the Greek, or Rin Tin Tin: Who's more famous to the billion millions?," isn't in the movie. It's from the late Tom Snyder's The Tomorrow Show, though for some reason it's not included on this DVD.

The whisper of
a sibilant wind
imagines, feeling
the cold and when
a light fades
away, beautiful
moments of a fearless
and courageous
wonder, describing
a dream, and waiting
for a meaning; but
a weeping returns,
and that’s in your
mind, like a glimmer
of hope and a
delicate sadness
recalling the past
in the light of
a wisdom.

I'm relatively new to Richard Hawley -- read about him a few weeks ago and got "Coles Corner," which is a wonderful blend of Roy Orbison, Angelo Badelementi and the Blue Nile (the late-night, sad vibe). Live, he was GREAT -- same band as on the records, wonderful guitar and keyboard playing, programmed recreation of the strings from the records. And he's very witty in between songs, in contrast to the downbeat material. So glad I went! BG
